Looking for something new in Minecraft?

Maybe you have killed the Ender Dragon and want a new challenge. Maybe you just finished that massive build you were planning and now you're getting bored.

Or maybe you just enjoy watching things explode. Anyway, let me show you how to make fireworks in Minecraft.

Also known as Firework Rockets, they are items used to make bright, decorative explosions. If you're looking to create a colorful holiday display in your world, these are the ones for you.

Spoiler alert: You can do more fun things with fireworks. You can use them as crossbow bolts and blow up some mobs or even make your own jetpack.

But we will return to this later. About everything in order.

How to craft fireworks in Minecraft?

It's worth noting that you can get the basic Firework Rocket in creative mode. This is one of the items available in your inventory.

But this is a very simple option without visual effects. If you want more impressive performance - or if you're into survival mode - here's what you need to do:

Your pyrotechnic journey begins at the crafting table. You will also need two key ingredients:

  • 1 (at least) gunpowder
  • 1 (at least) paper

To purchase gunpowder, take your trusty weapon, head outside and find creeper.

Then kill him.

Killing a Creeper is easier than you think. Remember that they explode when they are near you. Just hit him once and back away quickly. Boom, done.

Now you need paper. Find and mine three sugar canes and then go to your crafting table. Arrange the three canes as follows:

There - you have the second ingredient for the fireworks recipe.

Combine gunpowder and paper as shown below for a basic Firework rocket.

Notice how it says "Flight Duration 1". When crafting a rocket in Minecraft, you can add more gunpowder to make it stronger. A maximum of three pieces of gunpowder with a flight duration of 3. They must be placed separately - placing a stack of three in one square will not work.

Right now you have firework Rocket. However, don't start celebrating just yet. You will notice that it does not explode in the sky.

This is because you need a fireworks star. This is the second item you create to give your show the pizza it needs.

Before we dive deeper, here's an idea of what I'm talking about. The simplest Minecraft Firework Star you can make is as follows:

One piece of gunpowder plus one piece of any dye gives you a star of that color. In the picture I'm doing red.

Once you have the star, combine it with paper and rocket powder which explodes into a small colored ball.

Again, this is the base model. Minecraft Firework Star is responsible for the color, shape and additional effects of your pyrotechnic display. Each of these aspects is determined by the components you use for your Star.

Now that you know the basics, let's take a look at some of the types of fireworks you can make:

Color

This speaks for itself. Add a dye of your choice and you'll have a star that will change your firework colors. You can add more than one for a more whimsical multicolor show.

Shape Effects

In addition, you can add an ingredient to your crafting table that will change the shape of the Firework Star explosion. Here is a list of possible figures:

  • Explosion of a small ball - by default. Do not add the shape effect ingredient.
  • Large Balloon Explosion - Add a fire charge to the firework recipe.
  • Starburst is my personal favorite. Throw the gold nugget on the table.
  • Creeper-Face Explosion - If you want a big exploding Creeper in the sky, add a random one head to the crafting table.
  • Blast Explosion - Use one feather when creating a Star.

Additional effects

Once you have chosen your desired color and shape, you can add some more firework effects. Here are your options:

  • None is the default.
  • Twinkle - Add Glowstone Dust to the crackle effect recipe after the explosion.
  • Trail - The diamond will add a trail effect to your display.
  • Both - unlike the Shape stat, you can choose more than one additional effect. Add Glowstone Dust and Diamond for the best of both worlds.

As with everything in Minecraft, you have a lot of freedom to experiment. Between the different colors, shapes and effects in the game, there are 2,1 trillion fireworks options.

Yes, trillion. Go crazy.

Now.

Here's what a more complex Firework Star recipe looks like:

As you can see, I added a diamond and Glowstone Dust for both effects. I have a gold nugget for a starburst. And I filled the rest of the slots with some dyes.

And here is the result:

Now you know how to make fireworks in Minecraft.

But do you know how to use them?

As I said at the beginning, there are many things you can do. You can set them up manually or build a repeater for a bigger show. YouTuber Vivtorsing goes into detail on how to make a repeater dispenser here.

You can also shoot fireworks with a crossbow.

Here are the steps:

  • Equip your crossbow
  • In the Inventory screen, place a firework in the slot to disable
  • Just aim and shoot.

Don't forget to right-click - cocking the crossbow takes a second or two.

How to use fireworks with Elytra?

Minecraft worlds are huge. Walking in Survival can quickly become a chore. Especially if you have several bases to travel between them.

What if I told you that you could fly instead?

Elytra are very rare wings that you can only find in the End Cities. Their official description states that they are "the only source of flight in Survival Mode". In truth, on their own, they are your best source of...planning.

If you want to soar in the sky, you need to tweak things a bit. Here is the exercise:

  • Purchase and equip a set of Elytra wings.
  • Create some fireworks. You don't actually need the stars for this part - they are purely visual.
  • Put Rockets on your hotbar.
  • Find a high spot and jump off it.
  • In the air, press Space again. You will start to slide.
  • When you slide right click and use your rocket. This will push you in the direction you are facing.

Congratulations! You now have a jetpack.

Be careful with your landings. Slowly descend and hit the ground at an angle. If you go straight down, you will take fall damage.

Bonus Tip: Remember when we talked about adding more gunpowder to the fireworks recipe?

You might be tempted to do it now and get more rocket flight time.

No need. You are better off using level 1. They cost one gunpowder and give you one second boost.

By comparison, Flight Duration 3 costs three pieces of gunpowder and only enlarges you by three seconds. This is a bad use of your resources.

Afterword

Mojang is one of the greatest sandbox games of our time. There are so many things you can create and even more ways to use them.

Unleash your creativity! Experiment with almost limitless combinations. Equip missiles or put on a massive pyromancy show. Soar like a bird or use them as distress calls when you are separated from your friends.

The sky is the limit. Verbatim.
