"House of the Dragon" Game of Thrones Continuation - Release Date, Plot, Actors, etc.

Game of Thrones may have been one of the biggest TV shows of the 21st century, and the prequel titled House of the Dragon looks set to take the world by storm again.

Despite a controversial final season, Game of Thrones has achieved more success than many TV shows could ever dream of. The series had (and still has) universal appeal and a die-hard fan base thanks to its evocative and action-packed plot.

The House of the Dragon travels back in time in the GoT universe, looking back at Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms centuries before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. Here's everything we know about the upcoming spin-off series.

When will the sequel to Game of Thrones be released?

After the not-so-successful finale of the Game of Thrones series, HBO decided not to say goodbye to the world of Westeros. Moreover, together with the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, George Martin, the studio intends to expand the fantasy universe. Now five projects are at different stages of development, which will once again immerse viewers in the world of political intrigues, dragons and epic battles. One such project is House of the Dragon, which was greenlit by HBO back in October 2019, just months after Game of Thrones reached its finale.

Since this was relatively recent - and with the ongoing global health crisis holding back television and film production around the world - we still don't have a specific release date for House of the Dragon.

However, we do know that the show is due to arrive in 2022, which while that seems like a pretty long wait, seems very reasonable considering how much to invest in a series of this magnitude.

Why will there be a prequel and not a sequel?

Often, after a sensational film or series, producers take on a sequel (events that happened after the end of the original work).

But since the final season of Game of Thrones ended fairly straightforward, with no hint of an open ending, HBO decided to focus on the past rather than the future. Moreover, George Martin has several unfilmed books that you can rely on when filming the prequel (the events that happened to the end of the original work).

Therefore, back in 2017, HBO launched several possible continuations of the Game of Thrones into development at once. One of them, The Long Night, even got a pilot episode (which neither George Martin nor HBO liked), but only The House of the Dragon got the green light for a full first season.

The plot of the House of the Dragon

The House of Dragons dates back 300 years before the events we've seen throughout Game of Thrones, with a focus on the ancestral dragon lords of Daenerys Targaryen and "the beginning of the end for the once all-powerful dynasty that dominated the Seven Kingdoms."

We don't know much about the names of the characters involved, though we're expecting some names that may be familiar to diehard Game of Thrones fans. However, we know three characters:

  • Rhaenyra Targaryen
  • Alicent Hightower
  • Demon Targaryen

The emphasis is on the rise of the powerful Targaryen dynasty (from which Daenerys and Jon Snow came) and on the civil war called the "Dance of the Dragons" (a clash between two branches of the Targaryen house that could not share the Iron Throne).

HBO Max content director Casey Bloys said that filming the prequel was made possible by the features and variability of the fantasy world created by George Martin:

“So, one of the great things about House of the Dragon is that it’s an established story that takes you to Game of Thrones. There are many possibilities and ways to tell it."

In addition, the creators of the series promise that viewers will again see large-scale battles and dragons.

Although several commercials have appeared, there are no official trailers from HBO or the Game of Thrones team yet.

Who is creating the series and who is in the lead roles

The showrunners are Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik (who will also direct the pilot). The producers of the project, in addition to George Martin, were Vince Gerardis and Sarah Hess. In addition to Miguel Sapochnik, the director's chairs will include Claire Kilner (Rental Groom, Sneaky Pete), Geeta Patel (Atypical, Goodbye Forever) and Greg Yaitans (House M.D., Getaway).

Eight famous actors were approved for the main roles:

  • Viserys Targaryen will be played by Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum);
  • Damon Targaryen - Matt Smith (star of the series "Crown" and "Doctor Who");
  • Alicent Hightower - Olivia Cooke ("Ready Player One");
  • Rayneer Targaryen - Emma D'Arcy ("Seekers of Truth");
  • Princess Reynis Velerion - Yves Best ("The King Speaks!");
  • Otto Hightower - Rhys Ifans ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows");
  • Misaria - Sonoya Mizuno ("La La Land");
  • Lord Corlis Velerion - Steve Toussaint ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time").

Ramin Djawadi, who previously wrote music for Game of Thrones and Westworld, will be the main composer of the House of the Dragon series.

As of yet, there are no confirmed actors for House of the Dragon. Of course, fans have their own ideas about who they want to see on the show, but we might have to wait a bit to find out.

As of September 20, it has been confirmed that casting for the show is officially underway, so hopefully we'll find out who's participating sooner or later.

How many episodes will there be and when will the series "House of the Dragon" come out

Full filming began in April 2021. The first season of the series will consist of 10 episodes, each lasting approximately 60 minutes. House of the Dragon is expected to release in 2022 and air on HBO Max.

Will there be any more sequels to Game of Thrones?

At the moment, it is known that HBO has five projects in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe in development, including the House of the Dragon. The remaining four:

  • "Tales of Dunk and Egg" - about the knight Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who later became King Aegon V Targaryen;
  • "Nine Journeys" - about the expeditions of the navigator Corlis Velarion, who, by the way, will be one of the key characters in the "House of the Dragon";
  • "Flea Bottom" - about life in the slums of King's Landing;
  • "Ten Thousand Ships" is about the warrior and queen of the Rhoynar Nymeria.

So, that's everything we know about the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. It's not a big deal, but as casting and production gets underway, expect a lot more news to come in the coming weeks.

Before you know it, the show will premiere, but until then, keep tabs on this page for the biggest updates and changes coming to the House of the Dragon.
