Best Free PC Games for 2020

screen

Here are the best free pc games to date of all time that you can play in your browser or download to your computer.

Our list of the best free PC games has received a spring cleaning for 2020. Old and new aside, our list is full of free games worth checking out. We've reorganized and expanded our top, helping you find the perfect free game to get addicted to. It has almost every genre and style available for free play, from MS-DOS classics, indie browser games, parodies of popular games, to online multiplayer universes with microtransactions.

There are plenty of free PC games here, so to make things easier, we've divided the list into genres with our favorite free titles at the very top. Some of them are free online games, others are free to download from sites like Itch.io, and there are plenty of free games to lose hundreds of hours playing.

THE BEST FREE PC GAMES AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW

  • Bombergrounds: Battle Royale is Bomberman, but in large 25-player matches. Super fast action.
  • Deltarune The creator of Undertale's next game has a free first chapter, and it's just as cute and weird as Toby Fox's last game.
  • Eternal Home Floristry - an amazingly beautiful little narrative game about an injured hitman working at a flower show until he heals
  • Dwarf Fortress is a terrific story generator about running a dwarven society in a world that can kill them horribly and hilariously. One of our favorite sims.
  • Haunted PS1 Demo Disc is an amazing collection of low poly horror demos that evoke early Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Weird, creative, creepy.
  • NetHack Yes, it's ASCII, but stick with it. It's a roguelike dungeon crawler that lets you do so much more than you ever expected.
  • Path of Exile - If you like Diablo style game, PoE is the best RPG game to play for free. It's constantly getting new expansions, has a seasonal game, and has a "sequel" in the works, which is actually a massive overhaul.
  • We Were Here is a co-op adventure where you and your friend are separated, but you need to cooperate with a walkie-talkie to avoid a spooky castle.
  • Wolfenstein 3D Do you remember when 3D was such a big deal like the title of the game? This is the classic 1992 Wolfenstein in all its glory.

BEST FREE GAMES

12.30

While most of the games on this list fully free, these free games are backed by microtransactions or paid upgrades. They want your money, but they are also massive games that can take months or years to play and one of the most played games in the world. These are the ones we think are worth your time.

Fortnite

This phenomenally successful third-person shooter drops 100 players onto the map and narrows the playing area until only one person or team wins. Once you have landed on your hang glider, you need to raid buildings and collect chests in search of weapons. You can also build structures anywhere. The best players can build and fight at the same time in wonderful shows of agility.

Hearthstone

Outstanding, digital card game. Regular events and card drops keep the bubble meta going. The density of the available card collection is huge, but you can keep up with our review best legendary cards .

Warframe

You play as a fantasy ninja in this third-person co-op game. Warframe's popularity is gradually growing as more updates and issues are added. The game even got huge open world zones in addition to the many, many missions that make up its campaign.

League of Legends

Two teams of five battle it out across three lanes in this colorful MOBA. Summoner's Rift provides long and intense competition, but you can also jump into the Roaring Abyss for some All Random All Mid action.

Path of Exile

It's a crisp and detailed Diablo-like RPG with a surprisingly deep character progression system. It's not the prettiest action RPG in the world, but it's fun and rewarding in the long run. The microtransactions aren't too intrusive either, making this a must-have for fans of Diablo 2 and the like.

BEST FREE GAMES: CLASSICS

online

MS-DOS Archive.org Library. This recommendation exists outside of the genre as it is a collection of thousands of classic PC games that can be played in the browser. The Archive.org MS-DOS collection contains over 4000 games, all emulated and easy to play in just a few seconds. Wolfenstein 3D, Prince of Persia, Jazz Jackrabbit, Carmen Sandiego… You can have an entire dinner party playing these games alone.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert Westwood's alternate history is still a great RTS. Visit CNCNet and you'll find downloads of Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun, all updated to run great on modern systems and integrated with CnCNet's multiplayer platform for easy online play.

StarCraft - Two decades after its first release, Blizzard is now offering its strategic space opera for free. The pack also brings you the new crop of the Brood War expansion: campaigns, tile sets, units and upgrades. Get this APM.

The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall — Daggerfall, with a 63 square mile map, is a massive RPG set in the Breton home of High Rock. It features many elements that remain in the Elder Scrolls series today, including guilds, enchantments, and a reputation system. It's not as accessible as Skyrim, but a great RPG for its time.

Beneath a Steel Sky - Developed by Revolution, best known as Broken Sword, this point-and-click dystopian adventure was created in collaboration with master watchmaker Dave Gibbons. This is an enjoyable adventure with tricky puzzles that uses the hero's body-switching robotic assistant.

FreeCiv - First released on PC over 20 years ago, this open source turn-based strategy game is heavily inspired by Civilization. Available in 33 languages, running on almost every OS under the sun, completely free, it's no surprise that the game has been hugely successful.

Dark Mod - Not a mod, but rather a fully functional standalone ode to Thief with many custom levels. If you love a thief, this is all you need.

