Holoception: Action VR Game with 3rd and 1st Person Incarnation
The rather unique cartoonish look of HOLOCEPTION, which offers a seamless mix of first and third-person VR gaming, will launch in Early Access on October 24th.
We've been watching with interest all the intriguing GIFs that Holoception developer Holonautic has been posting over the past few months showing a game that combines physics-based cartoon action with seamless switching between first and third person VR perspectives. The title now has an October 24 Early Access release date on Oculus (Rift) and Steam (Index, Vive, Rift) for $25.
In addition to the physics-based gameplay, a key concept of the game is what the developer calls the "personification system", which allows you to impersonate a character even in a third person.
The player incarnates and controls a small character. Using modern articulation techniques, the head and hand positions accurately reproduce the player's pose, but from a third person perspective. Because the real player is much larger than the character they control, they can fully run, jump, and climb with much less chance of causing motion sickness compared to first-person view.
But if you want to switch from third person to first person, you can do so even in the middle of a fight.
Fully control the camera in real time to choose the best angle to enjoy every moment of the game! You can manually rotate, click, and zoom in on the camera. The freedom to choose 1:1 scale or see the game as a tiny puppet world from God's point of view.
The gameplay looks like it will be a combination of physics-based combat, puzzles, and some sandbox gameplay, with a bit of comedy.
Holoception certainly looks like it has fresh ideas and we're looking forward to the full release when it launches in Early Access next week.
