What to see? Most Anticipated Movies 2020

dune-img

On our site you can find a sufficient number of selections related to both the games of the outgoing 2019 and the upcoming 2020. This time we decided to do something different, so we present to your attention a list of films that we are most looking forward to in 2020.

But before that, a little note. This material contains films that have already premiered in some countries. But since they will be released in Russian rentals only in 2020, they got into this list just for this reason.

We are done with the water part, so let's go directly to the films.

The Richard Jewell Case – January 9

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Clint Eastwood is a great director and actor. This is a man who starred in such films as "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly" (Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo), "Gran Torino" (Gran Torino) and "Million Dollar Baby" (Million Dollar Baby). In the last two, he also acted as a director. And despite his advanced age, Clint Eastwood continues to make films.

In the US, the premiere of his follow-up film, The Case of Richard Jewell, has already taken place, but the film will reach Russia only on January 9th. The tape tells about Richard Jewell, a security guard who worked at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, who saved thousands of people from a terrorist attack. But a few days later he was made the main suspect, and he himself was subjected to mass persecution.

"The Case of Richard Jewell" has already collected a lot of positive reviews. Viewers note a beautifully told story, as well as amazing acting work, especially Paul Walter Hauser (Paul Walter Hauser). He actually played Richard Jewell.

1917 - January 30

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Another film, the premiere of which in some countries of the world has already passed. 1917 is a film set on the battlefields of the First World War. In the story, two fighters are given a dangerous mission: to cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will prevent the death of hundreds of other soldiers.

The film attracts attention for several reasons. Firstly, the director and one of the screenwriters is Sam Mendes, who directed American Beauty and 007: Skyfall. Second, the cast. Here you have Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Andrew Scott and many others.

And, thirdly, 1917 is a picture taken as if in one frame (there will be cuts, but you will hardly notice them). For the implementation of this, by the way, not least we should thank the 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins, who had a hand in The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo and Blade Runner 2049.

The Gentlemen - February 13

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Now let's move on to films that have not yet premiered. The Gentlemen is a new project by Guy Ritchie, best known for such films as "Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels", "Snatch" and "Agents of U.N.K.L.".

After his last film, "Aladdin", which was anything but a British director's film (since his trademark was not there from the word at all), from "Gentlemen" you expect to see a bright, dynamic and black funny picture, with colorful characters, non-linear plot and various branded editing techniques.

Critics, by the way, have already appreciated the film. By tradition, they did not particularly like the new Guy Ritchie film, which already seems to hint that the picture, with a high probability, came out at least good.

King's man: The Beginning (The King's Man) – February 13

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The second installment in the Kingsman franchise, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is a far weaker game than the original in almost every aspect. Which did not interfere with the box office in the least, so the new film in the series went into development almost immediately.

King's man: The Beginning is a prequel to the first two films, while the action will unfold during the First World War. According to the plot, the most terrible personalities of the world are preparing to unleash a war. But there are people who are ready to interfere with their plans. This, in fact, the main characters of the film will do.

Grigory Rasputin is among these villains, so you can safely expect a sufficient amount of cranberries. However, this will not interfere with viewing in any way if the plot is interesting, the characters are bright and memorable, and the action is exciting.

A Quiet Place Part II - March 2

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The original, released in March 2018, was a pleasant surprise thanks to its concept of soundlessness (which, unfortunately, was not fully implemented properly). A Quiet Place grossed over $340 million at the box office on a $17 million budget, so a sequel was inevitable.

A Quiet Place 2 will continue to tell the story of the Abbott family. After the horror that they faced at home, they have to learn even more horror, but already beyond it. During their journey, they learn that sound-only monsters are not the only enemies.

John Krasinski is back as director and writer, with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprising their roles.

From "A Quiet Place 2" I want to see at least a more logical scenario, as well as a competent development of the ideas embodied in the original. Well, in acting work, we have no doubt. They were already at a very high level.

The Invisible Man – March 26

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Initially, The Invisible Man was supposed to be part of Universal's Dark Universe, and the main role was given to Johnny Depp (Johnny Depp). But, as you know, the universe fell apart, and the project became independent.

The main thing that draws attention to the new interpretation of The Invisible Man is the director and screenwriter Leigh Whannell, who created one of the best films of 2018, Upgrade, from almost nothing.

In the story, Cecilia Cass, the main character, is on the run from her rich and obviously unstable boyfriend. After a while, he commits suicide and leaves her a very large share of his fortune as a legacy. However, Cecilia soon begins to suspect that her ex is still alive, and as a result of several deadly events, she slowly begins to go crazy, trying to prove that an invisible person is hunting her.

Judging by the trailer and a brief synopsis, we are expecting a psychological thriller with elements of horror. And if Leigh Whannell manages to make the film as cool as Upgrade was at the time, then we might be in for something really interesting.

