Volume I

Prologue: Chronicles of Inazuma - Tanuki

It is said that in the past, when fragile and short-lived mortals had not yet crossed the sea and reached these lands, Inazuma was the land of tanuki.
Born lazy and changeable, tanuki not only never worry about the coming day, but they don't put off problems for tomorrow either. In those days, the lands of Inazuma were a cozy paradise for tanuki, and every day was a noisy holiday.

At least that's what the tanuki elders always said.

Later, kitsune came by sea and forced the tanuki to start a great war that lasted for many generations. Only when both sides suffered heavy losses did peace negotiations begin. The tanuki were stubborn and did not want to give in, but still they were forced to cut off a part of the Thunder Sakura and bestow it on a kitsune as a sign of peace.

But kitsune were also cunning and changeable. It is said that in the ever-changing battles of the great war between kitsune and tanuki, many unfortunate souls were fooled by their unpredictable nature and no longer remembered who they were or where they came from.

And so from the confused monsters began to be born mortals.

This story was told to me by a boastful tengu.

Volume II

History of Yoichi

A tengu named Yoichi lives in Hanamizaka on Toki Street. She rents a liquor store and spends her days in idleness.

Well, idleness entails optimism. Although, in truth, the word “chaos” would have characterized her life more accurately.

Theoretically, if you sell alcohol, you need to understand it at least a little. The same goes for monsters.
To be honest, Yoichi has a terrible taste for alcohol. And she doesn't know how to do business either. But that's half the trouble. During her hermitage, she never got rid of her terrible tengu habits, namely: provoke quarrels between monsters, kidnap mortal children, or walk all night long, making an incredible noise. She also likes to break into the theater, completely spitting on the atmosphere of the performance, and even sometimes jumps out onto the stage to beat the main character.
If not for her high status among the monsters and her many connections, Yoichi would most likely have been forced to retire and settle somewhere at the foot of the mountain a long time ago.
But the monsters and mortals who live on Toki Street perceive her differently. Even the high authorities do not pay the slightest attention to her, since she has never caused serious trouble.

Naturally arrogant and sleazy, like the greatest monster (by her own statement), when it comes to owning property, Yoichi is not tight-fisted. Any money she gets her hands on, she spends on liquor or novels from Yae's publishing house. And even these novels quickly fly through the window, as soon as she has time to read them halfway through. As a result, her house resembles bedlam.

Simply put, Yoichi does not have any possessions that she would treasure, except perhaps for a golden paper fan, which she always wears in her belt.

Tengu are monsters that have seen countless worlds. Therefore, it is not surprising that they love to tell stories about the trophies adorning their bodies. Just such a case is this paper fan.
Once on a moonlit night, a drunk Yoichi, shirt open, boasted to me about the history of this fan ...

She said that in one of the many worlds she had visited, she took the form of an arrogant young archer who served an equally arrogant shogun. Under the command of the shogun, she (or rather, he) hit countless enemies with her arrows, among whom came across both pot-bellied samurai and tanuki dressed as dexterous ninjas. And even overweight jikininki fell dead, struck down by a single arrow from Yoichi's bow.

— Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! You really are a great soldier! Your vision is as sharp as lightning, just like a tengu!
In those days, the vain shogun was carefree and laughed as loud as he wanted - and it looked completely unsightly.
Subsequently, Yoichi rendered many services to the shogun by killing monsters and unfortunate mortals. It goes without saying that some of these exploits she simply invented. But she became famous thanks to the decisive battle in the world where she spent a hundred years.

In that naval battle, the shogun and the rebels stood face to face in the strait and created a bloody storm. There were millions of monsters and tens of millions of mortal samurai. In that battle, 800 thousand ships sank, to say nothing of losses in manpower. Yoichi personally calculated all these mind-boggling numbers. Of course, not without my help.

As in countless similar stories of armies clashing head-on, heroes on both sides cut through the enemy lines like grass, and the sea water turned red with blood. And the malevolent shoguns could not restrain their uncontrollable laughter and did not want to return home to get a good night's sleep.

Finally, on a cold moonlit night, a small boat emerged from the enemy ranks. On board it stood a lone figure, like a reflection in the water. Beside the figure was a shining flagstaff, at the top of which was attached a paper fan that gleamed gold in the moonlight.

“Damn… Unheard of impudence!!! How can such a blatant provocation be tolerated?!
The shogun narrowed his eyes, trying to see the golden fan from a distance, and literally exploded with rage.

Yoichi couldn't understand why the shogun's feelings were so easily hurt, but she was too lazy to understand the cheap pride of mortals. At that moment, she (or rather, he) tried to see the figure in the boat with her tengu's sharp eyesight.

Yoichi saw a woman unlike anyone she had ever met.

A moment later, a lone arrow whistled over the moon, piercing the night sky.

- Haha, great!
And soon the joyful cry of the shogun was drowned in the enthusiastic roar of his army.

“If these two ancient warriors knew what they had lost, they would surely explode with rage!”
Yoichi grinned drunkenly. The tengu's face took on a frankly voluptuous expression, which made her look even more disgusting.

