Finding the best player placement on the pitch to suit your playstyle can be a challenge for any new FIFA 20 player as there are tons of formations to choose from. We will help you decide and offer some of the best game options that we know today.
The game launched worldwide on September 27 after three days of early content access.
There are enough places to start a new game, be it Volta Football, Ultimate Team, and even Pro Clubs. But one thing that is critical to success in most of these modes is building a team on a pitch that's perfect for you.
So let's take a look at four different playstyles and systems that we think are well-suited for this:
3-4-1-2
For a counterattacking game, there is no doubt that this scheme is really effective.
As with any scheme, you need the right profile of players filling positions for this to work. The focus here is on flank midfielders, defenders and central midfielders.
If you are set up with a 3-4-1-2, it is imperative that you have fast wide players on the sides, preferably with good defensive stats. Their speed, regardless, should make them effective.
Central need variety. It is desirable to have a player with good passing and stamina. For defenders, sprint speed should be at least 60-75.
Non-standard tactics:
If you want to counter relentlessly, make sure the holding midfielders back off when attacking to make sure everything is in order, while the wingers/forwards should be instructed to "run behind".
Depending on how often you would like to counterattack, you can also instruct the attackers to open up and stay deep in the attack. We recommend setting custom tactics to "pressing after losing the ball" and "quick counterattack".
5-3-2 (bus)

In terms of profile, your defenders need to be strong, fast, and most importantly, stamina to follow the ball throughout the match.
Endurance is an important part of this formation, as ideally you will be a team holding pressure for most of the game, just waiting for your chance to turn the tide.
Waiting for one or two moments in a game can seem daunting and boring, but having tall players in the whole team and of course at least one specialist with excellent long-range shots and high goal conversion, you will always have a chance to ruin your opponent's life.
Non-standard tactics:
To do this, you will need your defenders to stay tight in the defensive line, so it would be a good idea to choose "stay out of the way while attacking".
4-3-3
Free, high pressing and attacking football is probably the most effective way to play in real life right now, and if you want to replicate it in FIFA 20, there is one setup that is perfect for it.
Formation of players 4-3-3. In previous years, most of the top-performing setups included forwards such as a left and right winger, but it looks like this setup is now the strongest. In addition, there is plenty of wiggle room to tailor players to your team.
The 4-3-3 comes in five different variations, with some emphasizing defensive midfielders and others really providing a link between midfield and attack – just what you need.
4-3-3 (4) offers the usual back four, with two normal central midfielders and one attacking pivot at the cutting edge. In this system, the team can move forward in an almost diamond-shaped fashion.
In terms of profile, you want two midfielders who can travel from box to box, join the attack and run after the ball when the team has lost it. Slow passers in this midfield setup will not survive long, and those with low stamina. Energy is the key and the longer it lasts the better.
Non-standard tactics:
Team Pressing is an in-game feature that can be selected as soon as you start every match and it really helps to encourage the team to put pressure on the ball where possible. It is recommended to use this sparingly, but it is highly recommended nonetheless.
The choice of player instructions, such as "overlapping" on the defender and for the attacking midfielder, "stay ahead", will give you the option of choosing a pass to the opponent's box in most cases.
4-5-1
The famous tiki-taka style of football may well be the goal for some fans to play like some of the great teams like Barcelona. Although, this cannot be confused with an endless detour behind and going nowhere.
Incredible teams based on possession are made up of players who can take the ball in any position on the field and find their way out of difficult situations, but also have space created by passing the ball. This is what you get from the 4-5-1 formation in FIFA 20 - no doubt about it.
With five midfielders with a striker trying to find gaps in the opposition's defense, you will always have someone available to complete the attack.
One of the worst spectacles in football is to see a striker running all over the game, eating leftovers and having little to no maintenance. With this lineup, the supply of the ball can come from the sides, through the middle.
Non-standard tactics:
There is actually a possession option in the custom tactics menu. This is something that should definitely be activated, along with covering full defenders, aggressive interceptions where possible, and choosing the "false 9" option on the striker.
This will bring him into the center of the pitch to help build attacks, similar to how Kane did at Tottenham or Roberto Firmino at Liverpool.
So, these are the best formations we have found for attacking, defending, counterattacking and owning the game in FIFA 20 to date.
