In 1998, a special task force was sent to investigate strange murders in the vicinity of Raccoon City. The fighters are attacked by a pack of bloodthirsty mutant dogs, and they are trying to escape in the farmstead nearby. But even there everything is saturated with the smell of death. Ammunition is scarce and the struggle to survive is difficult.

About Resident Evil

resident evil (from English - "Resident Evil", in Japan known as Biohazard) is a cult computer game developed by the Japanese company Capcom. The first part of the Resident Evil series. The game is positioned as a survival horror and gave impetus to the development of this genre.

The game was released in 1996 for the PlayStation, and was soon ported to other platforms. The game's commercial success and critical acclaim spawned sequels, film adaptations, turning the series into a worldwide popular franchise. In January 2015, an HD remaster with improved graphics was released for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms.

Plot

July 1998 In the vicinity of the small town of Raccoon City, monstrous murders have recently begun to occur. Police reports indicated that the attacks were carried out in groups of about 10 people, and the victims appeared to have been eaten. The police failed to find the killers, and then a special STARS squad was involved in the case, divided into Alpha and Bravo teams.

First, the Bravo team is sent to investigate, with which communication is soon lost. After that, the Alpha team is sent to search for them. While overflying the area where contact was lost with Bravo Team, Alpha Team fighters notice a plume of smoke coming from the ground and decide to land. After disembarking, the squad members carefully inspect the area. It turns out that the smoke came from the helicopter of the Bravo team. In the helicopter, Joseph Frost, one of the members of the Alpha squad, finds the corpse of pilot Kevin Dooley (in the original, a severed hand with a pistol). Suddenly, out of nowhere, a terrifying-looking dog pounces on him. Joseph is taken by surprise and dies a terrible death in front of his comrades.

The remaining members of the squad begin to fight off the dogs. At this time, the pilot of the Alpha helicopter, Brad Vickers, loses his temper and flies away, leaving his colleagues behind. The remaining four fighters (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton and Captain Albert Wesker) begin to retreat. Fleeing from the dogs, the police manage to run to some abandoned mansion, in which they take refuge.

The STARS begin to explore the mansion. It turns out that the former inhabitants of the house, for a strange reason, turned into the walking dead and began to attack the police. Wesker disappears in an unknown direction, and Chris and Jill begin to explore the mansion parallel to each other, killing zombies and mutants that appear in the mansion along the way. During the passage, Jill repeatedly receives help from Barry Burton (he helps her kill the first zombie, saves her from a trap with an impending ceiling, etc.), and Chris meets two surviving members of the Bravo squad - Rebecca Chambers and Richard Aiken - who is infected with venom from the bite of a giant mutated snake. Chris manages to deliver the medicine to Richard, but later he dies anyway (the option of his death will depend on the game circumstances). In addition, the Alpha fighters manage to find dead other members of the Bravo squad - Kenneth Sullivan and Forest Speyer. Forest "rises from the dead", turning into a zombie, but is again killed by former comrades. During the investigation, the fighters of the Alpha squad learn that the mansion belonged to Ozwell Spencer, the founder and president of the huge pharmaceutical corporation Umbrella. This house was a front for the corporation's underground laboratory, where illegal experiments were carried out to create a bioweapon based on the T-virus. The T-virus is capable of turning people into zombies, and its leak led to the infection of the corporation's scientists and the incident described. In the courtyard of the mansion, Chris frees a special zombie from the crypt, which is much stronger and more ferocious than the usual ones. Chris learns that these zombies are called "scarlet heads" and they appear under the long-term effect of the T-virus on ordinary zombies. At the back of the yard, Chris discovers an abandoned house near the mansion, and the occupant of the house turns out to be a certain monster in chains, formerly a man. Chris escapes the monster and returns to the mansion. The mansion is under attack by alpha hunters, the most common BOW created in the lab. Chris destroys the mutated snake in the mansion's library and then saves Rebecca from the hunters.