It turned out that at the very moment when the arrow was still flying in the air, Yoichi had already spread her wings, hovering over the strait. Flying over the boat, she grabbed a golden paper fan and a beauty. Rushing in the wind, Yoichi knocked over the screaming shogun and fled the battlefield.
“Perfect kidnapping by tengu.
What a pity that…"
But do you know what happened next? She scratched me terribly...
Yoichi sticks out his tongue and sighs bitterly.

“Alright, it’s snapper season now!” You should take at least a few fish with you.
— Hmm? Does a tight-fisted tengu like you have a heart?
I was talking about that woman!
Under the menacing gaze of the tengu, I had no choice but to scoop up the remaining snappers and make a hasty retreat.

History of Osen

There is another narrow street up the winding path from Yoichi's house. On it stands the house of an old woman.
When the night is pitch black and the moon rises to its zenith, the tanuki awaken from their sleep.
It is said that tanuki who have lived to be a hundred or a thousand years old are able to assume the form of a young girl, hilariously playing tricks on people or stalking innocent travelers - all because of some kind of vindictive malice. But here mortals are mistaken.
Bakeneko take on the appearance of a young girl only when they are angry. Most of the time, they prefer to be in the form of an old person, mostly because it suits their calculating and perverted nature. In addition, this disguise allows them to evoke compassion in passers-by.

- Hey, it's not free!
Raising her head at the sound of the voice, the girl waits on the ledge for some time. Her face is hidden in shadow, and only a faint smile and green-gold sparks in her eyes can be seen. The moonlight penetrates through her dress, highlighting her half-naked shoulders, and carelessly gets lost somewhere under the hem, framing the porcelain outlines of her thin, long legs. She carelessly twirls a jade sword in her hand and looks aloof.

The old woman is definitely angry...

You are late again today.
“Yes, s-sorry.

Mosquitoes fight against a paper lamp, which blinks lazily in response.
The moon brings a damp wind that drowns out the chirping of the cicadas.

Her hair falls over her shoulders. With a strange smile, the girl shakes the spinning wheel, and it gets on her nerves.
“As a tanuki, I may be on friendly terms with the tengu, but even I have to pay tribute to the incomprehensible bakeneko. In short, for your recent insolence, you should already be on your knees, asking for forgiveness.

- OK OK. Since the snapper is still fresh, you can get up first.
“In the form of a tanuki, it is difficult for me to return to a sitting position. The young girl slowly turned into an old woman with a kind but strange smile on her face.
Thank you, Auntie Sen.
"Call me Osen!"

- It was so easy.
But for some reason it still felt weird.

— Ha-ha-ha-ha! Speaking of which, how's that fool doing?
*Serb* Osen swallowed the fish whole, including the tail.

As for how her fate crossed paths with the tengu, this story cannot be told without irony. Yoichi has already told this story from her point of view, but in the mouth of the bakeneko, it appears in a completely different light.

Osen was not born in our world, but where mortals were much more cruel.
One night in a bamboo forest, young Osen was caught by a wandering monk and then sold to the shogun as bakeneko.
She did not retain memories of those days, she only wondered why powerful people from the mortal world had annoyed her and played with her all the time. Every day she had to tear enemies to pieces with her claws or play boring games that were interesting only to these people themselves.
Those long days drove her to a frenzy, but still they flew by quickly - after all, the monsters lived longer and were much more patient than mortals.

Later, when the shogun's war with the rebels began, Osen turned into a ninja.

This part of the story is even more boring...
At these words, Osen closes his eyes and yawns widely, stretching his mouth to the very ears.

“Then, during a night battle at sea, the shogun came up with a brilliant combination…”
The shogun ordered Osen to transform into a beautiful woman, to stand on a boat with a golden fan, in order to humiliate the rebels so that they would not dare to approach. But even if they did decide to do so, the bakeneko would teach them a harsh lesson.

And only later Yoichi ...
“It wasn’t until later that the bum suddenly stood up, declaring that she was capable of knocking down a fan with a single shot.
And then this tengu...
“… slipped and flopped into the water.
The old woman could not help laughing.

“That night she was so drunk that it seemed to her that the sea was stormy. But the moon was still and there was not a breeze.
In several hundred years, I have not met anyone so funny. So I saved her from humiliation and, barely holding back laughter, I myself knocked down a paper fan ... And then a joyful roar came from the ships. When I think about it, every time I smile to myself ... "

And then the tengu spread its wings and soared into the air, like a cloud covering the moon, and dived down to the beautiful woman ...
“Suddenly she lost control and looked more like a porcupine than a tengu and fell into the sea again. I couldn't pretend anymore and started laughing non-stop.
Then Osen, laughing, pulled the unfortunate tengu out of the sea. Holding her hands, she continued to laugh, flying between the ships of the opposing sides and unbalancing the shoguns.
She is said to have circled eight ships in the blink of an eye and then disappeared into the night. And her laughter was heard for three more days after the battle ended.

