How to complete the Explorer mission - Stepping Stone Summit in Grounded

This page details everything you need to know about how to complete the Explorer - Stepping Stone Summit quest in Grounded, which can be obtained in the ASL terminal after talking with the robot named BURG. L in Oak Lab. We will tell you where you can find the trail marker and what materials you need to build it.

Where to find the Stepping Stone Summit trail marker

Stepping Stone Summit is located in the northwestern part of the courtyard, north of Haze Lab or southwest of Garden Gnomeas shown on the map below. The trail marker itself is located at the edge of one of the steps, and you should see it as a blue structure that has yet to be built, much like you see placed items that are waiting to be built at your base.

You can find your way to the top of the steps by jumping up most of them, but if you're having trouble, you should look for falling leaves in the area, which often serve as bridges over some of the rocks, or which can be used as ramps to climb higher. Just keep moving towards the point shown on the map above and you should find the trail marker pretty quickly.

How to Build a Stepping Stone Summit Trail Marker

You will need 2 Twigs, 2 Plant Fibers, and 1 Clover Leaf to build a trail marker, so it's a good idea to collect them on your way to it. If you're already there and don't have enough materials, don't worry. There are many clover plants, scattered twigs and other vegetation from which you can get plant fiber in the area around the steps. You can always place your own marker in place of the trail marker on the map to quickly find your way back.

Once you have all the materials to create a trail marker, all you have to do is interact with it and press a key to assemble it. You can then customize the icon and its color if you like. This icon will be visible on your HUD as you roam the yard, which basically means you will be able to see it from a distance when you are looking in the right direction, as shown in the screenshot below.

Note: Using trail markers

As you might have guessed, the more trail marker quests you complete, the more icons you'll start to see marking specific locations, both on the map and on the HUD as you wander around the yard. They're incredibly useful for garden orientation, and you can even build certain types of bases on trail markers to remind yourself of what's there.

How to turn off trail markers

With the trail marker built, you should have earned 200 Raw Science. You can always turn off the trail marker from the map so it doesn't show up on your HUD if you don't need it, but it shouldn't be too intrusive to leave, and the orienting icons are very useful.

Copying trail markers

You will notice that when interacting with the built trail marker, you have the option to copy it. You can do this to create another trail marker nearby, which you can also customize with your own icon and color. This can be useful to mark the location of specific field stations on your HUD, or mark the location of a particularly good farming spot for materials/beetles. You can even just tag a site that you think is beautiful, or place a marker on top of one of your bases, for example.
