League of Legends Worlds 2020 Confirmed: Teams, Start Date and More
Riot Games has confirmed that the 2020 League of Legends World Championship will still take place following recent concerns, sharing more details on the end-of-season mass event location, format, schedule, teams, and more.
The World Championship or "Worlds" is the most prestigious tournament in League of Legends, as the best teams from each region come together every year in hopes of winning the Summoner's Cup.
Despite the fact that there were concerns about the 2020 World Cup, after Cancellation of the Mid-Season Invitational Riot shared an update with League fans and revealed that the event is still scheduled for China.
LoL Worlds 2020 location revealed
Although China will still host the 2020 World Cup, each stage of the competition will no longer be held in a different city.
Instead, the LoL esports tournament will take place exclusively in Shanghai, with the finals taking place at the new Pudong Football Stadium.
“Hosting the event in a single city will reduce the amount of travel throughout the tournament and give us the ability to more closely control the exhibition environment,” Riot explained in its latest blog post.
It's not yet clear if viewers will be able to attend the event, but Riot has confirmed that they will continue to strive to improve the "virtual fan experience" in 2020.
"From the Elder Dragon in 2017 to last year's Holonet technology with True Damage, we've always tried to innovate in the viewer experience and we're incredibly excited about this year's show," they added.
When does League Worlds 2020 start?
The 2020 World Championship kicks off on September 25th, bringing fans more than a month of top-level League of Legends gaming, ending on October 31st with the finals.
Riot also announced some changes to the World Championship in the coming years. They said they would be returning to China with a full tour "as intended" in 2021, thus reducing the possibility of holding North America until 2022.
Along with the update, the developers also released a teaser trailer for the upcoming event:
