iPhone 12: Release Date, Price, News, Leaks and Everything You Need to Know

phone

On this page, we have collected many leaks about the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

The release date may not be the only big change, as this is the first time we're expecting four new iPhone models to debut in one go. Current leaks suggest they will include two cheaper models - the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max - and two more expensive versions in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 series is also expected to see the biggest design changes since the iPhone X ditched the home button and introduced the notch back in 2017. Apple's next flagships are expected to look similar to the iPhone 5, with a boxier design that's adorned with a metal frame... or at least that's what the leaks told us.

We already have a good idea of what to expect from the iPhone 12 series. Everything from pricing to design, key specs, camera details and more has been leaked, so below we can give you a clear idea of what may happen in the next iPhone.

We're also keeping this article up to date with all the latest iPhone 12 leaks and rumors, so be sure to check back regularly for the latest news with Apple's next flagship.

iPhone 12: in pursuit

  • What is this? Apple's New Range of iPhone Products
  • When will it come out? Maybe September but might be delayed
  • How much is it? We expect a price of $649 / £700 / AU $1200 and up

RELEASE DATE

When is the iPhone 12 coming out?

An exact release date for the iPhone 12 hasn't been announced yet, but we're pretty sure Apple will introduce a new iPhone by the end of 2020.

Probably in September 2020, Apple will introduce the iPhone 12, and this is usually around the second week of the month. This almost always happens on a Tuesday, so we bet on the 8th or 15th of September.

We usually predict you'll be able to pick it up 10 days after that, so you might need a Friday off if you're desperate to get it. However, we can't be as sure of these dates as we usually do because there is a possibility that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the production of the next iPhone could make adjustments.

But there are reports elsewhere that the phone will be delayed until October or November, and Apple apparently didn't even finalize the design at the end of March 2020.

The latest release date from the leaks says November, most likely, but we can see that the phone is open in advance. The chief executive of Broadcom (which is expected to supply components for the iPhone 12) also suggested that a delay is likely, while one report in The Wall Street Journal also suggested that the production of the iPhone 12 was delayed by about a month.

Some sources even say it could happen in 2021, with Reuters also claiming a delay is likely.

So what will happen? No one knows for sure yet, but there is a good chance that the release date of the iPhone 12 could be shifted depending on the model. This is said by respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says that it will most likely be larger phone models that will appear later than September.

phone

If production is delayed, we may still see Apple introduce the iPhone in September, but it may not arrive immediately after its release, as it has in previous years.

What will be the price of the iPhone 12?

The price of the iPhone 12 is more clear from the leaks than the release date. It will likely be broadly in line with the 2019 iPhone lineup.

iPhone 11 is $699 / £729 / AU$1199, iPhone 11 Pro is $999 / £1 / $049 and iPhone 1749 Pro Max is $11 / 1 £099 / $1

This is confirmed by the rumors as well, and one big leak from YouTuber and prolific insider Jon Prosser has shared how much he thinks the phones will cost in the US. That's according to a source close to Apple, and we've put it in the handy chart below:

iPhone 12 price leak
model128GB256GB512GB
iPhone 12$ 649$ 749No versions
iPhone 12 Max$ 749$ 849No versions
iPhone 12 Pro$ 999$ 1099$ 1299
iPhone 12 Pro Max$ 1099$ 1199$ 1399

There is no exact pricing information for Russia, but it seems to be pretty much in line with the iPhone 11 series, with the cheapest model this year a bit smaller for the iPhone 12.

Having said all that, one previous report suggested that the cost of materials for the iPhone 12 could go up, which could mean even higher retail prices. We won't know for sure until Apple announces it on stage.

And no matter how much the iPhone 12 range costs, you can, in one case, get less for your money, as rumor has it that Apple won't ship free EarPods with them. We don't expect Apple to add a pair of free AirPods to make up for this loss.

Design

What will the iPhone 12 look like?

So far, the leaks suggest that the design of the iPhone 12 will look very different from the last few devices. It will most likely take elements we've seen on previous iPhone models and use them here. Remember iPhone 4? You may recognize some items.

