Mass Effect moves to Unreal Engine? - December 19th
BioWare producer Brenon Holmes shared a tweet noting that the team is looking for programmers with experience with Unreal Engine 4 and 5.
The significance of this is that it suggests the franchise will move away from Frostbite, EA's own engine. The franchise ran on Unreal Engine before switching to Frostbite with the ill-fated Mass Effect Andromeda.
Is there a release date for Mass Effect 4?
As of now, BioWare hasn't given us a release date, nor do we know if Mass Effect will be released in 2022, 2023, or later.
WindowsCentral suggested that the game will appear no earlier than 2024.
However, we expect the game to release on current generation consoles, coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Mass Effect 4 trailer
BioWare has released a cinematic trailer for Mass Effect 4, though it's more of a complex teaser/development confirmation.
The trailer shows the camera hovering over several galaxies in space before zooming in on one, past a star and vast alien structures, to then follow a small ship as it descends to an icy planet.
While this is happening, various voices can be heard reenacting important (but fictional) moments from human history. These include space travel, first contact with alien life, and some sort of catastrophe. It could be the Reaper Crisis from the original Mass Effect trilogy, or one of humanity's early wars with aliens.
Finally, the trailer shows racer Ansari climbing a mountain in the snow before retrieving something burnt from the ground. The female Ansari clears the snow to reveal that the item is part of N7's armor before smiling at her discovery.
The N7 armor could, of course, be a reference to Commander Shepard, Ryder from Mass Effect Andromeda, or someone completely new, depending on the game's settings. Some fans have speculated that the female Ansari might be Liara T'Soni. However, this is unlikely if Mass Effect 4 is a sequel to Andromeda, as that game takes place 600 years after Mass Effect 3 and the entire galaxy.
Mass Effect 4 poster
A poster released by BioWare in November 2021 offered more Mass Effect 4 clues. It accompanied an update from BioWare posted at company blog on day N7, which read:
“We are, of course, hard at work on the next adventure in the Mass Effect universe. Until then, please accept our most humble thanks to you for accompanying us on this journey. We know we couldn't have done it without you - on N7 or any other day."
A poster soon followed, depicting a crewed ship leaving for an alien planet. Fans with good eyesight will immediately notice that it depicts a landing party approaching a crater and what looks like a damaged geth body.
Geth were our main cannon fodder in the early Mass Effect games. They are a race of robots that share the hivemind and were used by the Reapers as troops in Mass Effect 1 and 2. However, the geth turned against their puppeteers in Mass Effect 3, joining the fight against the Reapers.
The Troopers also appear to be made up of four characters, each reminiscent of one of Mass Effect's key races. The character on the left is almost certainly a member of the Krogan race. Man and Ansari are also relatively clear.
Setting and plot
Mass Effect 4 promotional materials seem to be closer to the original Mass Effect games than to the later Andromeda games. The fourth game in the series was not as popular as the original three and was infamous for its character models at launch.
BioWare may abandon the Andromeda experiment in Mass Effect 4 and return to the more fertile land of the Milky Way. Of course, this is all speculation, as Mass Effect 4 could very well continue the adventures of the Ryder twins with BioWare, learning from the mistakes made during the previous installment.
