Thanks to an agreement with the FTC, Epic Games must pay $245 million in refunds - here's everything Fortnite players who qualify for a refund need to know.
Epic has been accused by the Federal Trade Commission of illegally collecting data from children and defrauding millions of gamers of all ages into inadvertently making in-app purchases.
Since then, Epic and the FTC have come to an agreement whereby the Fortnite maker will pay $520 million in compensation. Of that figure, $275 million will settle a trade commission lawsuit that Epic violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting information from Fortnite users under the age of 13 without obtaining parental consent.
The remaining $245 million will be set aside to refund consumers who are manipulated by the developer's use of "dark patterns" to trick players into inadvertently purchasing in-game items.
How to know if you're eligible for a Fortnite FTC refund
Today, December 19, Federal Trade Commission detailed to whom she plans to make refunds available when the "refund program" launches. The guidelines state the following:
- Parents whose children made an unauthorized credit card purchase on the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018
- Fortnite players who were charged in-game currency (V-Bucks) for unwanted in-game items (such as cosmetics, llamas, or battle passes) between January 2017 and September 2022 by Fortnite players.
- Fortnite players whose accounts were suspended between January 2017 and September 2022 after disputed unauthorized payments with their credit card companies.
For now, picky consumers have little else to do until more details about the program are available. The FTC will update its Fortnite pagewhen more information becomes available. Users can also subscribe to email updates regarding the return program.
There is currently no date or time for the launch of the program, and it is not known how long it may take for the parties involved to iron out the specifics.
