Fortnite Flashback - Butterfly Event and Kevin Cube Explosion
Two years ago, we first saw the Rift in the Fortnite Butterfly event.
The Fortnite storyline in 2018 was dominated by two characters: The Visitor and Kevin Cube. Both of these characters or story elements have had a huge impact on the world of Fortnite. Indirectly, you can still see their influence to this day - two years later.
A giant purple cube, later to be called Kevin, emerged from a giant rift in the sky on August 24, 2018. From there, he circled the map, dissolved into Loot Lake, teleported the central island across the map, and returned to its starting point - November 4 - exactly two years ago.
Then came what many players consider to be the best live Fortnite event of all time: the Butterfly Event. You can argue which event was your favorite, but there's no doubt that it was the first event that really gave players a glimpse of what Fortnite's story would be like.
After Kevin used up all of his energy, the dried cube remained in the sky before being struck by lightning and starting to spin. No one knew what would happen next as players were transported to a matrix style area that would later be called "The Gap".
A giant crack formed in the center of this area, shaped like a butterfly and moving towards each player. When players contacted the butterfly, they were transported back to the world of Fortnite and saw the remains of Loot Lake Island - and Kevin - fall to the ground.
It wasn't Fortnite's first live event and was eventually surpassed by the End event, but the Butterfly event set the stage for everything that happened next - even the shocking Doomsday event from Chapter 2 Season 2. It was our first look behind the scenes, and fans are still wondering what the meaning of what they saw.
It's crazy to think that it's been two years since our first trip to the Between. Will we go back there in 2020? Time will tell.
