Elden Ring has several starting character classes to suit every play style. While not all of them have been revealed yet, here are each of the initial classes from the Elden Ring beta.

Like most RPGs, Elden Ring features a variety of character classes that players can choose from at the start of the game. While some variation and customization is possible after the initial selection, these classes usually dictate that character's path for the rest of the game.

Whether that character is a battle-hardened knight in armor or a sorcerer with spells, the chosen starting class gives each player the best start on their journey through the Elden Ring.

Since the Elden Ring beta started, we've seen a few initial character classes in action. More will be included in the final game, but from what we've seen so far, we've created a breakdown of all the available Elden Ring character classes. We will also update this guide with more information as FromSoftware introduces more classes.

Elden Ring character classes: What's the difference?

As most people already know, Elden Ring is the latest game in the "Souls" series fromSoftware, serving as the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, Dark Souls (1-3) and Bloodborne. Although the game is the start of a new franchise and universe, it has a lot of similarities to what came before, including the initial character classes.

However, there are some differences from previous Souls games this time around that might even baffle Souls veterans. When it comes to Elden Ring character classes, certain terms and skills now mean something different from what they used to mean in earlier games. These changes have been identified below.

FromSoftware

The Blood Wolf class has now been replaced with the Rogue class.

Notable character classes in Elden Ring

There are 10 character classes available in Elden Ring. Here is an explanation of those that have been uncovered so far:

Rogue (formerly Blood Wolf)

This is a class for experienced Souls players or those who like to play as a tank. The vagrant resembles Force-based builds of Dark Souls, equipped with heavy armor and large swords.

However, the build doesn't make much use of it, ignoring magic, faith, and agility in favor of pure physical dominance with a large health pool. While the starting class was made with Souls veterans in mind, new players who love RPG tank builds will find a lot to like here.

Vagabond replaces Bloody Wolf from closed online test.

FromSoftware

A Vagabond approaches Storm Veil Castle in Elden Ring.

Hero

The hero is equipped with light armor and a large axe, they are like berserk warriors who hit hard up close, but also use magic to blow up enemies from a distance. In a way, the Hero borrows elements from all other classes, allowing the player to tailor them as they see fit.

They are not suited to heavy armor as they value agility, but they make up for it with high health and brute strength. The class is in danger of becoming a jack of all trades and master of none in the wrong hands, but players who find their groove with the hero are more likely to create an effective build in PvE and PvP.

The Hero class was named Champion in the closed beta test.

Martial Artist

Warrior is an agility build in Elden Ring. In previous Souls games such as Demon's Souls and the Dark Souls trilogy, the Warrior class was associated with strength and vitality. A class that will swing a two-handed ax with barbarian-themed armor - like the Hero class above.

However, in Elden Ring, the Warrior class is now more associated with roguelike qualities such as curved swords and bows. This is a class that usually moves quickly in medium armor, attacking enemies with a range of melee attacks and projectiles.

The warrior does not have as much health as some other classes, and their fighting style is based on agility and skill. It's a risky starting class for beginners in Elden Ring, but the rewards come with time.

FromSoftware

The Warrior class explores the open world of Elden Ring.

Prophet

The Prophet is essentially an Elden Ring faith-based mage, specializing in spells to either harm himself and allies, or harm and curse enemies. The spells are similar to the Miracles from the earlier Souls games and work a little differently than the standard sorcery.

In terms of equipment, Prophet will wear light armor to stay mobile and generally avoid close combat. They will also have limited health, making them vulnerable to strength-based opponents. However, from afar, the Prophet is deadly, and the difficult part approaches them.

Scoundrel

Every Souls game has a "bare" starting class. The one where the player character has a broken weapon, no weapons at all, limited stats, and starts the game with only a loincloth. In Elden Ring, this character class is Rogue.

This class is for experienced players who want to make the game as challenging as possible. Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki even warned new players against using this class in their first run - it would be wise to listen to him.

FromSoftware

Blood Wolf is similar to many Dark Souls builds.

Prisoner

The creepy-looking Prisoner class in Elden Ring has been revealed on the game's official Twitter page, but it raises more questions than it answers. So far, all we know is that the class is dressed in rags and looks like the Man in the Iron Mask with an aquarium-shaped helmet.

The helmet also resembles 19th century diving equipment, but it looks like it may have been sculpted around the characters' heads rather than placed over it. This may mean that the character class cannot remove the helmet during gameplay.

Such a design decision would be a first for a Souls game and could even limit the build. However, a helmet may offer some special benefits that make the class unique and desirable. Of course, this is just speculation - the helmet is most likely just a starting point.

There are currently no statistics or additional details on the Prisoner class, so we may have to wait until release to find out more. You can check out the class image below, next to the Warrior class.

Bandit

Bandit's starting character looks like a classifying agility that uses bows and light armor to dance around his enemies and strike from a distance. We also assume that they will be adept at stealth and poison traps. They are also likely to use scimitars and daggers in close combat.

Astrologer

The astrologer will likely be the classic wizard/caster of the starting character in Elden Ring. While the Charmed Knight uses a mixture of magic and tank, and the Prophet relies on spells (miracles for Souls veterens), the Astrologer will be for those who want to go all in with pure magic.

It will be interesting to see what comes under the "Glintstone sorcery" umbrella when the game releases.

Expected Elden Ring Character Classes

There are also 6 other known character classes in Elden Ring, although the details of each and how they will play is currently a mystery.

We'll be sure to update this guide as we learn more about the following Elden Ring character classes:

  • Samurai
  • Confessor
From Software

Elden Ring is written by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Early starting classes

The following classes were only included in the beta test and will not be in the final version of Elden Ring:

Enchanted Knight

The Enchanted Knight class was one of the most popular during the Elden Ring beta. It's an interesting mix between the classic Souls Knight and Sorcerer classes, merging them into one to encourage a varied playstyle.

Those looking to indulge in hand-to-hand combat and magic as a battlemage will be most attracted to this class. It will also allow players to experiment with both fighting styles and equipment that suits them best.

A great class for players who are new to Souls games.