Fairy – March 26

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

It is customary to treat Russian cinema with prejudice and distrust, and for good reason. There are good films, but, unfortunately, they do not get into the field of view of the audience so often.

Fairy is a new painting by Anna Melikyana, whose track record includes "Star" and "Mermaid". The film tells the story of the head of a virtual reality game development company, played by Konstantin Khabensky. At some point, murders begin to take place in Moscow, which the criminals film on camera, after which they demonstrate a characteristic gesture from the game. The protagonist, being a cynical person, decides to use this as a publicity stunt for his new project. And against the background of all this, he also meets a young activist who is able to change him.

And it seems that the director and screenwriter in the person of Anna Melikyana inspires some confidence, and Konstantin Khabensky is in the lead role, and there is also an opportunity to raise interesting topics. However, there is a chance that all this could turn into an agitation about the fact that “games are evil, they destroy people”, while the love line will be as insipid and unnecessary as possible.

But I want to believe that Anna Melikyana will be able to create a picture in which the story will be interesting, exciting and not banal.

No Time to Die - April 9

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The latest film in the long-running James Bond franchise, 007: Spectrum, is pretty average. Sam Mendes failed to repeat the success of 007: Skyfall Coordinates, so the new part was forgotten for a while.

In the new film No Time To Die, James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, retired for the second time and enjoys a normal life. But one day they turn to him for help. During the mission, he will have to return the kidnapped scientist, but the task will be much more dangerous than previously expected.

Initially, the picture was supposed to be directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Steve Jobs), but due to creative differences, he left the project. He was replaced by Cary Fukunaga, who directed the entire first season of True Detective.

From the film, we want to see a story that is logical and not overloaded with unnecessary elements, well-developed characters who want to experience it, as well as an exciting and unrestricted action. But whether the creators will succeed, we will find out in April.

Fast & Furious 9 - May 9

Fast and Furious 8 movie posterFast and Furious 8 movie poster

We may have been a little sly when we indicated in the title that there would be no superheroism, because Fast and the Furious in its current form sometimes feels like that. However, unlike films about people in tights, the famous franchise does not take itself seriously and understands perfectly well what it is.

Nothing is known about the plot of Fast & Furious 9. And, to be honest, you don’t really need to know, because from the film we expect absolutely delusional and unrealistic action, a ton of pathos, as well as countless conversations about the family from one bald, inflated man.

Soul - June 18

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

"Soul" is a new cartoon from the famous studio Pixar, which gave us such soulful films as "WALL-E", "The Secret of Coco", "Up" and "Inside Out". For the last two, by the way, answered Pete Docter. He also acted as the director and screenwriter of "Soul".

The tape will tell the story of Joe Gardner, a school music teacher. He always dreamed of performing jazz music on stage and at some point he gets a chance. However, in the course of an accident, his soul was separated from the body and ended up in another world, in which these very souls acquire new hobbies before being reborn in the body of a newborn child.

Knowing many of Pixar's previous works, "Soul" should be very sweet, touching and educational, which will appeal to both children and adults who have seen life.

The Protagonist (Free Guy) – July 2

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Have you ever wondered what would happen if someone tried to film Grand Theft Auto Online? If so, then perhaps Ryan Reynolds' The Lead will answer that question for you.

According to the synopsis, a bank employee leads a very ordinary life, until at some point he finds out that everything around is the world of the game. In it, gamers do whatever they want, and now the main character has to save him from complete destruction.

The trailer itself, of course, was fun, but knowing the attempts of filmmakers to film games or do something related to them, as a rule, does not lead to anything good. But we hope that the "Protagonist" will still be a light, fun and relaxed summer blockbuster with peppy action.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife – July 9

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The female reboot of Ghostbusters failed miserably. Then it seemed that the franchise put an end to, but there it was. In 2020, Ghostbusters: Descendants will be released - a direct continuation of the first two parts.

The plot will revolve around two teenage children. Together with their mother, they live on a farm in Oklahoma, which they inherited from their grandfather. However, after a series of earthquakes, the guys learn that their family is connected with the very ghost hunters who, after the Gozera attack on Manhattan in 1984, became a kind of legend.

Skepticism about "Ghostbusters: Descendants" is in the air now and then, because there is an example of the "Terminator", which they tried to resurrect three times in the last ten years, but nothing came of it.

However, there is hope, because Jason Reitman (“Smoking Here”, “Up in the Sky”, “Juno”), the son of Ivan Reitman, who, in fact, shot the first two franchise parts. And the trailer, to be honest, already looks better than the female version at the time.

Top Gun: Maverick - July 16

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Tom Cruise is clearly not going to retire anytime soon, so we'll see a sequel to the iconic Top Gun in 2020.

