20 Best Project Zomboid Mods You Can Try For Free

Project Zomboid could easily go unnoticed by many. While the game may look questionable visually, don't let the outdated graphics fool you.

Behind the seemingly simplistic exterior lies one of the deepest zombie survival experiences you can get. It's easy to turn Project Zomboid into one of those rare indie gems alongside games like Undertale or Celeste.

Project Zomboid can be as unforgiving as any survival game. You may be looking for ways to make your gameplay easier or more difficult. Or maybe just swap things for fun.

Either way, I'm sure these mods will help you along the way.

20. Quick access bar for 5-20 frequently used items.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its filename is Hotbar-for-5-20-often-used-items.jpg

Considering how difficult it is to stay alive in Project Zomboid (even without the possibility of being eaten by zombies), let's start with quality of life mods to make things a bit easier.

Based on most other RPGs, the modder blindcoder gives us access to a hotbar that can hold anywhere from 5 to 20 items of your choice.

I'm not sure if the developers left this feature on purpose to make things more difficult. But this is a very handy feature.

The Quick Access Toolbar is highly customizable, allowing you to easily access selected items using the number keys, and it can be shown and hidden with a quick press of a button.

19. Lots of backpacks.

As you'd expect, in any zombie game (or any survival game, for that matter) you'll want to limit your exposure to external threats.

I'm sure you know how important storage capacity in these games, since you are likely to accumulate all the resources that you can carry with you every time you start mining.

With that said, you will need the Many Backpacks mod.

What's great about this is that it doesn't just improve your backpack.

Instead, it keeps things interesting by giving you the ability to create updates to make improvements as you go along. New FTW game mechanics.

18. Simple logistics

Speaking of resource accumulation, Simple Logistics is another great tool that makes it much easier to transport large quantities of certain items.

The mod also takes a more realistic approach to completing a challenge, instead of just letting you wear more at once.

It actually adds new craftable items, allowing more logs, planks, and metal sheets to be moved around.

You will now have access to recipes for pallets and stacks of lumber, allowing you to stack certain items for easier transport. All recipes come both boxed and unboxed so you can easily take apart the pallets after moving.

17. Immersive overlays

While some prefer to browse menus and keep track of the numbers, there are those who prefer to actually see what's going on instead.

Immersive overlays are perfect for this, giving you a visual representation of important statistics to keep track of.

It uses color overlays that change the overall temperature or feel of the environment based on your character's conditions.

The mod covers everything you need to control including pain, health and fatigue.

16. Desperate craft

This image has an empty alt attribute; its filename is Desperate-Crafting.jpg

I personally love the way the community is modding Project Zomboid.

As you can understand from all the recordings made so far, realism never brought в sacrifice to improve the game while maintaining what makes the game so good from the start.

Desperate Craft is no different.

It adds some realistic actions that make the job easier.

According to the modder, these "common sense recipes" aim to address these scenarios when you're playing and just really want to do something that the game doesn't allow.

Additional activities include being able to open jars with a knife, stitch sheets, and cut fabric to make towels.

15. BookCollection v10.4

Much of your character's progress in Project Zomboid will depend on how much they can learn along the way.

This is cleverly done in the game, allowing you to pick up books scattered around the world and you can spend time reading to learn new skills or improve certain tasks.

While skill books are categorized into Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, and Master, the naming convention isn't exactly ideal for simple sorting.

This mod does just that: it renames all skill books to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Instead of sorting books by skill level, they will now be sorted by skill type. Convenient, right?

14. Body armor

While keeping yourself healthy is no easy task, let's not forget the zombies.

Sneaking around them to collect prey is inevitable. So it's better to be prepared for the fact that you have to leave the safe zone.

Armored vests can help with this by giving you more protection from the undead - provided you have the right gear.

This mod enhances body armor, balaclavas, hazmat suits, and other protective gear to make them more effective against zombie attacks.

13. Post-apocalyptic sprites.

Taking a break from some of the more useful mods for Project Zomboid, here's a purely cosmetic mod that helps make the environment a little more natural.

When it comes to zombies, anything post-apocalyptic is usually good.

I mean, who expects the environment to stay tidy when hordes of the undead run through the city?

Post Apocalyptic Sprites actually perfectly fits for the world of Project Zomboid, adding textures for blood-soaked refrigerators, broken washing machines, and spray-painted TVs.

12. Superb Survivors!

If you've ever seen The Walking Dead or Zombieland, you probably already know that there are actually numbers of strength.

This is especially noticeable in Zombieland, as the characters randomly meet other survivors who end up helping them on their journey.

Unfortunately, this isn't something you can take advantage of if you're playing Project Zomboid alone - until now.

