Minecraft 1.18, the second release of the update Caves & Cliffs, is a major update Java Edition, released on November 30, 2021, which updated the overworld generation with huge caves, higher mountains, and new biomes. This update was first made public with Snapshot 21w15a, when Mojang announced they were splitting Caves & Cliffs into two major releases. Some features of 1.18 and 1.17 were being developed at the same time as the official data set was released to preview the new world generation.

Innovations

objects

Plate

  • A new record "otherside" has been added, the track of which was written by Lena Rein.
    • Has a small chance to be found in Fortress Corridor Chests or very rarely in Treasury Chests.

Generating the world

Caves

  • Completely redone.
  • Now stretch down to Y = −59
  • They can consist of two types of stone, depending on the depth at which they are located.
    • Caves above Y = 0 are mostly made of normal stone.
    • Between Y = 0 and Y = 8 there is a mixed layer of stone and deep schist.
    • Abyssal slate completely replaces stone, starting at Y = 0.
      • Some ores and structures will still generate in the deep schist layer, as well as in tuff.
      • Earth, diorite, granite and andesite do not generate in this layer.
  • Karst and lush caves can now generate underground.
  • Can now spawn with aquifers and bodies of water that are independent of sea level (Y = 63).
    • Aquifers below Y = 0 may be composed of lava rather than water.
  • The caves that appeared before the new generation of the world have been significantly improved and will be mixed with new ones.
  • Added rifts that are similar to canyons, but narrower and deeper.
  • Noise caves have been added, which have three options in the form of cheese caves, spaghetti caves and noodle caves.
    • The cheese caves have stone pillars stretching from the ceiling to the floor.
      • These caves are so huge that you can easily fly elytras in them.
      • They abound in aquifers and ores.
    • Spaghetti caves are elongated caves with occasional small aquifers. Reminiscent of caves before the new generation.
    • The Noodle Caves are a thinner, wavy, and claustrophobic version of the Spaghetti Caves.

Mountains

  • Consist of 6 biomes:
    • mountain meadows
      • They are the lowest layer of a mountain and spawn at the base of a mountain, mostly near plains and other temperate biomes.
      • They resemble plains with a cold climate and flowers growing here; the plants in this biome are turquoise green and the water is dark blue.
      • Grass, tall grass, dandelions, cornflowers, poppies, daisies, and onions grow in this biome.
      • Lonely standing oaks and birches, on which there are always bee nests, can rarely be found here.
      • Rabbits, donkeys and sheep inhabit this biome.
      • Rogue villages and outposts meet here.
    • mountain grove
      • Reminiscent of a snowy taiga, but with blocks of snow instead of turf.
      • Generates on the slopes of a mountain if it borders a forest.
      • It consists of all types of snow, small spruces grow on the slopes.
      • Rabbits, wolves, foxes, sheep, pigs, chickens, and cows inhabit this biome.
      • Rogue outposts meet here.
    • snow slopes
      • Generated on the slopes of a mountain, if it borders on plains or snow-covered tundra.
      • They consist of layers and blocks of snow, loose snow and ice.
      • Rabbits and goats inhabit this biome.
      • Igloo and Rogue outposts meet here.
    • jagged tops
      • One of three biomes spawning on mountain tops.
      • They consist of layers and blocks of snow, as well as stone.
      • Generated if the mountain borders temperate, cold, or snowy biomes.
      • Only goats spawn here.
      • Rogue outposts meet here.
    • icy peaks
      • One of three biomes spawning on mountain tops.
      • Covered with snow, loose snow, regular and dense ice.
      • This biome generates on smoother, smaller peaks if the mountain borders temperate, cold, or snowy biomes.
      • Only goats spawn here.
    • rocky peaks
      • The highest mountain layer that is generated when the mountain is high enough.
      • Generated if the surrounding biomes are desert, jungle, savanna, or wasteland.
      • Covered with layers of stone and gravel.
      • Elongated accumulations of calcite are sometimes generated.
      • Rogue outposts meet here.

ore deposit

  • A rare elongated cluster of huge size, consisting of ore and other blocks.
  • Copper ore is generated along with granite and raw copper blocks above Y = 0.
  • Iron ore is generated along with tuff and raw iron blocks below Y = 0.

Renovation of old worlds

  • Terrain from new chunks will now blend into existing terrain without harsh or irregular transitions. Any buildings created by players near such chunks will either be intact, buried, or damaged.
  • The old bedrock layer from Y = 0 to Y = 4 will be replaced by deep shale.
  • If there is bedrock in a chunk at Y = 0, then a new generation will appear in it under any block that is not air.
  • The new bedrock layer will be located at Y = −64.

Game process

    • Frozen Ocean now generates near snowy taiga, snowy plains, or a snowy beach.
    • Cold ocean now generates near taiga, perennial taiga, plains or forests.
    • Normal ocean now generates near plains, forests, birch forests or dark forests.

    • Coal ore is generated uniformly from Y = 136 to Y = 256 and unevenly from Y = 0 and Y = 192, peaking at Y = 96.
    • Copper ore occurs between Y = -16 and Y = 112 and, like other ores, spawns unevenly. The maximum amount of this ore is located at a height of Y = 48. More frequent accumulations of copper ore can be seen in karst caves.
    • Iron ore spawns unevenly above Y=80, peaking at Y=256; from Y = −24 to Y = 57, reaching a maximum at Y = 16; and uniformly between Y = −64 and Y = −32.
    • Gold Ore now occurs between Y = -64 and Y = 32, peaking at Y = -16. In addition, some of it is also generated below Y = −48. The maximum height of gold ore in the wasteland has been increased from Y = 79 to Y = 256, and the total number of mineral veins here has been increased.
    • Lapis lazuli ore generates unevenly between Y=32 and Y=-32, peaking at height 0; and uniformly from Y = 64 to Y = −64, without meeting in the open air, like ancient debris.
    • Red ore is formed uniformly at a height from Y = 15 to Y = −64; and unevenly below Y = −32, reaching a peak at a height of −64.

    • Emerald Ore spawns unevenly above Y = −16, peaking at Y = 256 and decreasing as altitude decreases.

Treasure chest

  • Increased the number of treasures in the world.

Common

  • Terrain generation no longer depends on biomes, which now adapt to a particular terrain.
    • This allows you to change the height and shape of the terrain for the biome.
      • For example, deserts and forests can have hilly terrain without the need for a biome specially created for such generation.
    • This also results in a smoother transition from one biome to another.
  • The terrain has been changed: now it is smoother and sometimes has sharp elevation changes.
  • Added a new random number generator used to generate the Overworld.
  • The shape of the bedrock layers now depends on the game grain, not the version.

Game process

Achievements

  • The "Swift as a Hare" achievement is now preceded by "Sleep, my joy, sleep" instead of "Adventure".

Performance

  • Various background tasks, including world creation, now run in the background thread pool.
    • The size of the thread pool can be determined by the formula Количество доступных потоков ЦП - 1.
      • The maximum number of threads is 255 instead of 7. This limitation can be overridden by the Java system property max.bg.threads.

Server

  • server.jar now merges individual libraries instead of merging all files into one archive.
    • This change is intended to address certain issues related to Java modules.
  • When you run server.jar will unpack the libraries into a directory configured with bundlerRepoDir (by default this is the working directory).
    • To start a main class other than the server, use the property bundlerMainClass.
  • The server classes are now signed.
