A dark cloud of sadness has enveloped the Call of Duty community as fans and professional players alike mourn the death of Fero, one of the most famous names in CoD esports.

On November 10, after word of his passing spread, Feraud's family confirmed it in a tweet from his account, and also denied rumors that the death was a suicide caused by depression. In a tweet that has since been deleted, a family member said he passed away from a heart attack.

“This is the family of Maurice, aka Fero,” the tweet read. “We regret to announce his passing. We would like to state that he did not commit suicide and did not struggle with depression. We appreciate everyone's love and support. We would also appreciate privacy at this time."

In response to the shocking news, tributes poured in from all corners of the CoD and esports community.

"I'm heartbroken, I really can't find the words," tweeted 100 Thieves 'Matt' Nadeshot 'Haag. "Thank you for everything. Rest in peace, brother."

"The Call of Duty scene has lost a legend," Nick Kolcheff wrote to NICKMERCS. “We were not very close with Fero, but we played several tournaments together and never lost. Played a million tournaments against each other and I never won. Calm down little bro. Take care of each other, life is precious.”

Toronto ultrastar Anthony "Methodz" Zinni wrote: "My heart is broken. When we spoke, it was only jokes and laughter. I am grateful that I teamed up with such a lively and passionate person and got to know him. Rest in peace, brother."

Both the Call of Duty League and the Florida Mutineers also posted messages of support on Twitter.

"Thank you for the positive impact on the lives of so many people," the Rebels tweeted. "The gaming community will never forget your humor, your kindness and dedication."

The team also confirmed that Fero's death was caused by "multiple heart attacks" and that his "tragic death was not ruled a suicide", which they reported at the family's request.

Fero began his Call of Duty career as a member of Denial Esports in late 2014. His career took off in the 2017-18 season of World War II, when the stellar conclusion to the campaign with Team Kaliber was when 100 Thieves recruited him into their new Black Ops 4 roster.

His short stint at 100T was followed by an equally short stint with Team Envy, and after the season ended, he ultimately failed to secure a spot in the Call of Duty League franchise, preferring to play on the amateur Challengers circuit.

However, he was a key mid-season acquisition for the Florida Mutineers, who went on to have great success in the regular season. With all the questions surrounding the Mutineers roster heading into the second year of the CDL, everything points to Fero being one of the players they were going to keep.

When it comes to passion and skill, Feraud was second only to very few in Call of Duty, as most of his peers and those connected with esports have been rating him as a top-tier player for several years now - the Mutineers' latest change season is proof of that.

The CoD community has lost one of its most eccentric personalities and an immense talent, a man whose drive to perfect his craft never sank below the maximum and in the face of extreme adversity never faltered.

Rest in peace.
