What Marvel has in store for 2023: MCU Phase 5, X-Men '97, and more

This is going to be a big year for the Marvel Universe and the X-Men.

Whether you prefer to have your superhero adventures played out on the big screen, streamed on your phone, or you prefer good, old fashioned comics, there will be plenty of Marvel content coming your way in 2023. The MCU is starting Phase 5, Sony has new live-action and animated Spider-Man films in the works, and Marvel is celebrating the 60th anniversary of one of the biggest franchises in the world.

Here's a breakdown of everything you can expect from Marvel in 2023, from movies to TV series to comics to video games.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5

2023 will be a pivotal year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it marks the start of Phase 5 and the moment the MCU transitions from introducing new heroes to laying the groundwork for Avengers: Kang Dynasty и The AvengersSecret the war.

Humanant и Wasp: Quantum Mania (February 17, 2023)

It all starts with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantania in February. This latest sequel not only features teenager Cassie Lang (now played by Kathryn Newton) in costume alongside her father as Rost, it's also the first MCU movie to feature Jonathan Majors Kang the Conqueror as the villain. This will by no means be the last time we see him.

Quantumania also brings back Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne. Also, Bill Murray is joining the MCU and we're even going to meet MODOK.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023)

The next MCU movie on the list is the final entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, hitting theaters on May 5th. Expect many tearful goodbyes as director James Gunn says goodbye to the franchise and the MCU as a whole.

Guardians Vol. 3 follows Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his dysfunctional family unit as they search for the missing Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and encounter the brilliant mad scientist known as the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwudi). This sequel will also introduce Will Poulter's Adam Warlock, although how he affects the MCU after Infinity War is anyone's guess.

The Marvels (July 28, 2023)

The Marvels is wrapping up a trio of new MCU films in 2023. Released in theaters on July 28, the Captain Marvel sequel pairs Brie Larson's character with Teyonah Parris' and Ms. Marvel's newly superpowered Monica Rambeau. We don't know much about the plot of Marvel yet, but we're already on board for all the inevitable scenes of Kamala trying to meet her superhero idol.

MCU series on Disney+

Expect many more MCU series to hit Disney+ throughout 2023. And what if...? and Loki get a second season, with the latter exploring the aftermath of Season 1's shocking finale and the death of He Who Remains.

Secret Invasion will arrive in early 2023. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury finally takes center stage in this dark thriller as Fury works to get to the bottom of the alien conspiracy. Along with the return of favorites like Cobie Smulders Maria Hill, Ben Mendelsohn's Talos and Don Cheadle's James Rhodes, fans will also meet rebellious Skrull Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and Fury's old partner Sonia Falstaff (Olivia Colman).

Echo Alaqua Cox is launching its own series in 2023. Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock are expected to appear, making this series the perfect starter for the upcoming "Daredevils: Reborn".

«Iron heartDominika Thorna will also get a spin-off of the show in 2023. Set after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart brings Riri Williams back to her hometown of Chicago and pits her against a superhuman rogue known as The Hood (Anthony Ramos).

And finally, we expect that Agathacoven chaos will complete the 2023 MCU lineup. In this series, Katherine Hahn plays Agatha Harkness and is probably the closest we'll ever see to WandaVision season 2. But will Wanda herself show up? We know the series also stars Aubrey Plaza and Joe Locke, with the latter rumored to play an older version of Wanda's magically addicted son, Wiccan.

Sony's Spider-Man universe is growing

Sony is still in the Marvel movie business, even if Morbius didn't make the strongest case for the so-called "Sony Spider-Man Universe" in 2022. But the good news is that the future looks much brighter next year.

Humanspider: Across universes 2 (June 2, 2023)

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse will finally hit theaters on June 2nd. This sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 film Into the Spider-Verse promises to up the ante with a few more Spider-heroes. This includes Issa Rae as Spider-Woman and Daniel Kaluuy as Spider-Punk.

This time around, Miles and his multiversal friends are taking on The Blur (Jason Schwartzman), though our Spider-Sense tells us he's not the only villain threatening these worlds. Don't forget that Across the Spider-Verse leads directly to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2024.

Cravenhunter (October 6, 2023)

As for Sony's live action lineup, Cravenhunter is the next iconic villain to get his own live-action movie. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, Ariana DeBos plays Calypso, and Fred Hechinger plays Sergei's half-brother Chameleon. As usual, we don't expect the Spider itself to appear, but we do expect some connection to the Venom and Morbius movies.

Big X-Men Anniversary

2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the original X-Men #1, and you can expect Marvel to throw a lot of love at our favorite mutants throughout the year.