Jill also explores the mansion, destroying zombies and mutated dogs. Later, Jill gets to the residence of the scientists of the corporation near the mansion. Jill discovers Barry there and notices that he is acting strange (in fact, Barry was secretly talking to Wesker). At the residence, Jill also has to deal with various BOWs (giant spiders, a mutated carnivorous plant 42, as well as experimental sharks). Jill pumps water out of the shark lab, killing them, and also poisons the rhizome of the mutant plant. Later, Jill returns to the mansion and finds the entrance to the underground cave labyrinths, which are full of mutant spiders and various traps. In the dungeon, the girl meets the wounded commander of the Bravo squad - Enrico Marini. Enrico tells Jill about the involvement of the Umbrella corporation in what is happening and reveals that there is a traitor in the Alpha squad who works for the corporation and specially lured the STARS fighters here. However, he does not have time to say the name of the traitor, as someone (possibly Wesker) unexpectedly shot him, hiding in the dark. At this time, Chris also explores other levels of the caves. There he is again attacked by a monster in chains, however, using intricate cave passages, he again hides from the monster. Chris gets out through the underground passages to the house in the forest, in which he was earlier. In the house, according to the preserved records, he learns that this monster is Lisa Trevor. Her father, George Trevor, was the architect who designed the mansion. He and his wife were later targeted by Spencer. Lisa herself became one of the first experimental subjects of the corporation and the most stable. It tested both the T-virus and the parasites implanted by the corporation into mutants to be able to control them. In addition, Lisa's resilience helped Umbrella scientist Birkin modify the T-Virus, creating the G-Virus.

Jill gets out of the caves and down the stairs in the basement of the mansion down to the corporation's laboratory. In the basement, she meets Barry, after which the two of them finally defeat Lisa Trevor, who attacked them. Chris, following in Jill's footsteps, also descends into the Arklay underground research facility. The lab turns out to be filled with zombies and BOWs called chimeras (made from a mixture of human and fly DNA). There, Jill meets Captain Wesker and learns that he was the traitor who worked for Umbrella. Wesker, as it turned out, specifically lured the STARS fighters into the mansion in order to test the corporation's bioweapons in combat conditions. And now Wesker intends to test on the surviving subordinates one of the samples of the Tyrant project (a project to create a super-soldier) - Tyrant T-002. At the same time, Wesker also pursues his own mercenary goals - to track the fighting qualities of the Tyrant and sell the data to Umbrella's competitors. Jill also learns that Barry was in league with Wesker, though he didn't want to, as Wesker threatened his family. Wesker activates the Tyrant, but he awakens and kills Wesker himself. Jill temporarily incapacitates the Tyrant in a short fight, after which she and Barry head for the exit. Meeting Chris and Rebecca along the way, they all go to the helipad outside, where they establish a connection with Brad Vickers, who is ready to rescue them in a helicopter. In the laboratory at this time, the self-destruct mechanism is activated. The newly risen Tyrant becomes stronger and goes outside, engaging in a fight with the STARS fighters. Brad, who flies in and drops a rocket launcher, helps the fighters to defeat the monster. The tyrant is destroyed, the surviving members of STARS are loaded onto a helicopter and fly away. Spencer's mansion and the underground laboratory below it soon explode.

Weapon

There are seven types of weapons in the game (nine types in the PC version):

  • Combat knife - standard army knife. It is in the arsenal of both Chris and Jill from the very beginning of the game. It is the weakest weapon in the game.
  • Pistol Beretta M92FS - standard police pistol. It is in Jill's arsenal from the very beginning of the game, and Chris finds it in the hall after returning from the dining room.
  • Shotgun Remington M870 only effective at close range. If, aiming at the ceiling, let the zombie get closer, then you can decapitate it. It is located in one of the rooms of the mansion, but in order to get it, you have to solve the puzzle with the falling ceiling.
  • Revolver Colt Python - a very powerful weapon. Located in one of the rooms, in order to take it, the player will have to solve the riddle with the head of a tiger. Kills enemies (except "bosses") with one or two shots.
  • Bazooka grenade launcher — a universal weapon against different types of enemies due to the presence of three types of ammunition: explosive, fiery and acid. It is located on the terrace of the second floor of the mansion. Only available to Jill.
  • Flamethrower - medium power weapon, effective only at short distances. Found in a dungeon where you can find 2 flamethrowers. True, it is impossible to take the flamethrower out of the dungeon. Only available to Chris.
  • Rocket Launcher M-66 - The most powerful weapon in the game. In the final battle, Jill or Chris destroy the Tyrant from it. The Rocket Launcher can be obtained by beating the game in less than three hours, making no more than three saves, and not using first aid sprays (while using herbal mixtures does not affect the receipt of a secret weapon).
  • Machine MAC-10 (only in the PC version) - submachine gun. Equal in power to the Beretta, but much more efficient due to its high rate of fire. Only available to Jill.
  • Minimi machine gun (only in the PC version) - a heavy machine gun. Power like a shotgun. It also has a high rate of fire. Only available to Chris.
  • Pistol Beretta Custom Edition - Modified Beretta pistol. It differs both externally and increased power. Has a chance to decapitate a zombie with multiple shots. Only available in the Director's Cut in Advanced game mode.

inventory system

The main character of the game has a limited inventory, which creates its own specifics of passing the game. However, Jill has 2 more inventory slots than Chris (so Jill is much easier to play than Chris). This limitation is compensated by the presence of large chests in the mansion, where the player can put things that are not currently needed. At the same time, if a player put an item in one chest, then he can take this item from another. In the inventory, as a rule, one item occupies one cell. Thus, for example, one key will take up as much space as a rocket launcher.

