How to Change the Weather in Pokemon Sword and Shield
Our guide to setting the weather in Pokemon Sword and Shield will help you figure out how to do it, what the symbols mean, and how to deal with rain, thunder, and various other natural phenomena that can occur in the game! This is mostly important for wild areas because it has a big impact on which Pokémon will spawn! We fully explore this mechanic and teach you everything you need to know about it.
HOW TO CHANGE THE WEATHER
In reality, you cannot specifically change the weather in the wilderness in the game itself. It is random and seems to be determined by the date and time on your Nintendo. However, the weather can vary greatly in different places of different landmarks throughout the wilderness. If you didn't know, there are many different parts of this huge open area of the world. You will see at the bottom of the screen when you enter a new one. One of these areas may have dramatically different weather than the other at the same time.
While you can't change the weather in the game itself, you can do so by playing around with your settings:
HOW TO GET SPECIFIC WEATHER: FOG, SANDSTORM, BLOWING!
It has now been revealed that you can select specific weather in the game if you set the date to a specific time!
To set the date on your Nintendo Switch, be sure to close your Pokemon game and go to System Preferences > System > Date & Time. Clear the checkbox to synchronize clocks over the Internet. Then go to date and time and set it to your desired weather option based on the dates below.
You can do this at any point in history (dates in US format):
- It's clear: 5/1/2020
- Sunny: 7/1/2020
- Cloudy: 3/1/2020
- It is rainy: 10/1/2020
- Thunderstorm: 11/1/2020
- Snow: 12/1/2020
For sandstorm and snowstorm, you will need to be at least halfway through the game. To unlock the fog, you will need to complete the story!
- Blizzard: 2/1/2020
- Sandstorm
: 4/1/2020 - Fog: 6/1/2020
Once you have set the date, go ahead and open the game again. If you did everything right, all wild areas will be covered by the weather set to that particular type!
CHECKING THE WEATHER
If you want to know what the weather is like in a particular area, you can go to the map and press the + key to turn the weather on and off!
WEATHER SYMBOLS
Here's a quick look at what each weather symbol means. Fog and sandstorms seem to be the rarest.
POKÉMON SPRINGING VARY DURING CERTAIN WEATHER
There are some Pokémon that spawn much more often when there is a certain type of weather. Fog seems to be one of the hardest to spawn, and some interesting Pokémon come out during this type of weather. This means that if you see fog at a location on your map, you'll probably want to drop everything and go there to see what kind of character is hiding there!
WEATHER IN BATTLES AND CAMP
If your Pokémon's favorable weather continues when you enter battle, it increases your damage! There are some Pokémon that can have moves that will change the weather, which can then increase your ability to deal damage.
Pokémon are happier at camp in favorable weather
If you're heading to your camp during a certain weather, the Pokémon with that favorable weather type will be happier!
