HONKAI STAR RAIL LEVEL LIST: CHARACTER SUMMARY

You've seen the rankings, now get to know the characters a little more! Below is a summary of each character currently featured in the Honkai Star Rail tier list.

ARMOR

Able to advance 1 character's turn on your team, improve their DMG result, and not to mention her ultimate which increases ATK and CRIT DMG for 2 turns, Armor is one of the best buffers in Honkai: Star Rail right now. Need your main DPS to skip a turn and potentially kill the boss, or badly need your healer to heal you? Armor will be the answer that can change the course of the battle. This is the reason Armor is currently at S+, because it is the only one that can constantly advance your ally's turn from Mastery, and the only one that buffs your entire team's CRIT DMG.

HIMECO

Mom in Honkai: Star Rail. Himeko's skill will deliver fire attacks to nearby enemies and her end goal will deal a lot of fire damage to all enemies. Not only that, once Himeko fully charges (3 stacks) her passive that stacks every time an enemy's weakness breaks, she will also deal an AoE fire attack to all enemies. Isn't it nice to see big damage everywhere while Himeko just casually sips on a cup of tea?

LOCHA

(CURRENTLY NOT RELEASED)

When you use Luocha on your team, you will continue to see all the heals that Luocha will do automatically on your ally. Oh, is your team already below the 50% HP mark? Here, let Luocha heal you. Oh, Luochi's stack is already complicated? Now every time an enemy attacks an ally, your ally will also be healed. Do you see that the enemies got the buff? With Luocha ending, he will inflict an AoE Phantom Attack on all enemies and he will dispel 1 enemy buff. And the best part is that dispelling the opponent's buff will also increase the stack of Lochi, thus more healing for your team. Who knows, maybe this time you will be able to defeat the boss who always has an atk buff to them thanks to Luochi's skill. Preventing death itself due to the healing speed that Locha gives is the reason why Locha deserves to be at S+ level.

ZELE

The best of the best DPS. What could be better than 1 buff? 2 buffs! Activating the Strength skill will increase her SPD by 25% and if she can defeat 1 enemy she will get an extra turn and she will also get an extra DMG buff. Not only that, her ultimate damage is actually one of the biggest damage dealers in the entire history of Honkai: Star Rail characters. Either early game, mid game, or even late game, Seele will definitely hook you once you see her amount of damage. Pair it with Armor for more damage, you'll probably see not only a 5 digit damage number, but probably even a 6 digit or 7 digit number. That's why Zele instantly becomes one of the S-tier characters, because it will be quite difficult to compete with Force nuclear damage.

DAN HENG

The person who almost kissed you in the introduction to the story. If only he kissed the protagonist, then this is an automatic tier S list for Dan Heng. But jokes aside, Dan Hang's mastery will apply a slow debuff that amplifies his final damage to the enemy. If his ally uses his skills (healing, buff, etc.) on him, then his passive chance to apply Wind RES PEN to the enemy will be higher, resulting in higher damage. It is for this reason that Dan Heng can also be your reliable primary single purpose DPS unit. Not to mention, since you get Dan Heng at the start of the story, Dan Heng can help you with your early game progression.

CHEETAH

Your faithful protector. As a sub-dps tank, Cheetah's kit revolves around covering your entire team with his shield and a high chance of freezing a single enemy from his mastery. His shield only comes from his ultimate, which means you need to keep charging energy to make sure Cheetah can protect your team from his shield, which scales to his DEF. So time and energy management is really important if you want to use Gepard on this team. Towards the middle of the game and above progression, his shield is actually quite reliable.

JING YUAN

Jing Yuan is your AoE lightning DPS character. His mastery will deal AoE lightning damage to all enemies, and his ultimate will also deal higher AoE lightning attack damage to all enemies. What sets Jing Yuan apart from other AoE DPS's is his passivity. Jing Yuan will also have a Lightning Master that will also deal with extra attacks on a single enemy and extra AoE attacks on nearby targets. Instead of dealing nuclear damage, Jing Yuan is your explosive AoE DPS spam character. You can't underestimate the result of Jing Yuan's AoE damage because it's actually quite nice to see a lot of numbers all over the place from Jing Yuan's attack.