First, you will have four sizes to choose from. According to the latest model information, will be below:

  • iPhone 12 with 5,4-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Max with 6,1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro with 6,1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6,7-inch display

This offers a larger screen size for those who don't want to spend a lot of money on an iPhone 12 Pro model, and essentially means you'll have a choice of two devices, both of which are pricey.

Jon Prosser, a Twitter leader who has proven he has the right information about the iPhone SE and MacBook Pro 13, shared the following infographic, which you can see below:

View picture on Twitter

Consecutive leaks suggest that the iPhone 12 will have a metal frame, and the most reliable source was Apple analyst Ming-Ch Kuo. The backs of all four phones are still expected to be made of glass, but the edges are expected to be more boxy than on current models.

Prosser's information suggests that the iPhone 12 will use aluminum, while the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will come with a stainless steel case.

Some sources inside Bloomberg claim they are similar, and they compare the design of the iPad Pro, claiming that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have flat stainless steel edges, sharper rounded corners, and flatter screens.

The above reports also point to smaller notches on all four hearing models, something we've been hearing about consistently since the new Face ID technology first appeared in October 2019.

You should still expect a notch at the top of the phone's display, but it looks like it will be much smaller than before without being drastically different from previous models.

According to analysts, one of the future phones may not even have a notch, since the front camera could potentially be built under the screen. If it does, we expect it to be the most expensive iPhone 12 model with this feature - most likely the iPhone 12 Pro Max or whatever it launches.

One report also states that Face ID will be dropped entirely in favor of an under-screen fingerprint scanner, although this seems unlikely.

This would be a big change for the brand as current models don't have a fingerprint scanner at all. However, if the camera is indeed on the screen, then it becomes impossible to have all the Face ID sensors, so it's likely that this fingerprint reader will replace Face ID, although we're not sure if Apple will go that far.

Will the iPhone 12 be waterproof? We currently expect Apple to keep its IP68 water and dust resistance rating for the iPhone 12, which means it will be able to submerge in water but not be fully waterproof.

COLORS

What colors will the iPhone 12 come in?

As for the colors of the iPhone 12, we've heard a rumor that Apple will introduce navy blue on its top models. Reports say that the Midnight Green color that debuted on the iPhone 11 Pro sold above Apple's expectations, so they may decide to keep it or replace it in the lineup with this dark blue hue.

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max were available in Space Grey, Silver and Gold along with Midnight Green. These hues may remain for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, but we haven't received any conclusive evidence yet that these colors will return.

As for the standard iPhone 12, we expect the pastel range to be similar to the iPhone 11. This phone is available in black, green, yellow, purple, red, and white, so you're probably expecting some of those colors to return by 2020

DISPLAY

Will the iPhone 12 be 120Hz?

We've touched on the display just above and four different models to expect in 2020, but here we're going to dive into the screen technology rumors.

Ming-Chi Kuo also said that all iPhone 12 models could feature OLED screen technology for the first time. We've heard this claim over and over again, and Prosser's source also confirmed the same.

However, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max displays are expected to be made by BOE, while Samsung will make OLED technology on the top two models.

The iPhone 11 features an LCD display while the iPhone 11 Pro uses OLED technology. This could allow for a much stronger screen on standard iPhone 12 models, though we don't have firm details about the resolution you can expect from any of the phone's four displays yet.

New iPhone 12

iPhone 11 Pro

Another source revealed that the two Pro models will use an OLED form that will be thinner and cheaper to manufacture than the screens used in the iPhone 11 Pro line. This may mean lower prices, but we won't count on it.

Another notable change for the 2020 iPhone display is the move to a 120Hz refresh rate. Current iPhones - and many other smartphones - have a 60Hz refresh rate, so bumping up to 120Hz speeds up screen reloads and provides a smoother experience when scrolling through social media feeds or games.

