Far Cry is the first part of the sensational series created by Crytek. In the game, you take on the role of a retired soldier who finds himself on a tropical island where creepy experiments are being carried out. The island is teeming with mutants and hostile mercenaries, the goal of those eager to rule the world. The hero needs to get to the heart of the laboratory complex of the complex in order to prevent the impending apocalypse.

Far Cry is a first-person shooter set in the tropical landscape of an island. In the game, you can use ground vehicles and an impressive arsenal of firearms. The main task is to destroy the hotbed of infection, as well as put an end to the intrigues of a harmful bioterrorist who wants to enslave the world with his deadly virus.

Plot

Former special forces officer Jack Carver is hired by a mysterious girl, Valerie Constantine, who, calling herself a journalist, asks Jack to deliver her to a distant, mysterious archipelago in hot Micronesia. Swimming to the islands, Valerie leaves the yacht on a jet ski and swims to the very shore, while Jack remains on his ship. At this moment, a grenade launcher is fired at the yacht, but the hero quickly manages to leave the boat a second before the explosion. At this moment, real madness begins for Jack Carver, because he, left without a boat, is forced to sail through the raging ocean, while trying not to fall under the bullets of mercenaries. The hero emerges already in an old military bunker, where he waits out this terrible night.

In the morning, the hero gathers his strength and begins to get out of the bunker. At the very exit, he finds a walkie-talkie, through which a mysterious assistant, calling himself Doyle, contacts him. The heroes get to know each other, and under the guidance of Doyle, a desperate Jack Carver begins to look for Valerie. Apparently, the girl, after disembarking, was captured and sent to an aircraft carrier, standing on the other side of the island. Having reached the destroyed ship, Jack learns that Valerie has been transferred to a bunker. After causing a big stir on Kabatu Island by destroying the Comms Center and a large armory, Jack meets personally with Doyle, who takes him to Vivarium Island, where the bunker is located. On this island, experiments were carried out on primates, and now the resulting man-made monsters - trigens - get out, tearing everyone in their path. During this time, Jack has already managed to see Dr. Krieger twice, the most important person in the archipelago. In the bunker, Jack rescues Valerie, and together they end up on the island of Amulong, where there was also an invasion of mutants, but this time not only primates, but also people. Valerie tells Jack the whole truth that she is not a journalist at all, but a CIA agent, like Doyle.

During the long journey on Amulong, the heroes unite again, and Doyle informs them of an electromagnetic field that blocks all attempts to communicate with the outside world. This field is created by a network of communication stations that Jack needs to destroy. Carver sails to the mountainous islands to destroy all the antennas, while Valerie goes to Pagao Island. The hero blows up all three antennas, as well as the fourth one, which was on the ZOL TERETIKAK ship. Embittered by the destruction of the antennas, Richard Crow, Krieger's right-hand man, engages Jack in a helicopter fight and loses it, after which he swims to Pagao. After that, one more point remains, namely the mobile communication center, which is located on the same island of Pagao. To find it, you need a palm, which was lost in the ancient catacombs. However, Jack finds him, finally kills Crow at the swamp river and connects the palm tree to a mobile communication center. Having met again in Val, the heroes begin the task of destroying the main factory for the production of the mutagen. Already in the factory, on the advice of Doyle, they inject themselves with a serum so that in the future they will not become infected with a mutagen and not turn into trigens. Jack and Valerie destroy the factory with a nuclear warhead, but they can't get too far and are knocked unconscious by the explosion. They wake up already on a helicopter in front of Krieger himself, who throws Jack down, and Val leaves with him.

Now the last and main island remains - Yakutan, which is simply teeming with trigens. Without any equipment, with only an M4 and ten rounds of ammunition, Jack finds a walkie-talkie, through which he re-establishes contact with Doyle. On the way to Krieger's office, the hero notices that he has begun to change, and Doyle tells him that he is infected. Jack Carver sneaks into the office in the volcanic crater and finds a visibly mutated Dr. Krieger and Valerie, also showing signs of infection. Jack wins the fight against Krieger, who tells him that Jack and Valerie couldn't have been infected through the air and dies. Carver learns that the serum they injected with Valerie is not a serum at all, but a real mutagen, and Doyle is guilty of this, having provided a false antidote. The real cure lies with Doyle, who insolently tells the heroes that they are no longer allies. Before the full transformation into a trigen, Jack has only an hour, and Valerie has even less. Leaving Val on the yacht outside, Jack travels to the complex, kills the traitor Doyle and retrieves the antidote. Jack and Valerie are cured and sail away on a yacht, leaving the cursed archipelago behind.

