Genshin Impact is gaining an unusual number of social media followers in a week, sparking controversy and accusations. The new accusations note that official accounts Genshin impact social networks use bots as fake followers to artificially increase popularity. There are discussions on this topic, although it cannot be definitively established who is behind this, whether it is miHoYo or another related company. The main controversy began after a tweet by Twitter user @HoYoverseJapan, who is not affiliated with HoYoverse.
According to these allegations, Genshin Impact's Weibo accounts have gained significant followings in a short period, the disappearance of which is indicative of the alleged presence of "fake followers". While the allegations specifically target Weibo, other social media accounts may have been affected as well.
There are two tweets that should be considered. In an old tweet, @HoYoverseJapan claims that HoYoverse was seen buying fake followers on Weibo and the Genshin Impact account gained almost a million followers in seven days. It had previously taken the company three months to reach the same number of subscribers.
The update in the top tweet notes that the average daily subscriber growth has dropped by 87,5% from 200 to 000. However, Genshin Impact's official Weibo account has reached 25 million subscribers.
@HoYoverseJapan also notes that Weibo users often acquire robotic followers for their opponents in order to create an atmosphere that even their own followers are attacking the game, person or account. This is important to consider as it is not possible to directly prove that HoYoverse acquired subscribers for Genshin Impact. Some players believe that anyone could pay for bots on Webo. In particular, Twitter user @curryasdfg claims that some people acquire followers for "their opponents" to make them look bad.
Since it is impossible to confirm what is happening in this case, it is worth considering the involvement of other companies and famous personalities in similar situations.
Other examples of using bots to increase activity in social networks are given. One report published by Sortlist in September 2022 indicates that many famous celebrities have had increased activity thanks to fake followers. The following percentages of celebrity suspicious followers were mentioned in this report:
- 28% Nicki Minaj
- 28% at Hande Ercel
- 27% for Miley Cyrus
- 27% for Katy Perry
- 27% for Demi Lovato
- 27% Justin Timberlake
- 26% for Zendaya
- 26% for Gal Gadot
The report also mentions that companies like Pizza Hut have as many as 30% of subscribers potentially fake. This suggests that a large company such as HoYoverse/miHoYo/Cognosphere may have been involved in a similar practice for Genshin Impact. However, it is worth noting that anyone who is not affiliated with these companies could also pay for the bots.
Final Poll: Do you think it's possible that Genshin Impact is buying fake followers for their social media accounts? I look forward to your thoughts in the comments!
