Sam IU is the sister of Robin IU, the main character of Subnautica: Below Zero.
Prior to her sister's arrival on 4546B, Sam worked at the Phi Robotics Center under Zeta Landon. It was in this laboratory that she invented the spy pengling. Sam has been known to frequently abuse her creations, using them to survey the closed research site Frozen Leviathan, as well as spying on Marguerite Maida.
While working at Sanctuary Zero, Sam began a relationship with Daniel Valenti. Due to the nature of Daniel's job, their relationship faltered a few days before Sam went missing.
Why is Sam missing from S Subnautica: Below Zero?
Sam plays an integral role in the story of Subnautica: Below Zero. Not only is she the protagonist's sister, she also worked at the Phi Robotics Center and invented the spy Pengling.
Sam had a good heart when she worked on the planet. Unfortunately, this led to her demise. She not only disappeared, she died. This is especially hard on Robin because she warned her sister to quit her job with Alterra.
While working on planet 4546B, Sam learned about the Frozen Leviathan through Fred Lachance. Fred first discovered this creature and began to understand its strange skin condition.
After putting pressure on her romantic partner Daniel and Alterra researcher Vinh, Sam learned that the Frozen Leviathan had been infected by Kharaa and that the Alterra Corporation had mutated him.
Sam didn't want this bacterium to fall into the wrong hands, which is something you don't see in Subnautica: Below Zero. She tried to convince her colleagues to join her cause, but no one supported her.
This forced Sam to go it alone. She went to the Frozen Leviathan. Upon arriving, she accidentally alerted the guard known as Parwan. Sam entered the cave where the research was being done and Parvan followed her.
Sam set off an explosion in the cave, hoping to stop Kharaa's experiments on the Frozen Leviathan. The explosion caused a collapse, killing both her and Parvan.
Subnautica protagonist: Below zero, Robin, is notified of this. The information states that Sam's death was an accident as a result of her negligence. Robin eventually finishes what her sister started by rescuing the Frozen Leviathan.