Herb Mixing System

The game has a system of using "first-aid kits" that has a certain complexity. The player comes across three types of herbs.

  • Blue Grass - Heals the player from poisoning.
  • Green grass - restores 25% of health.
  • Red herb is useless on its own, but a mixture of green and red herbs restores 75% of health.

Herbs can be mixed with each other, which can significantly save space in your inventory. In one mixture there can be no more than three parts of herbs. Each herb makes a certain contribution to the action of the mixture. So, the presence of blue grass in the mixture causes the removal of poisoning, in addition to increasing health. A mixture of two green herbs restores 50% of health, as well as 2 green herbs taken by the player separately. The panacea is a mixture of green, blue and red herbs. Such a mixture completely heals the player and removes poisoning.

In addition to herbs, the game also has ordinary, "synthetic" first aid kits, first aid sprays, but their use reduces the game rating. Some secrets, such as the M-66 rocket launcher or the Colt Python revolver (with infinite ammo), can only be unlocked if no such first-aid kits have been used throughout the game. The use of herbs does not reduce the rating.

Files

During the game, the player will come across various documents - diaries, notes, reports, and so on. They do not take up space in the arsenal, as they are stored in a separate section of the inventory. Some files are hints for solving puzzles (for example, John's diary, which contains the login and password for an important computer that controls the opening of doors in the laboratory), the rest allow you to better immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the game. Thus, the caretaker's diary, peculiar in that on the first pages the author's acquaintance with "strange creatures" - the results of experiments - is gradually revealed; further describes a certain space suit, which the author is obliged to wear by order of his superiors, and from which he gets a terrible itch.

At the end of the diary, it becomes clear that the author is turning into a zombie: he writes that his body began to decompose and a piece of flesh fell off his hand. In addition, as the transformation into a zombie, the phrases used by the author of the diary become simpler and shorter. The penultimate page of the diary consists of a few simple sentences ("I'm itching all over. Scott came. He's ugly, and I killed him. Delicious"), and on the last page, instead of the date, the number 4 is simply put down and only 2 phrases are written: "I itch. Tasty".

Enemies

Normal

  • Zombie - former employees of the Umbrella Corporation, infected with the T-virus and mutated into monsters. The most frequent and predictable enemies in the game. Quite often they appear unexpectedly, for example, jump out of the closet. They can differ in survivability, damage dealt and sharpness of feelings. The easiest way to shoot them from long distances. If you raise the shotgun up, the shot will blow the zombie's head. If you slash a zombie with a knife (or shoot it with a pistol) right in the legs, it will fall to the floor, after which it is easy to finish it off. Zombies "sleeping" on the floor can grab and bite the main character's leg. Also, some zombies can puke acid on the character. Outwardly, they are divided into 3 types: attendants, scientists (dressed in lab coats) and test subjects (without clothes). The latter are noticeably stronger than the others.
  • Cerberus - Infected Dobermans. Aggressive and fast enemies, usually attack in packs. Pretty weak, but they can knock the hero to the ground. If you shoot a Cerberus while it is jumping, it will fall to the floor.
  • Ravens birds infected with the T-virus. They always fly in flocks and, despite low survivability and low damage, they are quite a danger in battle, because it is quite difficult to hit them. It's best to just run away from them.
  • Snakes - found only in the garden and in one of the dungeons. Poisonous. As with crows, it is better to run away from them, because after the destruction of several snakes, new ones appear from somewhere.
  • Bees - meet once per game - in the hostel. Can poison the main character. It is better not to waste ammunition on them, since the hive from which bees regularly appear cannot be destroyed.
  • Spiders - giant poisonous creatures that leave behind the same poisonous little spiders after their death. You should not use ammo against the spiders, they can be crushed by simply running over them.
  • Hunters - one of the strongest enemies in the game. Nimble and aggressive, unpredictable, able to decapitate a hero with one blow (when health is below Caution). It is easy to recognize their presence by the characteristic sound they make, similar to snapping fingers. A revolver is effective against them (often the first shot is fatal). You can also use a shotgun against them - it is also very effective, since at close distances the shot throws them at a fairly decent distance. If the hunter is at a long distance, it is best to run away from him.
  • Neptunes - Infected shark-like fish. They meet only once - in the flooded basement of the hostel. You should not fight with them - you just need to pump out the water, after which they will harmlessly wallow on the floor.
  • Plant is a green stalk protruding from a crack in the floor in the hallway of the dorm. Attacks the hero every time they pass through the corridor, taking away a small amount of health. Invulnerable. The only way to get rid of him is to close the crack with the statues standing in the corridor. Disappears when Plant 42 dies, as it is part of it.
  • Chimeras - fast aggressive creatures that can run on low ceilings and attack both from below and from above. They live in the power plant laboratory. An effective weapon against them is the Beretta M-92F pistol, since nimble movement over the character's head forces them to re-aim, which the player often does not have time to do. With one shot from a Beretta M-92F pistol, such an enemy can be thrown to the floor, but standing under him and trying in vain to shoot upwards at a right angle is not recommended. When shooting randomly from more powerful weapons, the player runs the risk of spending a large amount of ammunition.