Max Weinbach shared some leaked information about the iPhone 12 Pro that suggested that it was the model that would get improved screen technology. Prosser has since suggested that the technology will also come to the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

We've heard this statement before, and some phones already have higher refresh rates than 60Hz, as do some iPads, so it's unbelievable. This is especially true as top phones like the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro now support the technology as well.

All this said, the source who provides the information to Prosser said that Apple might be "nervous" with the technology. This may mean that there are limits to the 120Hz refresh rate, which could be due to the battery life of mobile phones.

We've also heard that at least some iPhone 12 models could have thinner, cheaper, and more power-efficient screens than the iPhone 11 lineup. This, in turn, could allow the phones themselves to be thinner, as well as last longer between charges. .

5G

Will the iPhone 12 be 5G ready?

Another big change could take the form of 5G, which is widely rumored for the iPhone 12, as many of its competitors are now using the technology. Back in July 2019, Kuo predicted that all models would support 5G.

At the time, we expected the feature to only come to one model in the iPhone 12 range, but now it looks like it will be on all four devices. Prosser offered as much in his specifications as he learned from an Apple source.

The big caveat is that base iPhone 12 models may not support mmWave 5G technology. This is expected to be a feature reserved for the top two models, so those running carriers like Verizon in the US will have to opt for them.

And yet, another early leak that revealed 3D printed models of all four iPhones suggests that all four SIM slots have been moved from the right side to the left, with the source saying they were moved to make room for the 5G antennas. — even in two cheaper models.

SPECULATIONS

What other iPhone 12 specs should we expect?

How do these phones perform on 5G? One rumor suggests it will have a custom-made 5G antenna along with a 5nm A14 Bionic processor.

For the average consumer, this means the iPhone has longer battery life and more power than ever. That would be pretty impressive considering the iPhone's battery life is currently the best we've ever seen from Apple.

RAM could also increase as analysts claim the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have 6GB, up from 4GB compared to their predecessors, although the standard iPhone 12 will obviously use 4GB. This is something we have now heard over and over again, so it could very well be true.

The chipset seems poised for a surprise too, as the leaked A14 Bionic benchmark showed it to have a single-core and multi-core score that outpaced the Snapdragon 865, the processor we've seen in almost every Android flagship in 2020.

In addition, the iPhone 12 may also support the new 802.11ay specification, which will allow it to share content at at least 20-30Gbps. So for all intents and purposes, this phone is likely to be fast.

New iPhone 12

iPhone 11 from 2019

How much memory will you have? You may have seen earlier on this page, but Prosser's pricing leak showed us that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will come in 128GB and 256GB models, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will come in both. and 512 GB.

Battery capacity is currently unknown for the iPhone 12 line. One rumor in late 2019 suggested that Apple could use a smaller battery protection module for the iPhone 12, allowing it to pack it into a larger cell.

Whether this happens or not is currently unknown, and we may not even know until someone manages to get him to figure out the exact innards of the new iPhone.

Will the iPhone 12 use USB-C? Rumors currently suggest that he will stick with the Lightning cable. Many sources claim that USB-C is not going to happen, as the iPhone 12 will likely stay with Lightning and the iPhone 13 will potentially switch to a portless design.

However, the recent EU regulation could also mean future iPhones won't be able to use Lightning cables in Europe. This could force Apple to switch the connector on future phones to USB-C, and while it's not yet clear if this will be the case for the iPhone 12, it might be worth considering.

Another report from the Chinese publication Caifa news also states that Apple and other manufacturers may soon use GaN power adapters. They are currently used by Xiaomi and provide fast charging up to 65W.

There's no guarantee this will debut on the iPhone 12 - or any future iPhone for that matter - but it could mean we'll see an improved fast charging experience along the line.

CAMERA

Will the iPhone 12 camera be significantly improved?

The camera may be one area where the new iPhone excels, and the main change is likely to be the addition of a LiDAR scanner, as we saw on the 2020 iPad Pro. It can accurately judge distances and therefore depth, and will improve augmented reality and portrait mode.