KAFKA

(CURRENTLY NOT RELEASED)

If most characters act as direct DPS or Sub DPS or support characters, Kafka's role can act as a DOTer character. Right from the start, she will deliver a shock debuff to enemies that will deliver Lightning DoT or Damage over Time for 3 turns. One thing that makes Kafka unique is that every time your ally attacks enemies that got the shock debuff, Kafka will also do a follow up attack after that. But this passive can only be activated once per turn. Even though her kit revolves around DoT mechanics, you can also see how effective this DoT is in combat if you give her a chance.

SILVER WOLF

(CURRENTLY NOT RELEASED)

Like Kafka, Silver Wolf also appears as a DOTer character. But, instead of delivering a shock debuff, Silver Wolf instead delivered a confusing debuff, delaying the enemy's actions by 40%. If Kafka delivers a DoT to all enemies in his ultimate, the silver wolf will only attack one enemy. What makes Silver Wolf unique is her skill, which can impose a weakness on a random ally on a target enemy, making her a good sub-DPS debuffer. Either 10% attack reduction, 10% defense reduction, or 10% speed reduction, this is an important debuff that the Silver Wolf could apply to an opponent even from his normal attack. So you can even potentially have an infinite debuff loop on a single enemy.

SUSHANG

Fast Attack is a description that suits Sushan because her kit revolves around an RNG that will make her attack the enemy multiple times. Sushang is a single target physical DPS where her skill will deal high damage to one enemy and 2/<> chance to deal an additional physical attack to the enemy. What makes Sushang's set very useful is the fact that her end target will deal high physical damage to a single target, advance her own actions, so she basically has an extra turn and her chance to call an extra hit again is <> times . After activating her maximum, she will also receive an attack buff.

BAILU

A reliable healer that will heal not only one target ally, but also 2 other allies in 1 turn. With her Ultimate, which will heal all allies, she will also "revive" all your allies. When an enemy attacks an energetic ally, Bailu automatically heals them, which only triggers up to 2 times. But the real icing on the cake is Bailu's secret talent, which allows her to revive one character. This passive life and death can potentially help you survive a tough fight that is very important in a turn based game. Thus, Baylu also belongs to the S-tier rank due to her miraculous healing prowess and one-time rebirth.

YANQING

Yanqing is an icy five-star Hunt character who can use his own CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG on his own whenever he used his skills, and an even greater CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG when he cast his Ultimate. With another passive set where he will have a chance to make a follow up attack from either his own Basic ATK or Skill or Ultimate which will also potentially freeze the enemy. This way, Yanqing will not only deal a lot of damage to the enemy, he also has a chance to freeze them, which will be very useful especially if you are dealing with pesky enemies or bosses. Thanks to his self-rated CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG, you'll also have a good time crafting your relics and planar ornaments for Yanqing, especially don't worry too much about investing in CRIT Rate because his Ultimate lowkey almost guarantees him to always trigger a critical hit.

QINGCE

A new quantum four-star character that can change his single-target attack to an AoE attack if you can stack 4 identical tiles. The reason she's only in Tier B rank is because of her RNG tiles and her skill will only be able to switch one tile at a time and it doesn't guarantee you will get the tiles you wanted to AoE attack. Even though using her skills will increase her Base ATK, the Basic ATK damage itself is quite lackluster, but still bearable due to her four-star character rarity. So you really need to invest in a very strong Light Cone and Relics to let her shine.

TINGYUN

A lady with a silver tongue who will buff her ally's ATK based on her ATK and trade additional DMG based on the target ally's ATK percentage. But the bread and butter of the Tingyun set lies in her Ultimate, which will increase the target ally's energy by 50 and increase their attack damage. With this unique beneficial energy manipulation, you can use this advantage to the fullest, especially for your top DPS character like Seele, Dan Heng, Jing Yuan, Yanqing and many more who will deal massive attack damage from their Ultimate. This potentially makes them able to throw their Ultimate much more often than usual.

WELT

Welt is your slow debuffer with an imaginary element. With his skill that attacks a random target that has β…” chance to slow them down, and his ultimatum that attacks all enemies that imprisons them, delaying their actions by 41% and slowing their speed by 15%. In a turn-based game, slowing down enemies can have a significant impact because your team will have more turns compared to your enemies.