X-Men '97 (Fall 2023)

That includes a big dose of '90s nostalgia with the debut of X-Men '97 on Disney+. This animated series picks up where the original X-Men cartoon left off over 25 years ago. Magneto is in charge of the X-Men, and a whole host of enemies, both new and old, are bent on destroying Charles Xavier's dream. Many of the surviving voice actors are returning for a new series that appears to be aimed at a more mature audience this time around. We'll find out if he can really bring back that '90s mojo when the series debuts in the fall of 2023.

Dark Web & Sins of Sinister (Early 2023)

In terms of comics, Marvel continues to bet big on the X-Men line in 2023, with ongoing series like X-Men, Immortal X-Men, and Red X-Men exploring the ongoing fallout from the massive changes brought about back in 2019's House of X and X-Force. . We can expect two major X-Men crossovers early in the year. The Dark Web pits Spider-Man and the X-Men against the duo of Madeleine Pryor and Ben Reilly, two of the most evil clones in the Marvel Universe. The Sins of Sinister then jumps into the future of Marvel U. to investigate what will happen when this scheming scientist finally betrays the nation of Krakoa.

Autumn X (summer 2023)

But the biggest X-Men comic of 2023 is undoubtedly Fall of X. We don't know much about Fall of X other than that it's coming out in the second half of the year. But after watching Krakoan's dream slowly crumble on its own due to internal strife and betrayal, it seems like everything is about to fall apart for the X-Men. Will there be more Krakoa when the dust settles?

Spider-Man's Dark Mystery Revealed And Other Major Comics

That doesn't mean that Marvel Comics is completely focused on the X-Men in 2023. This will be a transformative year for a number of long-running franchises, including Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man (Spring 2023)

Once the dust of the Dark Web has settled, Amazing Spider-Man readers will finally have some answers regarding one of the biggest mysteries of 2022. What exactly did Peter Parker do to alienate all his friends and loved ones? Why did Mary Jane end the relationship again? Writer Zeb Wells will reveal everything in the new year.

Symbiote Summer (Summer 2023)

There's also another Spider-Man crossover coming up for summer 2023, this time reuniting Spider-Man with his old nemesis Venom. Other than the name - Summer of Symbiotes - we don't know much about this storyline yet, but it sounds like just a ticket for those who can't get enough symbiotes.

Avengers Endgame by Jason Aaron (Spring 2023)

Elsewhere, Jason Aaron will wrap up his five-year run on the flagship Avengers series this spring, with Avengers from across the multiverse uniting to take on Mephisto. This epic saga ends in April, and it's safe to say that Marvel will be announcing a new monthly Avengers comic from a brand new creative team. We do not envy anyone who should follow in the footsteps of Aaron.

Captain America: Cold War (Early 2023)

Marvel is also gearing up for Cold War, a crossover between the two Captain America books that deals with the growing threat of an organization known as the Outer Circle. Expect a lot of big things in the coming months, including more revelations about the origin of Cap's shield and the return of the Nomad.

Scarlet Witch (January 2023)

And finally, it would be remiss if we didn't mention Scarlet Witch, a new monthly series that introduces a new killer costume and a very different status quo for Wanda Maximoff. Not only is she opening her own witchcraft shop, Wanda is about to join forces with the one and only Darcy Lewis, who is finally making the jump from the MCU to the Marvel comics universe.

Best Comic Series or Original Graphic Novel of 20222022 has proven to be one of the best years for comic book fans in a long time. Major superhero franchises like the X-Men, Batman, and Superman are firing on all cylinders. The horror genre continues to thrive with books like The Good House on the Lake and The Night Eaters. And thanks to the growth of Substack and other digital comics publishers, there's more room than ever for adventurous and innovative stories. br> These are our nominees for Best Comic Book Series or Original Graphic Novel of 2022...

Marvel's 2023 games

2023 won't be Marvel's biggest year in the video game arena, but there's one big gun to keep an eye on next year.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (Fall 2023)

Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the sequel to the 2018 hit game Insomniac, is currently slated for a fall release. But as we've seen over and over again in this age of COVID, no release date is set in stone.

Spider-Man 2 allows players to take control of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The game introduces poison into the Insomniac universe, voiced by the Candyman himself, Tony Todd. And based on how the first game ended, we're guessing it's actually Harry Osborn under those big muscles and massive jaws.

Other Marvel games

While there's zero chance of Insomniac releasing their Wolverine game next year, we hope to get a better look at their latest Marvel project.

The same goes for other Marvel mystery games, EA's Iron Man and Skydance's Captain America and Black Panther. Hopefully we can finish the year knowing a lot more about what to expect from these big Marvel games.

Which Marvel project are you most excited about in 2023? Voice your thoughts in the comments.
