Top 10 RPGs to replay in 2023

role play or RPG is a genre of video games that offer players many options for customizing their character, including the following attributes:

  • Their skills and abilities
  • Weapons they can wield
  • Various outfits
  • Various paths and options

The outcome of the game often depends on the choices the player makes, as well as their individual statistics, which determine whether a character can complete certain tasks.

RGPs are quite popular due to their replayability, as players can replay the story with a different character or use different traits, which will cause a shift in the events that play out. Many RPGs even offer players the option New Game +, with which they can replay the game with maximum skills and abilities.

If anyone is looking to revisit any RPGs this July, or just consider replaying one they've already tried before, here are the top 10 RPGs worth your attention in 2023.

Note: This article reflects the views of the author.

10 RPGs Players Should Replay This July

1.The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Fifth main entry in the series Elder Scrolls, Skyrim is an adventure RPG that allows players to visit the frigid northern lands on the continent of Tamriel. Developed and published by Bethesda, this game hit the shelves in 2011 to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Players played as a character they created, Dragonborn Legend, who has the ability to use the voice of the dragons themselves. Embarking on a quest to rid the world of a dragon apocalypse, the Dragonborn must unleash their full potential to defeat the evil Alduin, the world-devourer.

Like most Elder Scrolls games before it, Skyrim relies heavily on its attributes to determine any of the Dragonborn's skills. This allows players to customize their character in multiple ways, each time playing as a different type of medieval hero, whether it be a sword-wielding warrior, a magical sorcerer, or a combination of both.

2.Undertale

Released in 2015, Undertale was developed and published by one person, Toby Box. It was a 2D RPG in which a nameless child fell into the Underground, from where they must find their way back to the world above. Players have several options to play this game, with two extremes known as pacifist run and genocide.

During their journey through the Dungeon, players will encounter many monsters, some of which may even attack them. However, players can spare the monsters after the battle. Not killing a single creature throughout the game, known as a pacifist run, scores players with what is collectively known as the best ending.

On the other end of the spectrum, players can attack any living creature they come into contact with, killing them all in a Genocide. This will lead to what is generally considered a bad ending, where players will have to fight several additional bosses, many of which have previously tried to help them.

3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Following the success of Skyrim, the next fantasy RPG to take the world by storm, although not necessarily to the same extent, was The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Released in 2015 by developer CD Projekt RED, this game allows players to enjoy a large open world from the Witcher books while playing as Geralt, the White Wolf.

The RPG does a great job of letting players take on the role of the witcher, with various side and side activities scattered throughout the world. Monster Contracts allow players to hunt down various creatures that terrorize the population, while some side quests have their own small storylines that echo themes from the novels.

In the main story, Geralt starts the game looking for his adopted daughter Ciri, who has been seen again in their world. Like Geralt, the player can make many decisions that affect the larger narrative in major ways, even the ending. A new Witcher game is apparently in development under CD Projekt RED.

4. Elysium Disco

Generally considered one of the best video games ever, Disco Elysium is an RPG that plays like no other. Developed and published by ZA/UM, this game was written and designed by Robert Kurwitz and released in 2019 for Windows and Mac OS. A new version of this game, with full voice acting and new content, has been released as a free update for PC and consoles.

At the start of the game, players create their character by answering questions about their psyche that determine the stats and skill bonuses their character will have. This RPG does not feature any active combat, instead allowing players to perform various actions by clearing various skill checks as well as dialogue options based on their skill points and attributes.

The protagonist is an amnesiac detective who sets out to solve a murder mystery with his partner Kim Kitsuragi. In an open world with a stylized isometric view, players can move their character around and interact with items and NPCs.

5. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

Returning to Commander Shepard's story is now easier than ever with Edition Mass Effect: The Legendary. It is a remaster of the first three games in the series, detailing the history of the Systems Alliance Navy Soldier and their efforts to stop the Reapers' invasion of the galaxy. This assembled remaster was developed by BioWare and released on May 14, 2021.

The RPG Collection is a third-person shooter that puts players in the shoes of Commander Shepard, the captain of the Normandy spaceship. One of the most iconic aspects of the game was the Paragon vs Renegade options, which offered two extreme options in some dialogue, as well as opportunistic actions that players could perform.