ASTA

Asta is the buffer for your ATK and SPD team. Her mastery deals "weak" fire damage to an enemy target and an additional 4 times to random target enemies, which will increase her stack for every single enemy hit. Her stack will increase the team's ATK, from 6% to 30%. Its final amount will boost all SPD allies by 45 over 2 turns. This buff is relatively good, but the Asta stack relies on RNG, so sometimes you will get a high ATK buff and other times it will be lower. So it's not very reliable to use the Asta role to buff your team's ATK.

CLARA

Clara acts as the punching bag on your team, literally. Her ultimate goal will be to taunt enemies, a higher chance for enemies to attack Clara instead of your other allies. With a damage reduction kit and an AoE physical attack on all enemies, Clara can act as your Sub-DPS tank. You need to put a lot of construction into it so that it can truly shine. And if you don't have a solid healer, Clara's ultimate goal can turn against you, as Clara doesn't have the skill to heal herself, only provoking enemies to attack her.

HERTA

Kuru Kuru! Every time an enemy's HP drops below 50%, Gert will inflict an AoE ice attack on all enemies. Unfortunately, this damage only deals 25% of Gert's attack, so the damage isn't all that significant. With AoE ice damage to all enemies both in her skill and ultimate, Gerta is a character that will attack entire enemies. Her damage is not that significant, even in the caliber of an AoE character. Thus, if you really want to use Gert, you really need to put strong relics into it.

NATASHA

A healer that can boost your early game progress because it can potentially prevent your team from dying. Natasha will heal one target from her mastery and heal all allies from her ultimate target. Once you make progress in the mid game where your team's attribute will have higher HP and you will encounter stronger enemies, Natasha's healing rate is actually quite weak, so it will be difficult to maintain your team's HP if you meet a strong enemy that can deal a lot of damage to your team. But for the early game it is very useful. This way, you can temporarily use it even when facing the boss in your main story.

MARCH 7

One of the key characters in Honkai: Star Rail besides Dan Heng and Trailblazer. With her mastery that will create a shield for an ally, an additional higher chance for an enemy to hit them if they have more than 30% HP, and her ultimate that does an AoE ice attack on enemies, March 7's shield could be a double-edged sword. Because if her shield is not strong enough and it really provoked the enemies to hit that ally, it could be a disadvantage for your team. The March 7th defense is relatively low in the early game progression, so the shield strength is not as ideal.

THE PASSENGER

Rating a Trailblazer's tier list is one of the hardest options because you can actually toggle a Trailblazer element and it will completely change their skill mechanics and eidolons. A great all-round attacker for their physical element, a great taunt, and a lot of AoE fire damage from their fire element, there are many factors that can give Trailblazer a higher or lower tier list.

ARLAN

Lightning's only DPS target is a character who will sacrifice their own HP in order to deal higher damage to the enemy. With 15% max HP drain every time Arlan used his skills rather than his current HP, this can be a big disadvantage if Arlan's HP starts to drop. Its final amount will deal large lightning damage to a single enemy and additional attacks to enemies adjacent to the target. His kit is relatively dim and he doesn't have the ability to heal himself. So you need to pair Arlan with a healer, which again requires more investment if you only have Natasha as your healer.

HOOK

Hook is your fire DOTer that will often apply a Burn DoT to a single enemy. This DoT chance is 100%, so it's guaranteed to burn a single enemy target using the Hook skill. The hook will also deal more damage to the target with DoT burn. Hook will deal a lot of fire damage to one enemy and increase Hook's skill so that he will strike a higher enemy and attack a nearby enemy this time. Unfortunately, while the DoT mechanic is indeed useful and reliable, the damage outcome is not as great as you might hope.

PELA

The ATK reduction for one enemy from her mastery and the AoE defense debuff from her ultimate, Pella's role shines, giving the debuff to enemies. Pela can't shine alone as her damage outcome is relatively low and Guard Break won't produce much if your DPS isn't able to deal high damage yet.