Bosses

  • Yevun - a giant snake, occurs twice per game: in the attic and in one of the rooms on the second floor (in the remake, the second appearance is in the library). Against her, it is recommended to use a Colt Python revolver and a Remington M-870 shotgun, playing as Jill, three to four shots of acid grenades are enough.
  • Plant 42 is a huge carnivorous plant that has been exposed to the T-virus. Is in a sense a mini-boss, growing up in a dorm. As befits a plant, it is vulnerable to fire, so when playing as Jill it is easily destroyed by incendiary charges, and when playing as Chris - with a flamethrower. If you solve a simple puzzle, prepare V-gases and pour them on the root of Plant 42, the root will dry out, and the fight with the plant will be even easier. Also, in Jill's scenario, this boss can be killed by Barry.
  • Black Tiger - a giant gray spider that lives in the dungeon. He is also a mini-boss. An effective weapon against him is the Remington M-870 shotgun. Usually three or four shots are enough. You can also use the Bazooka grenade launcher (when playing as Jill) or the flamethrower (when playing as Chris). Like all spiders in the game, after his death leaves small poisonous spiders.
  • Tyrant T-002 is the final boss of the game. A large humanoid creature with a hypertrophied heart and a right arm armed with long bladed claws. At the first meeting, it moves slowly, at the second - very quickly, but it is quite possible to dodge and run away. The Tyrant hits often, with each blow for a certain period, slowing down the character, therefore, standing close, there is little chance of defeating him. Destroyed only with a grenade launcher, which is dropped by a member of the STARS squad, pilot Brad Vickers, from a helicopter.

Director's Cut

A remastered version of Resident Evil on the Sony PlayStation, called Resident Evil: Director's Cut, was released in September 1997, 18 months after the original game's release. It was planned to remove the censorship from the bloody scenes that were in the European and North American versions of the game. In the censored versions, the video is black and white, Chris does not light a cigarette when he is introduced, fragments are cut from many videos, for example, Kenneth's severed head is no longer in the video about the first zombie. At the beginning of the game, you can choose one of three difficulty levels:

  • Beginner - low difficulty level: the number of rounds doubles, the enemies become weaker.
  • Original - medium difficulty level, the same as in regular Resident Evil.
  • Advanced is the modified and most difficult difficulty level. Detailed differences from the normal mode are given below. If you hover over this difficulty in the difficulty selection menu and hold down the right arrow, the inscription will turn green, and the number of rounds in the game will double and the enemies will become weaker - in fact, you will get a low difficulty.

Differences between Advanced and Original modes:

  • The camera has been changed in 85% of the rooms.
  • Enemies have appeared in some rooms.
  • The number of enemies in the game has been doubled.
  • Both Jill and Chris start the game in different costumes (with reduced defense).
  • Unlike the original game, a room with additional clothes is immediately available. In the original, the door is locked, and the key is given only after the game is completed.
  • Items are placed elsewhere.
  • Instead of the original Beretta M92FS pistol, the player is given a Beretta M92FS Custom. The weapon is capable of decapitating a zombie's head 50% of the time.
  • The strength and health of all enemies have been doubled.
  • The health of the characters is reduced by almost 3 times. So, if a character is bitten by a zombie and cannot be unhooked, then he will kill the player the first time.
  • On the balcony of the second floor of the estate, it becomes possible to kill Forest as a zombie.
  • In the barracks, the floor now has three cracks instead of one from which Plant 42 spawns.