I couldn't help laughing, and then I grabbed her tighter. Thinking about the predicament she was in, the tighter I squeezed her, the harder I laughed! Ha ha ha ha...
The old woman rolled with laughter.

“And then she brought me into this world and treated me like some kind of trophy!”
The old woman's face became smug and she turned into a young girl. But it looked funny because it was still flushed with laughter.
"I'm not a trophy!

Well, maybe that's why she doesn't come to visit me."
The young woman sighed almost imperceptibly, and then smiled again in embarrassment.

“You have to go. Leave the door open. Come next full moon.
And don't forget to give this cloak to our old friend."

Grandma Ame Stories

After leaving the Osen house, I turned left and then right along a winding alley and approached Grandma Ame's house.
Even the cicadas fell silent in the modest but graceful courtyard. There was only the murmur of water in the suikinkutsu, and the rhythmic beats of the shishi-odoshi.
Long ago, in the mountains and forests where youkai could lead a carefree life, there lived a woman who could turn fog into rain. She was a good friend of tanuki and kitsune.
Naturally, we youkai are very different from mortals. We do not bother ourselves with unnecessary complexities and statuses. But in the mountains shrouded in fog and rain, the quiet Ame-onna has always been loved and respected.
But one day, Narukami subjugated this land. Good times came for mortals, and youkai either lived in seclusion or were persecuted ... It was then that Ame's grandmother moved to Toki Street. A kitsune from the Narukami Great Shrine, Lady Guji, gave her this house as a token of her goodwill.
Stopping in the courtyard, I watched the crescent moon sway in the pond when her voice rang softly in the cool night air.

"I'm sorry for making you wait so long."
When I turned around, I saw Ame-onna standing at the door. She was bathed in pale moonlight, her long white dress shone, but her young and slender figure exuded the sadness of a bygone era.

I lowered my eyes and hurriedly handed over the cloak Osen gave me, not daring to meet the pale gray eyes.
There is a rumor among mortals that Ame-onna's eyes are of a marble gray-white hue, like those of a drowned man. Those who dare to look directly into those sad eyes will be forever lost in the rain and fog.
Of course, this is just a stupid legend, but among the youkai, there really was a rule "do not look into the eyes of Ame-onna."

"Thank you".
Grandma Ame's voice, as always, was as soft and gentle as morning dew in a fog.

She didn't invite me in and didn't tell the story.
I only handed over a wooden box, but I didn’t need anything else.
The bright moon was still shining when I quietly left the courtyard.

Volume V

History of Gongbei

Gongbei was 76 years old and the only mortal living on Toki Street. He was a farmer, a samurai and an artisan.
The box in my hands was made by him, its smooth black lacquered surface inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl. He learned this craft from the fishermen of Watatsumi Island.

"Thank you".
The old man in front of me bowed his head low.
Even though I thought to myself that this is how mortals should treat youkai, I still felt a pang of pity for him.

Gongbei claims that, contrary to the well-known legend, he was once a close friend of Ame-onna, wandering among the mountains and forests.
Gongbei, who was still a teenager at the time, tried to bring rain to drought-affected fields. He heeded the words of the village elder and went to the mountains to seek help from Ame-onna.
At that time, Ame's grandmother was no longer young and acutely felt many changes in the world. But the inhabitants of mountains and forests are always cleaner and more naive than mortals.

What happened next? Young Gongbei made a terrible mistake by deceiving the inhabitants of the mountains and seas. Though to this day, he still insists that he cheated to save his village.

That year turned out to be really exceptionally fruitful due to heavy rains.

After that, Gongbei, who was very ashamed, avoided the mountains and forests and settled in the city for a long time.

"I'm sorry," the aging mortal lowered his head, but did not accept the box. I left his house before the moonlight disappeared behind dark clouds.

Intermission

It is said that in the past, when fragile and short-lived mortals had not yet crossed the sea and reached these lands, Inazuma was the land of tanuki.
Born lazy and carefree, tanuki never worry about tomorrow or cherish past sorrows. In those days, the lands of Inazuma were a cozy paradise for tanuki, and every day was a noisy holiday.

At least that's what the tanuki elders always said.

Later, kitsune sailed from across the sea and started a war with tanuki that lasted for many generations. Only when both sides suffered heavy losses did peace negotiations begin. The tanukis are still stubborn and do not admit defeat, but the fact remains that they were forced to give way to the huge Thunder Cherry Kitsune.

But kitsune are no less cunning and skillful in reincarnations. They say that during the great war between kitsune and tanuki, due to constant substitutions and transformations, many unfortunate souls were completely confused and could no longer remember who they were and on which side.

From such bewildered youkai, mortals began to be born.

I wandered through the winding streets and alleys, retelling old tanuki stories.
But nowhere was there a single open restaurant.

Looks like it's time to go back.
With that thought, I stopped and stretched in front of Uncle Kitsune's carry-on kiosk.

Just at that moment, a familiar smell came from behind...