SAMPO

A key character who could have a significant impact on the development of the plot in the main story quest. His skill will deal wind damage to the target and he will randomly bounce off enemies up to four times, and his ultimate wind attack AoE on all enemies and an additional chance to increase DoT damage by 20% for two turns. With Sampo's passive having 65% to deliver the wind shear from his attack that inflicts Wind DoT on enemies, this DoT can stack up to five times. Unfortunately, the damage scale is relatively low, so this can be a disadvantage if you are planning on investing in a great Sampo build.

SERVAL

Shocking enemies are part of the Serval set. With his mastery that will deal lightning damage to the target enemy and an additional attack to enemies adjacent to the target, Serval has a 4/5 chance to apply a shock DoT to enemies. Unfortunately, her ultimate will deal lightning AoE damage to all enemies, but she will not be able to apply a shock DoT to them either, but only to extend the shock DoT on enemies for two turns. The reason this is unfortunate is because Serval's kit also relies on a shock DoT that was applied to enemies, because at the end of the turn, Serval will perform a follow-up attack that attacks all enemies that have a shock DoT. But then again, the damage multiplier is relatively low, so you really need to put in a lot of great build for her before she can really shine. Pairing her with characters that can shock like Kafka is a good idea.

Ways of Honkai Star

In Honkai Star Rail, each character has their own path. The path plays a role in determining what each character will do during the battle. Some act as Primary DPS, Sub DPS, Support, and many more.

Here are all seven paths that exist in Honkai Star Rail's current gameplay.

DESTRUCTION

Path of Destruction is a versatile character that will act as a damage dealer. The characters along the way are ArlanBladeClaraHook ΠΈ Pioneer.

HUNTING

You probably want to consider having at least one character hunting, because they are your only primary DPS target. They can do a lot of damage if you build them right. The characters along the way are Dan HengSeele ΠΈ Sushang.

ERUDITION

Unlike the Hunt, which only targets one enemy, Erudition is another DPS character that will deal damage AoE enemies. Characters along the way: HerthaHimekoJing Yuan ΠΈ Serval.

HARMONY

Instead of doing a lot of damage, Harmony acts as support for your team. This is a character that has a buff skill to help you in battle. The characters along the way are Asta ΠΈ Armor.

NIGILITY

Nihility opposite to the path of Harmony; they give debuffs to enemies instead of buffing your team. The characters along the way are KafkasangSampoSilver Wolf ΠΈ Welt.

PRESERVATION

If Destruction, Hunt, and Erudite succeed at dealing damage, then the pathT he saves succeeds in increasing Protection for your team. The characters along the way are Cheetah ΠΈ March 7.

Abundance

Abundance is the role of the healer. Probably the role you will use when facing stronger enemies. The characters along the way are Luocha ΠΈ Natasha.

Honkai Star Rail Level Ratings

Now that you know what each character's path in the game will do, here are the ranking explanations for the Honkai Star Rail tier list.

S rank

These characters are meta-defining!

A Rank

High level, with the best of the best characters. The most recommended characters that we will offer if there is a chance you can try to get them. Their role has the best kit that Honkai: Star Rail has to offer right now.

Rank B

High potential character with useful skills and roles for your team. Despite being 1 level lower than A Rank, they can still be a great character to help you progress in the game a lot.

Rank C

Characters that are still useful, but you'd like to consider switching them during mid-game progression. Even though they are B-ranked, these characters are still great and will definitely help you during the early game.

Grade D

D-tier ranks are characters that can be useful, but only after you invest heavily in them. This is generally not possible during the early game progression. And even with huge build investments, their kits or attributes are pretty lackluster. So you might want to consider replacing those characters instead of using them.

Honkai Star Rail Tier List Overview

And that's all we have for our Honkai Star Rail tier list for now. HoYoverse will likely release more playable characters in the future, and there may be some character changes to balance the gameplay. When this happens, we will update the Honkai Star Rail tier list with up-to-date meta ratings and latest characters.

Of course, regardless of the Honkai Star Rail tier list, you can still promote a game event with C-tier characters instead of S-tier characters. But having an S-tier unit will definitely help you develop your game faster. As such, we recommend that you aim to get S-tier characters, or at least A-tier characters, to make your game easier to play through. Ultimately, go with the characters you like the most, because the most important thing is that you enjoy what you do.