We've heard specific mentions of a LiDAR scanner included in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (along with three lenses), while the base iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max are said to have two cameras and no LiDAR scanner. . These claims have been made by multiple sources, and the image below shows what it might look like on the iPhone 12 Pro (made by Phone Arena).

We've also seen a leaked sketch supposedly showing the four rear lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro. This sketch is believed to be from an iOS 14 build and is supported by many sources.

Three of the lenses look the same as on the iPhone 11 Pro, albeit a little bigger, but the new fourth lens looks like the LiDAR scanner found on the 2020 iPad Pro, confirming other claims about such a lens.

New iPhone 12

Before all the LiDAR scanner rumors, we heard that a laser-powered 3D camera was rumored to be included. It will be located at the back, and although only one rumor mentions lasers, another also says that they are shooting depth, and one mentions three-dimensional sounding.

Another report by Fast Company cites sources close to the phone's production and also states that a 3D camera on the back is in development. One source for this rumor claims that the top two models will get this along with a three-lens camera, while the bottom two models will get a two-lens camera without 3D sensing.

This all sounds in the same vein as the LiDAR scanner we're now expecting, so this is one of the more likely features.

Elsewhere, one source says the iPhone 12 could have a 64MP primary camera, up from the 12MP one in previous versions, which would be a huge upgrade. This leak also suggests that the phone will have multiple lenses that support night mode shooting, and the ultra-wide shot may have a dedicated macro mode.

We've also heard that the top-end iPhone 12 (likely the iPhone 12 Pro Max) will get a new image stabilization technology called "sensor shift" that will allow the sensor to move to counter camera shake.

Additionally, authoritative speaker Max Weinbach says he's heard that the iPhone 12 Pro will feature Smart HDR to improve low-light performance. This is along with a 3x optical zoom, which is more than the 2x zoom featured in the iPhone 11 lineup.

And we've also heard that all four iPhone 12 models could get a camera upgrade in the form of a 7-element wide-angle lens. This is one more element than current models, which can result in less aberrations and reduced distortion.

While there are plenty of sources collaborating with the LiDAR scanner rumors, the actual key specs of the iPhone 12 series cameras are still a little unclear, and we still have a lot to learn here in the coming months.

What do we want to see the iPhone 12 camera do? Mark Wilson, camera editor at TechRadar, says...

“The cameras on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro have given us some great new shooting experiences, but what I really want to see on the iPhone 12 is Apple upscaling those ultra-wide and telephoto lenses.”

“Both of them have smaller sensors and slower apertures than the main camera and can struggle in low light. It would be great to see a night mode available in all shooting situations, as well as a brighter lens on an ultra-wide lens with optical image stabilization.

"I would also like to see Apple adopt the periscope lens design we've seen from Samsung, Huawei and Oppo for increased optical zoom, although we may have to wait a little longer."

SOFTWARE

What will iOS 14 bring to the iPhone 12?

Apple's big software developer conference is due to start on June 22nd. It's called WWDC 2020, and it's expected to be the event where we first hear about iOS 14, which will likely debut on the new iPhone.

It may also be coming to your existing phone, but the iPhone 12 will be where it came from and it will most likely get a few major updates over iOS 13.

However, little is known about iOS 14 yet. There are rumors of a new fitness app for iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV that will let you watch fitness videos on your phone.

iMessage is also rumored to be getting some updates, with the ability to tag people - with an @ sign, as you can do on other messaging platforms like Slack - as well as a way to delete your messages after they've been sent.

ACCESSORIES

Will the iPhone 12 come with AirPods?

The short answer to the above question is: no. It's unlikely that Apple will put a pair of AirPods in the box with the new iPhone, as they are the company's main source of revenue when sold separately.

Apple may decide to go public with the AirPods 3 rumor along with the new phone at its event, but there are rumors that the company won't include in-ear headphones with the iPhone 12 this year either.

This could mean you won't get any headphones bundled with the iPhone 12. This is all just a rumor for now, but it also means the company may not bundle any accessories with its iPhones since it dropped the adapter 3,5. 2018 mm on Lightning. in XNUMX.
