Blizzard Confirms StarCraft II Will No Longer Get Updates
Just weeks before StarCraft II's 10th Anniversary celebration, Blizzard announced a significant development cut, meaning no new content will be added to the iconic game.
StarCraft II launched in July 2010. It has since maintained the legacy of its predecessor as one of the most iconic real-time strategy (RTS) titles. It has become a star in esports and has become a staple in competitive gaming. However, the current form of the game seems to be the last.
As Blizzard reported in statement dated October 15, support for the game has decreased again. No new content will be in development as the developers look to the future of the "StarCraft universe as a whole".
The original StarCraft has been updated over a decade since its release. Its sequel is now closing shortly after celebrating its 10th anniversary.
“We do not intend to produce additional content for purchase,” Blizzard emphasized. From commanders to chests, no new microtransactions will be added. However, this does not mean that the game will no longer receive any updates.
"We're going to continue to support Starcraft II just like we did with our previous legacy games." This means that Blizzard will focus on the competitive side of things with balance updates and fixes of this sort, rather than any new content.
"We will continue to make seasonal resets and necessary balance fixes going forward." However, don't expect to see another one this calendar year. "We do not plan to update the balance sheet in the fourth quarter, but as always, we plan to continue to do so as needed going forward."
Referring to the game's competitive ecosystem, Blizzard also talked about how StarCraft II will evolve as an esport. In that regard, the title will "keep evolving" thanks to Blizzard's partners at ESL Gaming and GSL.
"We are eternally grateful for your continued support," Blizzard added. "We will keep you updated on all our plans for future flights to the Koprulu sector."
Blizzard has a history of long gaps between sequels. Therefore, it may well be years before we see anything new in the world of StarCraft.