Super Survivors! adds surviving NPCs around the map. But be careful - while some can help you fight off hordes of zombies, others may be more hostile towards you.

11. Exercise V2 - Burn calories and build muscle.

Constantly running and fighting off zombies can be very hard.

All the more important stay in shape .

Luckily, modder ZonaryQuasar values fitness despite the zombie apocalypse with his Exercise mod for Project Zomboid.

The mod allows you to perform two types of exercises: push-ups and jumps.

Each has its own effects: push-ups increase your strength, but also increase your weight. On the other hand, jumping will improve your fitness and help you burn calories.

10. Cremation - disposal of corpses

Now that you've been training and have better gear, incapacitated zombies should start to pile up, right?

Well, if that's the case, you'll need a way to get rid of all those corpses you've scattered around.

Cremation - corpse disposal is a great way to do this, allowing you to burn zombie corpses in a bonfire as a quick and easy way to get rid of them.

Not only that, but burning corpses also benefits you because it increases the time it takes for the fire to ignite.

9.Advanced Trading Post

If you prefer to play an online multiplayer game, you definitely want to check out nolanritchie's Advanced Trading Post mod.

The mod adds a cool mechanic to online play by allowing you to trade items with other players - providing a quick and easy way to give up some one-time loot in exchange for the items you really need.

It's pretty simple: only item trading is allowed, which means there won't be any money in them.

Posts also work with a simple supply and demand mechanic where the price drops as items become more available.

8. Katana

Did you really think that we would go through a whole list of mods for a zombie game without any cool weapon mods? Damn it.

The next one is just the beginning and I'm sure you won't miss the opportunity.

Zombie katanas are by no means a fresh idea as they have been used many times in different games, shows and movies.

However, that doesn't make it any less cool. And I personally jumped at the chance to acquire it from Project Zomboid.

You'll need sheet metal, scrap metal, a blowtorch, and a hammer to craft it, and you'll be ready to hack and slaughter some zombies for their second death.

7. Silencer mod.

Not only does this next weapon mod add a nifty feature to the game, but it's also undeniably useful.

We all know that zombies are attracted to sounds. And in a game like Project Zomboid, you never need unnecessary attention.

If you're going to use weapons, they can have silencers on them to maximize stealth - and this mod allows you to do just that.

It adds a silencer that can be used as a weapon attachment for both pistols and rifles, so taking out zombies won't necessarily mean having hordes of their friends running after you every time.

6. ORGM

If you're looking for a more extensive weapon expansion, ORGM is definitely the way to go.

Simply put, the modder himself said:

"This mod adds a lot of weapons, ammo, modifications and mechanics."

With the mod installed, you will have access to everything from shotguns, rifles, spears, pipe bombs, and even electric bass guitars instead of weapons.

There are also a couple of extras. Stuff including scopes, mufflers and shock absorbers.

You will never have enough stuff to kill those zombies.

5. Hunting mod

Zombies aren't the only ones you want to kill.

Especially with the Ungratefuldead88's Hunting mod installed.

Well, the mod makes hunting a possible way to get the next food, as you will be able to hunt 16 different animals for food .

There is also some tracking. Particularly because you'll first need to find animal tracks in order to start hunting - adding another level of depth to Project Zomboid's survival aspect.

4. Hydrocraft

If you're looking to expand on Project Zomboid for more than just weapon crafting, you can't go wrong with Hydrocraft.

Probably the most popular mod for this game, Hydrocraft adds many new crafting recipes to the game.

There's so much here that they actually had to create their own wiki page to index everything they could create - and that's over 40 pages!

You will be able to choose from a wide selection of items for hunting, food, farming and even alchemy depending on what you need.

3. Dub's Profession Mod

Another great expansion option is Dub's Profession Mod by Dubpub.

The base game already offers over 20 professions, so there are many different builds to try.

By installing this mod, you will receive another set of 21 tasks to choose from. Fine!

2. Silent Hill

If you're a fan of the darker, more traditionally scary types of zombies... well, you might want to check out this map by modder borisworm.

The map recreates the spooky city of Silent Hill from the popular PlayStation classic.

As the modder explains in their description, the recreation is not 100% accurate because they chose to include some bonus features that really heighten the spooky factor. Just the way I like it.

1. Project "The Walking Dead" - set

The last option is an easy task for zombie fans.

I mean, you probably liked The Walking Dead series.

While not exactly a recreation of the Atlanta series, the mod adds most of the locations which you will find in the scenes of the show.

The modder used real footage from the series to create these locations, and you can see by actually comparing them how accurate they are.

Some of the settings included here are Harrison Memorial Hospital, Herschel Farm, Oceanside, and more.

Those were all mods for today! Good luck with your game and have a good time in Project Zomboid.
