The walking Dead

Similarities – Virus Outbreak

A hippo who refuses to die; The Walking Dead franchise continues to release spin-offs, sequels, and film adaptations of Robert Kirkman's original comic.

Through this myriad of noise runs a show (at least early on) that perfectly captures the essence of survival against the undead. While later seasons veer a little off track, The Walking Dead is undeniably a worthy apocalyptic choice with four great seasons followed by a decline in quality until the final eleventh season.

black summer

Similarities - Action and Survival

Black Summer is an interesting look at the fall of humanity, sticking much closer to the days after the infection, rather than the grim post-apocalyptic wasteland all at once.

The story follows the stories of various survivors just trying to get out alive while the zombie threat remains a constant hurdle. Later seasons include more human factions and drama.

Black Summer maintains a constant danger throughout, and its large ensemble of characters are constantly thwarted by smart, fast zombies. There's an extremely tense vibe going on for most of the season, and while a lot of people are still torn by it, we were definitely fans of it.

Happiness

Similarities: human drama and viral infection

Happiness is a brilliantly written hidden gem of Korea. Our story takes place after COVID. Korea and the rest of the world are just starting to get on their feet.

When experimental vaccine pills called Next are dropped onto the market, they are soon revealed to be the catalyst for another outbreak - much more deadly than Crown.

With an unquenchable thirst for water and a frenzy that descends on the infected, the virus spreads through bites and scratches - and the ingestion of pills.

Happiness is an absolute must to watch and one of the hidden gems in recent years.

Sweet Tooth: a boy with antlers

Similarities – Viral Outbreak

Adapted from popular graphic novels back in 2009, Sweet Tooth takes place some time in the near future. A virus outbreak has destroyed the world. Called the H5G9 strain, what starts out as a simple cough soon mutates into something much, much worse. This is known colloquially as the "Great Crash".

Hiding in Yellowstone National Park with his Pubba, Gus finds himself growing up and learning how to survive. However, he soon becomes interested in the outside world and decides to go in search of his mother, Birdie.

He is joined by a bruise named Tommy Japp along the way and they form an unlikely bond that eventually serves as the glue that binds everything together.

Well written and undeniably charming, Sweet Tooth is well worth your time.

Epidemic (To The Lake)

Similarities - Survival

To The Lake feels like a mix between the second half of 28 Days Later and The Walking Dead Season 1. The human drama is intense, the characters are well developed, and the dystopian world is dark and unforgiving.

In a way, it's refreshing to find such a series with such a controlled dose of fear without going overboard. This plays out much closer to the character's comment about the selfishness and paranoia hidden in all of us.

12 monkeys

Similarities - history and complex time travel

When it comes to underrated science fiction, 12 Monkeys should be at the top of the list. This incredibly addictive show completely surpasses its brother on the big screen, creating something truly special - and criminally overlooked.

The plot is relatively unchanged from the movie. In the future, a virus has absolutely devastated humanity, and a lone time traveler jumps back to stop the plague from destroying Earth. While it sounds simple in theory, the 12 monkeys quickly add layers of depth to rival those seen in complex time travel series like Dark.

After an enjoyable and relatively predictable first season, 12 Monkeys is changing the game by introducing a dark group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys. They too seem desperate to change the past, but to what end?

Противостояние (The Exhibitors)

Similarities - the virus destroys the world

Stephen King's epic novel remains one of his finest works, a sprawling post-apocalyptic novel that transcends the brilliance of IT.

The story revolves around a deadly plague outbreak that kills most of the world's population. For those who remain, they are divided into two separate groups. One of them is led by a manic evil being known as Randall, while the others are led by a wise elder named Mother Teresa. This essentially creates a massive war between the two sides.

This 1994 miniseries still holds up to this day and is much better than the pale imitation of the 2020 remake. This is another must-see!

Kingdom zombie (Kingdom)

Similarities - Zombies and Suspense

Beautifully presented and dripping with Asian culture, the zombie action thriller Kingdom is a pretty thrilling ride. Divided into two seasons, Kingdom effortlessly blends political drama with a compelling storyline full of beautifully shot sets.

The story begins slowly, using its first episode to showcase the gorgeous setting of Hanyang in South Korea as we travel back in time to the Joseon period. Crown King Li Chang is our protagonist, and while he gets involved in a bitter feud with the queen, So-Bi's doctor in Jiyulheon makes a horrifying discovery.

With Li Chang at her side, the pair realize that the dead are coming back to life and relentlessly hunt the living. Without guns or modern weapons, much of the tension comes from how these men and women make do with the scarce resources around them.

left behind

Similarities - Mystery, Tone and Themes

If thematic depth is your jam, The Leftovers is definitely worth checking out. Continuing for three seasons, the story picks up immediately after a global event called "Sudden Departure".

This inexplicable event leads to the disappearance of 140 million people - or, to be precise, 2% of the world's population.

After that, the main religions decline, which opens the way for the emergence of a number of cults. Most notable among these is the Guilty Remnant.

The story originates from here and over time becomes more intriguing and interesting. Giving away so much more would be a disservice to the series, but if you haven't already, The Leftovers is a must-see.

Fifth dayь

Similarities: atmosphere and viral outbreak

Fifth dayb is another intriguing post-apocalyptic romp that adds a unique twist to the usual pandemic formula. Here, however, attention turns to an inexplicable epidemic that is sweeping the world and affecting every individual. Simply put, whenever someone falls asleep, they die.

While people frantically search for answers, the show focuses on a drug addict named Jake, who, joined by a small group of survivors, works to try and find a cure before it's too late.

While there are some loose ends and the show starts off a little slow, if you can look past that, there's certainly a lot to like.
