About The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Development of the game began in 2017, after the completion of work on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The first teaser trailer was shown at the Nintendo Direct at E3 2019.
During a Nintendo Direct presentation in February 2021, series producer Eiji Aonuma stated that the developers would reveal more information about the game later in the year. At the follow-up Nintendo Direct at E3 2021, Nintendo showed a trailer revealing gameplay, story elements, and the game's original release date of 2022. Although the trailer did not reveal the game's official name, several fan theories about the game's plot emerged. According to Nintendo of America spokesperson Bill Trinen, Nintendo is keeping the game's subtitle under wraps because "those subtitles […] are starting to give little hints of what might be coming." Trinen also responded to the comparison of the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - the previous direct sequel in darker colors, which used the same assets as the predecessor. He considered the comparisons unfair, stating that upcoming Nintendo presentations will show "what this game stands for and what makes it so unique".
Hidemaro Fujibayashi will once again be the project manager. The developers took as a basis the ideas left over from the development of the previous game and its add-ons, and intend to fit a new story and gameplay elements into the original world. At the game's presentation during E3 2021, Aonuma stated that the "adventure setting has been expanded to include the sky above Hyrule", drawing some comparisons to the intended scope and vision.
