Changes to mob spawning in Minecraft 1.18: everything you need to know
Constant Minecraft content updates regularly tweak the mechanics of the game, and the latest 1.18 update brings a few changes to how some mobs behave in the world, look, and even how and where they spawn.
With the Minecraft 1.18 update, spawning mechanics for many hostile and non-hostile mobs are being adjusted. The changes are not huge, but they do change the locations where players can expect to find a lot of mobs in the future.
With that in mind, it's worth looking at all the changes currently implemented for the mob to appear in version 1.18, even if they end up being changed again in future content updates.
Minecraft: Full list of changes to mob spawn locations
In general, about ten changes were made to the mechanics of mob spawning in Minecraft 1.18. Some of these changes are specific to mobs, while others relate to how all mobs spawn. Most of the changes are related to where mobs can spawn and what blocks they are allowed to spawn on. As stated earlier, the changes are by no means massive, but they will be noticeable fairly quickly to Minecraft veterans.
Below players can find a list of spawning changes that have been implemented for mobs in Minecraft 1.18:
- Axolotls can now only spawn in water above clay blocks in lush cave biomes.
- Cod, dolphins, igus, salmon, squid, and tropical fish will only spawn in water between altitude levels Y=50 and Y=64. However, these creatures can spawn in the lush water of cave biomes at any altitude.
- Drowned zombies can now spawn in drip cave biomes and warm ocean biomes.
- Rogues can now spawn on snow blocks.
- Foxes can now spawn on snow and rough earthen blocks.
- Glowing squids now only spawn in water blocks below Y=30 elevation.
- Goats can now only spawn in snowy slopes, jagged peaks, and snowy peaks of mountain biomes.
- Rabbits can now spawn on snow blocks.
- Wolves can now spawn on snow blocks.
- Hostile mobs now only spawn in areas where the light block level is zero.
As stated, most of the changes in Minecraft adjust the spawning of mobs in snowy areas. However, the behavior of axolotls and goats is now much more limited. This may make them easier to spot for players who know where to find them, although they won't be as widely available as they were in Minecraft 1.17.
