How to Fight in One Piece Odyssey - Combat Explained

In previous One Piece video games, you had a fighting game, brawlers, and even Open-World Action games. This time One Piece Odyssey goes even further and brings you a complete turn based JRPG similar to other genre products like Dragon Quest и final Fantasy. If you are a beginner or even a veteran of the genre, you may have trouble understanding the combat system, mainly because the in-game tutorial is not very helpful. This page will help you understand the intricacies of the combat system.

One Piece Odyssey Combat Guide

First of all, you will need to start the battle, and in order to do this, you will need to approach the enemy in order to start the encounter. The enemies are visible on the screen, so it's up to you if you want to start the encounter or not. If you decide to start a battle, try attacking behind enemy lines, as this will catch them off guard, leading you to gain a combat bonus that will allow you to start your turn first. But it works both ways, and if you get caught off guard, the enemies will get an advantage that can cause problems for you later in the game.

Battle areas

Now you're in the middle of a fight and you've probably seen the tutorial, but you're still not entirely sure what's going on as the user interface can be hard to understand at first. While it's a turn-based judicial system, One Piece Odyssey changes a few things. The battle arena is divided into "areas" and your party members can either be all grouped into one area or they can be split into different areas with their own enemies to win. If you want to move your party to another area, you must first defeat an enemy in its area before you can use an attack on an enemy in the area you want to move to. You'll know when a character can move as the UI will have a small icon in the top left corner of their portrait that says "Can move!".

The battle arena is divided into smaller areas where some party members will be grouped and some not. , there are four segments around the enemy portrait. The enemy with the most segments filled will act first.

Move order

Another nice change is that you have the freedom to choose which party member will act first, which adds a good strategic element to the encounter, but the real reason for this is that you can target the enemy that comes next. This is indicated by a red circular arrow that spans the opponent's portrait, and is divided into four segments. The more segments are filled, the sooner the enemy begins to act.

Weakness and types of ATK

All attacks in One Piece Odyssey have rock/paper/scissor mechanics similar to the Fire Emblem games and each of your party members will be given an ATK type which will be either Strength, Speed or Technique. When you target an enemy they will have a type too and this will be displayed to the right of their health bar. What you want to do is attack the enemy with a weak type. For example, if the enemy is a vehicle type, you'll want to attack it with a party member that has a speed type due to the vehicle being weak to speed. This allows you to deal more damage to the enemy.

  • Power: This is displayed as a red fist icon and is strong for speed but weak for technique.
  • Agility: It is displayed as an orange pistol icon and is strong for vehicles but weak for strength.
  • Skill: It is displayed as a green sword icon and is strong for Strength but weak for Speed.

Luckily, you don't have to remember this yourself, as the game does a great job of showing you this in the user interface. When you target an enemy, their portrait in the top left will have a set of arrows in the bottom right. These will either be red arrows pointing up or blue arrows pointing down. The last option shows you that you will deal less damage to the enemy with this character, while the first one will show you that you will deal more damage.

There are other weaknesses to consider, some enemies will be weak to a certain element such as Burn, Freeze, Lightning, etc. (element guide find here). And your skills can inflict these elements. When choosing which skill to use, look to the right of the skill name and it will have "Weak" next to the TP cost. This can also be seen under the portrait of the enemy.

Change of party members

At any point in your turn order, you can change party members to another, and unlike other games that do this, you won't lose a turn. If you wanted to, you could change the entire batch and still get your turn! You may be thinking why do you need it? But what if you get into an encounter or boss fight that turns out to be Power ATK type enemies? You might want to switch most of your Power-type party members to vehicle types so you can exploit the enemy's weakness. There are almost no restrictions on changing your party members, other than if they have status effects on them or if they have depleted all of their health.

You can switch which character goes next by selecting the left or right option.

Character Skills in One Piece Odyssey

With the basics covered, we move on to the fun part, skills. Each party member will have an arsenal of skills to attack enemies and it costs TP (Technical Points) to use them. Once you have used up your TP, you will need to replenish it, which can be done by using normal attacks on an enemy or by using an item such as Apple of Excitement.

Looking at skills, when you hover over a certain skill, you will see what the total attack power is, which is indicated by a big red circle, the ATK range (close or long), and the ATK type and element. Take a look at Sanji's Flamberg Shot skill. He will tell you that the attack power is 2796, he can only attack enemies in close proximity to him, so in the same area, and this is a Power ATK type with a Burn element.

By breaking it, this skill is strong against Speed ATK types, but weak against Technique. It can only hit enemies in the same area as Sanji due to its close ATK range and it has a chance to burn the target especially if they are weak to that particular element.

Now take a look at Sanji's "Premiere Hache" and "Party Table Kick Course". In the image for the first one, you will see two circles, one with your character standing in it, and the other circle will have enemy icons. Since the enemy icons are in the opposite circle from your character, this means that the attack range is long, and since it has multiple enemy icons, the attack will hit multiple enemies (AoE).

With "Party Table Kick Course" the enemy icons are in the same circle your character is standing in, that means it's a close range attack, but it's still an AoE because it has multiple enemy icons in it. On the other hand, Sanji's Concasser Skill only has a single enemy icon in a circle, which means that the attack will only target one enemy.

Dramatic battles

Throughout your travels, you will receive combat scenarios called Dramatic Battles. The in-game tutorials will show you two cases where this happens. The first is when Usopp is paralyzed and you have to defeat the enemies before Usopp gets knocked down. A little later, you'll have to heal Nami for 25% of her health before she gets knocked down. Success in these tasks will reward you with an EXP bonus. There are more of them throughout the game where you will need to complete a task during the battle and you will be rewarded for your efforts.

Dramatic battles will reward you with a lot of EXP for completing small combat missions.

Formations

Finally, we have Formations. They allow you to choose in which areas you want the characters to start the battle alone or with specific party members. You can access this menu by selecting Swap Leader and the Formations selection option will be on your right. There are six formations that do the following things:

You can access the Shaping menu from the Switch Leader menu.

There is another formation that will be unlocked after you beat the game.
