This guide to equipping your starter ship will help you improve your productivity significantly.
VICE Vanguard SE (ship/founder starter pack included)
This article will show you how to equip your Vanguard SE, Corvette SE or Voyager SE in an affordable way, increasing its performance by 50-200% in many ways.
This article will cover updating your Vanguard SE, Corvette SE or Voyager SE using standard modules to replace the GFI modules your ship ships with. You can often see double, triple or more performance when moving from a basic GFI module to a mid-range module from a commercial manufacturer.
This isn't meant to be a strict guide, and there are plenty of options for outfitting your ship, but it will give you a good idea of the direction you want to go. You also don't need to add all of these modules at once, often just adding a few modules to work alongside the standard GFI modules can make a noticeable difference.
VICE Vanguard SE (Founders Starter Crate)
The Vanguard SE is the easiest starter ship, and with only 2 hardpoints and 6 module slots, you are limited in the performance you can draw from it. However, equipping with standard modules can greatly extend the life and usefulness of the Vanguard SE and greatly reduce the time it takes you to refinish your next ship.
For the two Hard Points, I used the Allgad Heat Beam and the A1 Antimatter Quantum Cannon. You can also use the Galtride Astral Drill here as a mine beam for similar performance and cost. The Quantum A1 was chosen as the solo weapon because it gives some of the best DPS for the lowest power draw. On top of that, the Quantum A1 also grants exotic damage, which means it's effective against both shields and hulls, which is an important stat if you're only using one weapon. Moving around with the Quantum A1 Laser Cannon will significantly reduce power consumption, almost doubling the range and DPS by 20%+.
For the scanner, you can use any 1x1 mining scanner, Xeno 1 Pulse is the best all-round scanner currently available, but if it doesn't fit into your budget, you can also use the basic Alpha 1 scanner or the generic Core CJ scanner.
Lazarus Prime Class 1 is a good lone power module because it increases the total power available and also gives a minor power recharge speed boost. You may be able to pass on the GFI Power Core here or the alternative is the BB Alpha Core Class 4.
The Debel R1 Ion shield was chosen because it gives a 1600 shield while using minimal power, the recharge rate is on the lower side though. Some recommended alternatives are Debel Z1 or Kindled R1.
Hush X3 Booster is an add-on module, here you can place anything from PGC cargo mod to cloaking device. I prefer the Hush X3 because it currently gives a 200% movement boost, which means your Vanguard SE will now go 3x faster in sublight mode than stock, which is a big advantage if you need to avoid combat.

The next level in starter ships is the Corvette SE, I applied many of the same Vanguard SE principles to the Corvette SE build. For the weapons I have included the Reaper D1 as a potential option, it is a very high DPS 1x1 weapon but also has a high active power. Fortunately, the Corvette SE has enough slots for modules that you can install to counter this power draw.
At the forefront we have Lazarus Prime Class 1 core, and BB Alpha core class 4 or GFI standard power module. We also have a dual core Apotheosis 99, this is the only power recharge module I would recommend for a ship of this size as it has the most effect and doesn't negatively impact any of your power stats.
This ship has enough module slots and you have 4 module slot options that you can equip however you would like. I included the same Hush X3 from the Vanguard build to provide a massive light speed boost, the Phantoms Cloak device to make it easier to escape, V1 miner comfort for a 1100 HP boost, and a repair module so you can maintain HP without having to go back to the station.
Vulcan Voyager SE (Adventurer Starter Pack)
The final launch ship is the Vulcan Voyager SE, which is an incredibly capable launch ship. This build follows many of the same Corvette SE build principles, adding additional weapons and shields. For this build I would like to highlight the Reaper Viper V1 missiles as the second weapon, this is my favorite weapon due to its long range of 300 GU, as it is a projectile it is also much more effective at dealing damage to a target while in asteroid fields or surrounded by other objects.
These builds are just intended as a starting point for new players, they are not meant to be optimized builds or better builds. Your build will be very different depending on your play style and your goals in the game. You will almost certainly discover new modules and builds that you prefer over them eventually, but the above loads will give you a good all-round ship to start with.
