Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Hybrid Flowers. How to Cross Plants

guide

Here's everything you need to know about growing black, blue, purple, pink, and orange flowers in Animal Crossing.

When you start a new island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons , you will find an assortment of flowers of the same type on your cliffs. During the game, you will be able to buy more flower seeds and plant different types of flowers to decorate the paradise island. All of these flowers will be red, yellow, or white, but there are also many other options you can get if you learn how to cross them.

These "hybrid" flowers include black, blue, purple, pink and orange plant variations that you can plant normally. Hybrid flowers aren't just pretty - they can sometimes attract rare bugs you might not get otherwise, and they can also be used as crafting ingredients, so it's a good idea to have at least a few on your island.

Kinds of flowers

When you start the game, one type of flower will grow on your rocks; keep in mind that you will need ladder to scale rocks. You can buy other varieties of flowers (in seed form) from Tommy at Resident Services or at Nook's Cranny when it opens. Flower varieties include:

  • ➤Lily
  • ➤Tulip
  • ➤Rose
  • ➤Violet
  • ➤Cosmea
  • ➤Chrysanthemum
  • ➤Hyacinth
  • ➤Anemone

While Nook's Cranny's prices change every day, there will be some types of flowers that they will never sell, so you'll have to buy them from friends' stores. For example, your store may sell lilies, tulips, violets, chrysanthemums, and hyacinths, but not roses, cosmos, or anemones, so you need to find a friend whose store sells one of these varieties to plant on your island.

Each of these flowers comes in red, white, and yellow, except for chrysanthemums, which are originally red, white, and orange. All other colors are not sold at Nook's Cranny and are considered rare.

How to grow hybrid flowers

The main way to grow hybrid flowers is to cross two others. Flowers can interbreed if they are the same kind of flower, they are planted next to each other (straight or diagonally), and they are watered with any watering can or rain. If these conditions are met, a new flower may sprout in nearby empty spaces the next day.

To maximize your chances of getting a new flower, try planting your flowers in a grid pattern with the flowers touching each other diagonally. This will leave enough space between the flowers for new ones to appear. If you're having trouble planting them this way, try digging holes where you want them to grow and then plant flowers; your character will prioritize them by planting them in adjacent holes before planting them on level ground. This should help you better control the spacing between your flowers so you don't have to dig them up and transplant them in a bunch.

Hybrid flowers generally follow the standard color mixing rules, but there are some odd exceptions, including colors that you can only get through the floriculture chain. Note that you won't always get a rare color from a cross, so read on for what color combinations you can get hybrid flowers for. We will continue to update this list as we confirm more colors and combinations.

Other ways to get hybrid flowers

While you mostly have to grow hybrid flowers yourself, if you're lucky you can find rare flowers while on Desert Island Mystery Tour . To take home with you, you will need a shovel; dig up the flowers and you can transplant them to your island. This also applies to flowers on islands your best friends if you ask!

Unlike previous Animal Crossing games, you can collect flowers without losing the entire plant. Whether you need hybrid flowers for a DIY recipe or just decorations, simply select them using Y and they will grow within days.