BEST FREE GAMES: ACTION

game

Marathon is a classic 90s shooter from Bungie that went on to make Halo and Destiny. The complete trilogy can be played for free.

HETS - Spelunky meets Contra in this killer platform game where you explore one randomly generated level after another. The guns push you back with their powerful recoil, shake the screen, and turn enemies into pixelated confetti.

xonotic - A retro arena-style FPS that will remind you of Quake 3 Arena, maintained and updated by an active community.

Double Action Boogaloo Is it enough just to kill your enemy? Much better to blow them up during a slow dive from the balcony. This is the joy of Double Action: Boogaloo, an action shooter with acrobatics and bullets that somehow works online.

Canabalt is the game that invented the endless runner, and also the game that proved that it's impossible to jump through a window if you're really trying to. I love Canabalt for its atmospheric, understated sci-fi graphics and amazing soundtrack.

The Last Tango — The rhythm of espionage for survival. I would call it Dance Dance Execution, but the principle is the same. You play as two spies dancing through many deadly locations. They will fly past traps, dodge attacks and destroy enemies with an elegant spin.

BEST FREE STRATEGY GAMES

Gridland is the perfect browser game. It's a match-XNUMX, but it's really a building and survival game: during the day, you pick up bricks, wood, etc. to collect the materials you need to build a small village. When night falls, rats, zombies and skeletons appear when you connect the corresponding icons on the game board. At the moment it is a struggle for survival. Gridland can easily eat up weekends if you're not careful.

Twisted Insurrection is a standalone Command & Conquer Tiberian sun mod that surpasses the original game with new units and massive campaigns. A must try for RTS fans.

BEST FREE GAMES: EXPLORE

Olav and the Lute is a mysterious adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world with amazing central mechanics. Instead of combining objects with other objects, you affect the world of lutes by plucking its color-coded strings. It's a bit like Ocarina of Time, and very similar to LOOM; for example, to open a door, you will select a certain combination using the game's moderately complex interface. Olav & Lute is a short, bright, colorful adventure.

Bad Dream: Series “Bad Dream is all about clicks. Being a point-and-click adventure series, it may seem obvious, but rarely does clicking things as satisfying as it is in these dark games.

flow - Minimalistic appeal and dynamic difficulty curve adjustment flow attracted the attention of hundreds of thousands of people. Use the mouse to guide the creature through the evolutionary swamp, devour small animals to grow, and press red drops to swim deeper. As you eat, you evolve, but you can see large predators moving through the darkness in the levels below, waiting to devour you whole. Serene but addictive.

Cube Escape is basically a room escape, but with a dark sense of humour, a touch of weird lynching, and mystery stories that have caused a lot of controversy among fans. It's an inspired mix, with challenging puzzles and an addictive atmosphere.

off-peak “Off-Peak is like visiting an album made from a jazz fusion dream. It's a strange but brilliant space filled with all sorts of oddities. There's a former violist who now treats his ramen counter like a section of strings, and a whale that hangs in the main space outshines everything else as you steal slices of pizza far below.

Hyperrogue - Although the concept is a bit intimidating, in practice it is one of the more accessible roguelikes as it streamlines the genre to focus on movement and combat. You're jumping around a mathematically tricky sphere here, much larger than its surface area and spanning wildly different geographic regions.

Brogue - ASCII roguelike has a reputation for being impenetrable. Brog, despite staying true to the genre, works hard to feel accessible. The controls make dungeon navigation easy, and the elegant shading makes the symbols atmospheric and readable.

BEST FREE GAMES: STORIES AND COMEDIES

Deltarune Who knows where Deltarune is taking for the Undertale sequel, for its second chapter, but this hours-long RPG is already like a complete game that takes the player from their school to a hectic fantasy land and back. The game manages to be fun and moving at the same time, as well as dark.

Butterfly Soup is one of our favorite visual novels. Jody described it as "a coming-of-age story but also a story of self-discovery" that is great with its authentic characters and smart writing.

Emily is away - party like it's the early 90s in this client chat storytelling game. You'll get to know high school student Emily through snippets of online conversations about life, love, and indie rock music. If you like it, then it's worth checking out the paid sequel to Emily's Away.

Double Hitler What if Hitler was two kids in a giant raincoat the whole time? Double Hitler recreates key moments in Adolf's adult life, putting you in the role of fairytale children in a giant coat. As you can imagine, even walking is difficult when you are really two kids in a big jacket, and about 90% of the game is spent staying upright without tipping over and revealing your secret. Double Hitler is pretty much QWOP: amazingly stupid, and hilarious.

Aye Fair Lady is a musical adventure game bursting with jokes. This Yorkshire point-and-click game is fully voiced, so you can enjoy this regional accent to the fullest. You play a conspirator named Steggy who is trying to destroy Mandatory Singing Day with a song that will destroy the competition. It's just a few big screens, but it's full of quirky characters and some great tunes.

