JPG Picture Of Artist Beeple Sold For $69 Million
Auction house Christie's sold "Everydays: The First 5000 Days" by artist Mike Winkelmann aka Beeple for $69,3 million in non-fungible token (NFT), according to the website of the auction house. This is a record price for NFTs.
The painting is a JPG collage compiled from the artist's first five thousand works, which he has published daily since 2007. Most interestingly, the work was sold as a non-fungible token (NFT). This is a type of digital asset that is stored on the blockchain and confirms that its owner owns this digital object.
Как сообщает The New York Times, the auction ran for two weeks, bidding began at a starting price of $100. In the last few seconds of trading, a lot of bids were received, which is why the auction was extended by two minutes.
The value of a Beeple was the third highest auction price for a work by a living artist, after Jeff Koons ($91,1 million) and David Hockney ($90,3 million).
The price of a Beeple digital artwork has surpassed the cost of many physical paintings by artists such as Eugene Delacroix, Marcel Duchamp and Francisco Goya, the NYT notes.
Everydays: The First 5000 Days is the first NFT work sold by Christieʼs in its 255-year history. During the auction, the auction house for the first time accepted the Ethereum cryptocurrency for payment.
