Epic confirms PSVR 2 Unreal Engine 5 projects in development

During this week's State of Unreal presentation, Epic Games confirmed that PSVR 2 games were in development using Unreal Engine 5.

Back in May 2020, Epic Games unveiled the next generation of its Unreal Engine 5, which promised big graphical and technical leaps. This demo focused on two major new technologies - Nanite (a geometry technology that allows artists to create very complex details on objects and surfaces) and Lumen (a dynamic global illumination system for realistic lighting).

At the time, Epic Games confirmed to UploadVR that Unreal Engine 5 would continue to support all current VR headsets.

Announced in yesterday's presentation, Unreal Engine 5 is now available to all developers. At about 26 minutes into the video below, Dana Cowley, Director of Communications and Technology at Epic Games, stepped in front of a large graphic featuring multiple game studio logos. She then said that Epic is "delighted to confirm that all of the great studios you see here are part of the Unreal Engine 5 community that continues to grow every day."

Interestingly, the PlayStation VR2 logo was displayed in the upper right corner, although this is the hardware and not the game studio itself. At the same time, the goal is clear - there are studios that develop games for PSVR 2 using Unreal Engine 5.

If you look closely, you'll also notice a few other studios and publishers that have flirted with VR in the past. In particular, the list includes the developer of Fracked and Phantom and the publisher of Little Cities nDreams. Just last week, nDreams announced a $35 million investment and confirmed it is working on PSVR 2 games.

Also on the list is Bloober Team, a studio that has previously ported some of its flat-screen games like Layers of Fear to VR headsets.

The list includes Devolver Digital, which has previously published VR games such as Gorn and, more recently, Tentacular. Last but not least, the list also includes 2K, a subsidiary of parent company Take-Two (which has said new VR games are coming soon) and the developer of the Borderlands franchise and its brief VR immersion.

Stay tuned for new PSVR 2 news throughout the year - or at least with one eye if you're using eye tracking.
