guide

So, are you trying to find these elusive Red Dead Online Legendary Animals? EThis guide will help you move on to the next step in mastering Mother Nature.

There are several different ways to track down legendary animals, one much more reliable than the other, but you'll need to do a bit of both to complete your Animal Guide with a sample of each. So, here's everything you need to know about Legendary Animals in Red Dead Online, including what they are, how to find them, and our top tips for finding Legendary Spawns.

What legendary animals exist in Red Dead Online?

Legendary animals are rare of their kind, making them valuable to Harriet's research. They also have special colored skins that Gus can make special clothes out of if you choose to strip them off. This is a fastidious group that appears rarely and usually under certain conditions.

You will receive a legendary animal card when you reach naturalist rank 5, which can be found in the item wheel. It shows the general location of several legendary animals, but it's not a complete list and doesn't give you other important information about when they spawn. To help you pinpoint exactly where to find them, we've outlined the locations and conditions for each Red Dead Online Legendary Animal in the table below on this page.

Red Dead Online: How to Find Legendary Animals

There are several ways to find Legendary Animals and you will need to complete each of them in order to complete your Animal Guide:

Accept a mission from Harriet

One of each legendary animal species can only be found during the respective missions given by Harriet after you reach level 5 as a Naturalist. She usually has two or three missions available at the same time, each with a countdown timer showing when a new mission will replace her, usually 30 minutes to an hour.

Legendary Animal Missions are somewhat similar to Legendary Bounties in that they will force you to track a target around an area and sometimes fight enemies while you do so. Each animal mission has multiple options, so it might be different the first few times you complete it. These missions will eventually hit you if you don't find the animal in the allotted time, though unfortunately you'll only get a 30 second warning. The mission ends as soon as you skin an animal or take a sample. Just remember: Harriet doesn't like it when you kill animals. .

Embark on a free roam mission

There are several new events you can take part in to get a legendary animal specimen:

  • Protect the legendary animal: you and a group of other players rescue an animal and then fend off poachers while escorting it to its destination. Each member of the mission will receive a sample upon completion.
  • Wild Animal Markings: you and a group of players work together to euthanize and examine a group of normal animals. During the mission, a legendary animal may appear. It's not clear if this is guaranteed, but it has happened in my experience. Each mission participant will receive a sample of the legendary animal.

You can get a sample and find an entry in the Animal Guide about the legendary animals you struggle to find by participating in these events, even if you can't bring home the hide.

Find the legendary animal in the free roam

Legendary Animals can spawn while playing Red Dead Online as usual in Free Roam. As with other animals, most players seem to be more likely to see Legendary Animals spawn in a lobby with fewer other players.

If you're looking for a specific legendary animal, I've listed known spawn locations below. For each legendary animal, there are several exact spawn locations in the general locations below. Don't worry too much about hovering in a specific location: as long as you're nearby, you should see a notification that someone has arrived nearby.

When a legendary animal appears nearby, you will see a notification in the upper left corner and a yellow question mark on the minimap. Using the legendary animal pheromones sold by Harriet will unlock a more specific location. Important Note: Pheromones won't make a legendary animal appear, they only show the location of one that is already nearby.

In my experience, you're better off going to a new game lobby via the online menu if the legendary game you're looking for hasn't shown up in a few minutes. Once, with one squad, I waited unsuccessfully for three nights in the game (2 real hours) until the onyx wolf appeared near Cotorra Springs. The next day, Onyx Wolf appeared on the third server that I entered in the same area.

All Legendary Animal Locations Red Dead Online

Here is a list of legendary animals currently available for the naturalist role. You will notice in your animal guide that there are quite a few entries that are just question marks without a portrait of any animal. Rockstar looks set to add more Legendary Animals in future updates, as they originally did with the Legendary Bounty Hunter rewards.

This table lists the location and conditions for each currently available legendary animal. In my experience, time of day and weather preferences are just preferences. Legendary animals can be found in other settings, but those listed here reflect when they are most likely to appear.
