Biography

Life before the epidemic

Tommy grew up in Texas with his brother Joel. All his life he was under the care of his brother, and later helped him raise his niece Sarah.

Events in The Last of Us

Tommy's first appearance in the game is in a phone conversation with Joel discussing the importance of keeping the contract with a local contractor. Hours later, perhaps having witnessed the start of an epidemic, he makes a wake-up call to Joel's house, but Sarah answers. Tommy did not have time to finish, the line breaks. He tries to contact his brother on the cell phone, but to no avail. Unable to get in touch with his family, Tommy gets into his jeep and heads towards their house. Tommy rushes to pick up Joel and Sarah, who have already encountered a CCI-infected neighbor, Jimmy Coopers. Together they try to get out of the city. Passing by people walking on the side of the road, Tommy tries to pick them up, but Joel categorically forbids this. Caught in a traffic jam and almost becoming a victim of an attack by the infected, Tommy turns the car around and pulls off the highway, trying to find a detour through the central streets of the city. Already in the city, the family gets into an accident. Tommy manages to avoid serious injury, but his niece was much less fortunate. Joel is forced to carry her in his arms, Tommy covers them with a revolver that he receives from his brother. Their foot crossing through the streets swarming with the infected is successful. Be that as it may, another wave of infected forces them to seek shelter in one of the buildings. Tommy has to hold the door so that his brother and niece can get as far away as possible. Unfortunately, it is not known exactly how Tommy managed to get rid of the infected that were breaking through the door. It can be assumed that he managed to escape or hide, the attention of the attackers was switched to something else, or Tommy managed to shoot all the attackers. Tommy manages to arrive in time in the wake of his relatives at the very moment when the soldier, standing with his back to him, was ready to make a control shot to Joel. Without wasting time to think, Tommy fires the first shot, killing the soldier, but Sarah can't be saved. She dies from a stomach wound in the arms of a crying Joel.

Years after the CCI outbreak, Tommy and Joel manage to make it to Boston. Initially, Joel looked after Tommy, but the actions committed by the brothers in order to survive gave Tommy nightmares from which he suffered. They forced him to leave his brother and join the Cicadas, led by Marlene, who promised him a ray of hope. However, after a while, Tommy leaves the Cicadas and leaves Boston with the words addressed to Joel: "I don't want to see your damn face again." However, leaving Boston, Tommy advises Marlene to seek help from her brother if necessary.

Tommy finds shelter in an abandoned hydroelectric power plant in Wyoming, Jackson County, where he soon helps the local community turn the station into an island to survive in the hell that goes on around. There he marries a woman named Maria, the leader of the colony, and together they take the community under their guardianship, protecting the station from the constant raids of bandits. For a few months, Tommy drove back to Texas, home. Obviously, all things were lost and stolen long ago, but he managed to find an old photo of Joel and Sarah, where she holds a football trophy.

In the fall of 2033, Tommy meets his brother, accompanied by an unfamiliar girl. He does not hide the fact that he is glad to see his brother after such a period of time. He meets Ellie and introduces Joel to Maria. In the first minutes of Joel and Ellie's arrival at the station, Tommy tells him about his plans: the residents plan to bring the station back to "life". By a happy coincidence, local mechanics manage to start one turbine, which brings everyone into indescribable delight. But Joel was looking for a private conversation with Tommy, and, being finally alone, he tells him about the purpose of his journey. Joel asks for help to get Ellie to the Cicadas, as he believes Tommy knows their current location, while revealing the fact that Ellie is immune to the CIC. Tommy categorically refuses, which causes conflict between the brothers. Fortunately, the dispute does not have time to go beyond the bounds of decency, as at this very time the station is attacked by another wave of bandits. Joel helps Tommy fight back and rescues Ellie and Maria. Noticing how Joel cares about Ellie, something changes in his views, and he is ready to take on the service. However, such news does not please Mary at all. They argue loudly, and when Ellie asks Joel about the reasons, he says that he will explain everything later. But Ellie still manages to guess the nature of the dispute. In a fit of emotion, she steals a horse and runs away. Tommy and Joel, learning about this, set off in pursuit. Along the way, they run into bandits, but they manage to eliminate the threat. The brothers find Ellie at a ranch near the station, and while Joel and Ellie sort things out, Tommy stands guard over the house. After a couple of minutes, he notices a group of bandits approaching the house, and hurries to warn the guys upstairs. Fighting back without loss, the trio rides towards the main habitat of his community. After admiring the view of the city, Joel informs Tommy that he is refusing his request, putting Ellie on his horse. Tommy began to question, but Joel made it clear that the decision was final. Tommy says goodbye to his brother and his companion, offering to join them at the end of their mission. Their paths diverge.

Over the rest of the autumn, winter, and part of the spring, Tommy and Maria manage to transform the settlement into a protected fortress, providing complete security for its inhabitants. With all the business in Salt Lake City completed, Joel and Ellie decide to head exactly where they are staying.