Top Gun: Maverick will take place 34 years after the events of the original. Peter "Maverick" Mitchell tries his best to avoid promotion in order to keep flying. One day, he decides to become an instructor for a new generation of pilots, thereby preparing them for the mission. Among the students there is also Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, the now deceased friend of the protagonist. And now Maverick will have to face his fears, which may come out in the course of this mission.

As before, Tom Cruise did all his own stunts, including piloting fighter jets. So the film can already be expected only for the sake of an exciting action. However, we hope that the story will also not let you down, and that the new characters will be interesting.

Tenet (Tenet) – July 16

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

Arguably one of the most anticipated films of next year, Tenet is Christopher Nolan's new film (Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight). Just the name of this director and screenwriter should already make people look forward to this picture. And as Nolan said, "Tenet" is his most ambitious film, combining a variety of genres.

In Nolan's best tradition, little is known about the plot. Judging by the trailer, the character of John David Washington dies, after which he is brought back to life with the ability to foreshadow events that have not yet happened. His mission is to prevent the Third World War, which is described as something more terrible than a nuclear catastrophe. And the only clue is only one word - the palindrome "argument".

The cast is traditionally strong. In addition to Washington DC, the film stars Robert Pattinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh and others.

So we look forward to another great Christopher Nolan film that will be discussed for a long time.

Last Night in Soho - September 24

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

"Last Night in Soho" is the new film from Edgar Wright, the author of such films as "Hot Hop", "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and "Baby Driver".

About the film itself, at the moment, almost nothing is known. We only know that it will be a psychological horror, and Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith and others are announced in the cast.

Wright had never made this kind of picture before. All his films before that were fun, relaxed and very funny. Therefore, we expect the tape because Edgar Wright is responsible for it, who decided to try his hand at a new genre for himself. But whether he managed to make another fit, we will find out in September.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 – September 25

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The Case of the Chicago Seven is a feature film written and recently directed by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The Great Game).

The tape tells about the events that took place in Chicago in 1968. An unsanctioned protest against the Vietnam War that interrupted a Democratic Party convention eventually escalated into a confrontation with police. Seven people who participated in the rally were put on trial on charges of conspiracy against the US government.

Movies are attracting attention already at least due to one Aaron Sorkin. However, in addition to this, The Case of the Chicago Seven also has a strong cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton, Sacha Baron Cohen other.

If everything works out, then we are waiting for a great drama, with great acting and an equally great script.

When the Storks Fell – October 8

The most anticipated films of 2020 are the First World War in one shot, the fearless Tom Cruise and no superheroism

The topic of Chernobyl, apparently, is gaining momentum again. In 2019, the HBO series of the same name was released, which received rave reviews from both critics and viewers. In 2020, "When the Storks Fell" will be released, directed by Danila Kozlovsky.

As with The Fairy, there is a lot of bias in this film, especially given the subject matter of the film. The plot, by the way, will focus on a firefighter who heroically eliminates the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

And here there can be several outcomes. The film can turn out to be very good or just average, or outright shit. Especially taking into account the fact that one of the screenwriters is Alexei Kazakov, who had a hand in such "masterpieces" as "Bitter!", "The Best Day" and "Super Beavers".

But we still believe in Russian cinema and in the fact that sometimes people who did frank shit are able to give out something really cool (fortunately, there are enough examples). Fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Dune - December 17

Dune poster 1984Dune poster 1984

In the mid-80s, they already tried to make a film adaptation of "Dune" by Frank Herbert (Frank Herbert). And not just anyone tried, but David Lynch (Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks).

Denis Villeneuve, the director of The Captive, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrivals, took over the new iteration. It was based on half of the first book, which tells the story of Paul Atreides. He must rally the Fremen and win the war for the desert planet Arrakis.

Apparently, for the new version of Dune, Warner Bros. takes it very seriously. There is a strong cast (Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and others), and a composer in the person of Hans Zimmer, and screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, " The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born).

Yes, and Denis Villeneuve, at least on the example of Blade Runner 2049, has already proved that he can make an expensive auteur film that can interest the viewer with a measured story, well-developed characters and a stunning picture.

The French Dispatch - 2020

Wes AndersonWes Anderson

And last on our list is The French Dispatcher by Wes Anderson (Isle of Dogs, Grand Budapest Hotel).

Unfortunately, not much is known about the film yet. The action will unfold in France, while the story will revolve around an American newspaper based in Paris. In general, the plot is described as a love letter to journalists of the 20th century, whose stories, in fact, will come to life on the screen. And the “French Dispatcher” will help in this unusual (as befits Wes Anderson) style, which will be partially black and white and animated.

The cast also announced such actors as Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Kate Winslet, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Benicio Del Toro ) and many others.

Here is our list of the most anticipated films of 2020. If you did not find here the picture that you personally are waiting for, then feel free to write about it in the comments under this material.
