Everwild is a new adventure game from Rare Studios, the respected British game development team behind Nintendo classics like GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, along with more recent hits as a top notch Xbox studio, most notably Sea of Thieves. We don't know a huge amount of details about the game yet, but its recent appearance on Xbox Games Showcase revealed more information, including a new trailer.
On the one hand, Everwild is coming out exclusively on Xbox Series X and Windows PC, which means Rare is building the game from the ground up as a next-generation title. It's also a brand new IP, so don't expect narrative connections to other Microsoft franchises or even the studio's history itself. What is Everwild?
Everwild is the next game from British studio Rare, which is currently owned by Microsoft. Founded by the Stamper brothers in 1985, the studio has been developing innovative games for over three decades, including the likes of GoldenEye, Donkey Kong Country, Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Since being acquired by Microsoft in 2002, Rare has been developing mostly exclusive games for Xbox consoles, with modern examples such as the Kinect Sports series, Viva Piñata, and most recently Sea of Thieves.
Rare is a studio hard to fault for constantly branching out into new genres and playing with ambitious ideas, but its latest new IP, Everwild, would be easy to compare to Sea of Thieves, at least at first glance. Based on the trailer and marketing copy, we can assume that this is a similar style of play - a new MMO - within a fantasy universe. The development of the game is being led by studio veteran Louise O'Connor, who previously worked on Fable Legends and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
Everwild Xbox Game Showcase trailer confirms Xbox Series X exclusivity
First off, this trailer is a real eye-catcher. Each frame can be its own painting in a museum dedicated to Rare's work, perfectly embodying the magic the studio has evoked in its pictorial representation of nature in all its forms.
We're still unclear on what Everwild's gameplay will look like in action, though this latest cinematic suggests the focus will be on exploring and interacting with the creature universe's pantheon.
The attached blog post confirms that Everwild is truly "inspired by the beauty of the natural world around us", with players taking on the role of "Eternal as you explore and build connections with the world around you".