Notes

  • The only game in the series where the main antagonist was killed first and only then the secondary one.
  • On one of the levels there is a ship with the name in Cyrillic "Zol Teretњak". Translated from the Macedonian language, this means "Ominous cargo ship." The ship also carries the Macedonian flag.
  • Trigens die in the water for some unknown reason, the same goes for cars that explode in the water after a while.
  • The game has cheat codes that enable a third-person view, which is very well designed. However, it is also available when using vehicles.
  • On the cover of the game's box, Jack Carver is depicted floating, clutching an MP5 submachine gun with an optical sight and an underbarrel flashlight. The game also features an MP5 variant with a silencer, but without a flashlight and an optical sight.
  • The aircraft carrier from the second level looks like Unryu, although it is known that all Japanese aircraft carriers in World War II were destroyed.
  • At the beginning of the game, you can see a boar that sits behind the wheel of a car and controls it, later he will come out of there.
  • According to CryTek, Far Cry was supposed to have 24 levels and not 20, there should also have been several innovations and bug fixes, but at the end of 2004, the company's director began to rush employees, fearing the release of a new Half-Life.
  • The only game in the series where you can fight in the water.
  • Initially, Crytek wanted to make a game Dinosaurs Island (a dinosaur island survival game), but then decided to reject the idea.
  • Far Cry и Far Cry 5 are the only games in the series that allow you to switch between automatic and semi-automatic shooting modes.
  • The only game in the series without an open world and Free-play mode.
  • Previously, they wanted to add the dismemberment of enemies to the game, but due to the fact that it looked too cruel, they decided to remove this feature.
  • The game has subtitles that can be enabled with the game_subtitles 1 console command. What's funny is that you can only learn about this from the user manual, while this function is not in the settings.

Gameplay

A distinctive feature of the game is the huge game levels (locations), made in the form of picturesque Pacific tropical islands, as well as the ability to reach the goal in several ways, including using land or surface transport.

Weapon

The game uses a lot of existing and still developed types of weapons:

  • Machete A melee weapon that does a lot of damage. It is the only melee weapon in Jack Carver's arsenal. Its main feature is that it can be used in water. The game features a kukri, not a machete.
  • Falcon .357 - Large-caliber pistol with an 8-round magazine. Due to its high spread and low rate of fire, it is ineffective against mercenaries, but works well against trigens.
  • M4 - American assault rifle. Magazine for 30 rounds. It has 2 firing modes: single and automatic fire. It is the most common weapon in the Krieger archipelago.
  • MP5 - German submachine gun equipped with a built-in silencer. It has 2 firing modes: single and automatic fire. The only firearm in the game that allows you to attack without drawing attention.
  • P90 - Belgian rapid-fire submachine gun with a magazine for 50 rounds. The fastest fire weapon in Jack Carver's arsenal.
  • AG36 - German assault rifle equipped with an underbarrel grenade launcher and a variable magnification optical sight.
  • OICW - Assault rifle with built-in underbarrel grenade launcher and aiming module. It has a 40-round magazine.
  • Sniper rifle - British 50-caliber sniper rifle with a 5-round magazine and a very long-range optical sight.
  • RLX-9157 - reusable 4-shot shoulder-mounted rocket-propelled grenade launcher with a variable magnification optical sight.
  • Shotgun - 12-gauge automatic shotgun with a 10-round drum magazine. High efficiency in close combat, especially against mutants.
  • Machine gun - American light machine gun caliber 5.56 mm and a magazine for 100 rounds.
  • Pomegranates: fragmentation, dazzling (light noise) and smoke.
  • Stone - used to attract the attention of enemies.
  • Stationary weapon: six-barreled machine gun "Volcano" and a mortar.
  • shocker - a weapon that is present in the game's multiplayer. Deals pretty good damage, while they can attack by holding the attack button. Due to flaws, the stun gun was cut, but was returned in version 1.4 to the network game.
  • Engineer's Tool is a tool that the protagonist uses in a multiplayer game in some modes, making buildings near places with blueprints and thereby making it difficult for the enemy team to pass. When changing the fire mode, it allows you to deal damage identical to a machete.
  • C4 - a bomb used both in single player (to commit sabotage in certain places) and in multiplayer games (as an item that destroys buildings a few seconds after being laid).

Graphics

In Game Far Cry the game engine developed by Crytek - CryEngine is involved. Before Far Cry this engine was used in Crytek's X-ISLE: Dinosaurs Island tech demo to showcase the capabilities of NVIDIA GeForce 3 graphics cards.

The entire territory of the level is available immediately, without downloads. There are also no loads between indoor and outdoor spaces, although different lighting models are used. Character details improved with technology PolyBump, which is also developed by Crytek.

Patch 1.3 adds the High Dynamic Range effect, but you can enable it only if you have a video card that supports pixel shaders version 3.0.
