Valheim's success has skyrocketed since the release of Steam Early Access in early February, with over four million players now taking up ax and shield to earn their place in Valhalla. We have seen a lot of interesting things, but to date the game is not completed and there is a lot of new content ahead of us.
Ever since we first entered Viking purgatory with nothing but underwear and the will to survive, setting the course for a long journey through troubled waters and hostile Valheim biomes, the game has become a sensation, captivating the minds of at least 4 million Human. Part of its success as a survival game comes down to top-notch base building and a tough but fair progression system that has spawned some of the best gaming memes to date.
The simple yet versatile building system ignited the creativity of the players - players not only built the Eye of Sauron, but also created a replica of the Millennium Falcon using what we can only imagine - it's a lot tree. There's more where this comes from as the first update focuses on base building and recipes, but Iron Gate Studio has laid out exactly what we can expect from the future of Valheim.
Valheim Roadmap
There will be four major updates to Valheim, as well as many more additional modes aimed at balancing the game and fixing bugs. While there are no promised release dates yet, here's what to expect from every major Valheim update.
- hearth and home - housebuilding and cooking
- Cult of the Wolf exploration and combat
- Ships and sea - boat upgrades and more in the ocean biome
- New Biome Valheim – Mystic Lands
We can already visit the Mystic Lands, but they are currently devoid of content, so hopefully this update will fill in the gaps in our existing world. The bravest Vikings among us have also discovered another new biome - Ashlands, where you can mine Flametal from burning metal piles. This resource is currently unused, but we really want to see what cool Valheim weapons we can create with it.
Ways of game development
Apart from these four updates, there are more plans to be implemented, such as adding another Odin's raven, Munin, improving combat, and creating more locations for Vikings to explore.