Dog of Dracula 2 Set in the aftermath of a seasoning ban by a now deposed tyrant, and with the world now largely cyberbanned, Dog of Dracula 2 will take you to the uninhabited neon world of Nuevo Tokyo. Follow the tale of an unfortunate friendship - about your connection to a small puppy at Cape Dracula who wears a green Mohican and a series of cyber-implants. Dog of Dracula 2 was completely immersed in 90s pop culture and insanely into cyberpunk tropes.

Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden Neo New York is reeling from the devastation of Dank Chaos. Falsely accused of a crime, former NBA player Charles Barkley is on the run from Michael Jordan. It's the basis for an absurd JRPG that revels in sending genre tropes.

Stick shift “As creator Robert Young says, “Stick Shift is an auto-erotic night driving game that makes a gay car feel good.” This is part of an anthology with Hurt Me Plenty and Succulent, covering erotica, politics and more. Stick Shift is fun and offers food for thought.

BEST FREE GAMES: PUZZLES

Schwerkraftprojektionsgerat - In this browser game, you play four Tetris boards at the same time. It's as annoying as it is enjoyable. When you hit the drop button, the piece of Tetris currently in the center of the screen is added to all four boards with their relative rotation, meaning it's guaranteed to be a terrible place on at least one of them.

Where Is My Beard? I usually keep my beard just below my chin and it's easy to find when a puzzle game asks me to find it. Where is my beard? You should make a set of unrelated shapes more unpretentious by designing them to touch  bearded  As you know, face fungus is contagious.

Naya's Quest Naya's Quest was created by VVVVVV and Super Hex creator Terry Cavanagh. This is an isometric puzzle platformer about a girl and her pilgrimage to the end of the world.

The Republic Times - You are a newspaper editor in a totalitarian state in this game from the creator of Return of the Obra Dinn. Every day you have to choose which stories to run and how much space to give them, which affects the popularity of your newspaper and the approval of the government by the general population. Smart and cynical.

BEST FREE GAMES: HORROR

Cry of fear A complete Half-Life conversion from 2013, Cry of Fear is impressive for what it tries to do with the aging GoldSrc engine. This is a game about running away from the spasmodic twitches of non-humans as you explore and solve puzzles and generally feel bad about your situation. It's scary, primarily because of the screams, but also because of his relentless tension. Despite some rough edges, this is an ambitious eight-hour horror of quality.

House of Abandon This story about a man playing a text adventure takes a sinister turn. Originally standalone, it became the first episode of the creepy, atmospheric adventure Tales of the Untold. You can still play it for free by downloading the demo from Steam.

Chyrza — Chirza is the horrible weirdness you experience with the alien desert landscapes being destroyed and the mentions of the strange and terrible pyramid. But it's not just Chirza. Kitty Horrshaw's back catalog is filled with spooky and creepy experiences.

BEST FREE GAMES: STRANGE

Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective is a bizarre punk fun game that takes the famous cat thing to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Using a deliberately clumsy control scheme, you jump and slide across floating platforms as you make your way towards the museum and receive clues from talking frogs.

David Lynch Teaching Typing Let the compelling facsimile of much-loved cult film and TV director David Lynch teach you how to type in this fun typing game that has nothing to do with the man himself.

Cyberpet Graveyard — unleash the flock adorable wavy mini pets on your desktop. Cyberpet Graveyard has many components. There is a text adventure, there are text files containing bits of knowledge, and windows where your pets live. Taken together, these elements collectively tell the story of little creatures bouncing around your computer.

A Museum of Dubious Splendors - The Museum of Doubtful Glitter - and a collection of stories and exhibition space. It elevates objects by oversaturating them, connecting them with the collection of fairy tales in the game, placing them in a museum space, making them beautiful and strange, hanging in space.

muscle world Prepare yourself for an unsettling journey into the world of gyms trapped in a kind of sports purgatory. In this RPG, you and your rival muscle men are forced to jump from huge ceilings, passing between breathing points where you can regenerate your stamina. Can you survive their taunts and master the muscle world?

Skeal Recommending Skeal is a tough job because the best experience is not knowing what to expect. To that end, it's an alpine skiing experience that becomes transcendent the longer you ski and the more you open it up.

Universal Paper Clips - at startup you have zero paperclips. Creating new ones is laborious, but... well, I won't spoil the surprise. Like Cookie Clicker, it starts out as a game about increasing numbers but turns into something much more sinister.

Lost Constellation - Tangentially connected with the Night in the forest. The Lost Constellation is the adventure of an astronomer who travels through the forest to see the ghost of his dead lover. The tone will be familiar to fans of Night in the Woods and also combines warmth and longing.

Sacramento Dziff's interactive sketchbook lets you explore a watercolor world right behind a small train station. Stroll among the flamingos or lilies, or head to the large greenhouse and take a peek inside. When the sun goes down, you will be driven back to the station and sent on your way.