These dialogue decisions or actions are credited to Shepard's overall morality and affect various outcomes. Paragon is a law-abiding inspirational personality, while Renegade is a hot shot that goes against the rule book. Sufficient scores in any of these will cause Shepard to unlock certain dialogue options that can bypass certain difficult fights and tedious events.

6. The Outer Worlds

From the developers who made the original Fallout games came a studio Obsidian Entertainment. The latter, in turn, developed a video game that was described by them as Fallout, but in space.

The Outer Worlds is an RPG set in a distant star system known as Halcyon, made up of six planets and ruled by rival factions.

Players take on the role of a passenger from the colony's spaceship known as Hope, who has been in cryosleep for years. Awakened by a scientist known as Phineas Wells, the player is called into his service and sent to the planet Terra 2.

This RPG has many aspects from the Fallout series, including dialogue options, first-person gameplay, interesting and quirky characters, and the return of precision shooting mechanics. Players can recruit various NPCs to their team, as well as travel to different planets and space stations in search of quests and search for new weapons and items.

7. Person 5

Persona 5 is the sixth video game in this jRPG series known as Persona. Released in 2016, this RPG follows the life of a high school student known as the Joker as he transfers to a new school and befriends new classmates as they gain a new supernatural ability.

Developed by Altus, it later received a bewitched version known as 5 person Royal, which debuted on PS4 in 2020 and will release on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 later in 2022.

In this game, the Joker and his team, who call themselves the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, can use the Metaverse, the collective consciousness of minds, to infiltrate the psyches of adults and steal evil intent from them. The RPG elements are presented in the form of various part-time jobs and other activities that boost the Joker's attributes and provide buffs in combat.

Another aspect is the social simulation part of the game, in which the Joker must form bonds with his teammates through dialogue and conversation. Better connections lead to better team attacks, and this can even open up romantic subplots for stalking.

8.Horizon Forbidden West

The second game in the Horizon series and Aloy's journey, Horizon forbidden west, was developed by Guerilla Games and published by Sony in 2022. Continuing the story, this time Aloi must try to find a cure for a plague that kills organic life as it spreads across the land. This game is currently exclusive to PlayStation 4 and 5.

In this action-RPG, Aloy's journey takes her to the forbidden west to the ruins of California, Nevada and Utah, where she must find a way to restore GAIA, the AI responsible for monitoring the Earth's natural evolution. Her path crosses the warring Tenakt tribe, the Silens, as well as a group of futuristic people.

While most of the leveling and skill tree development systems return from the previous game, making some much needed quality of life improvements, Aloi now has access to a lot more offensive options, while her skills using her focus are also further away than previously.

9. Final Fantasy VII remake

Developed and published by Square Enix, Final Fantasy VII Remake is, well, a remake of the original fan-favorite video game from the late 90s. The RPG was released on April 10, 2020 for PS4, with an enhanced version with an additional side story released for PS5 and Windows in 2021. A sequel titled Final Fantasy Rebirth will be released in the coming years.

The game retells the story of Cloud Strife as he and his teammates battle the forces of the Shinra MegaCorp from destroying the planet. Cloud meets Barret, a member of the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE who was at war with Shinra.

Combat in the game has been completely revamped, with a different Active Time Battle from the original, where the player can pause combat in a normal third-person perspective and assign actions to each party member.

Players can also actively switch between party members at any time in the middle of a fight. Summons are returned based on what players have collected over the course of the game, which provide decisive assistance in certain battles.

10 Elden Ring

FromSoftware has released its first ever fully open source RPG game. Elden Ring February 25, 2022, receiving great recognition and success. The game is available on PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X/s as well as PC. Players create their own character using the extensive character creator and travel to the Lands Between.

Elden Ring is Soulsborne's most accessible RPG, as it allows players to experiment and change their play styles quite freely in the early game. Even in the latter installments, players will have access to an item that will allow them to re-equip their characters and allow them to try out different builds and weapons.

With a tutorial area (which is optional) as well as various summons to help players along the way, this game goes out of its way to prepare players for the boss battles they will eventually have to face. Using your skills and a little help from summoning spirits, even in single player, this game is not as difficult as other FromSoftware games.
