Our Minecraft Food guide will help you learn how food and more importantly hunger works in the world's favorite survival simulator. Unless you're playing in creative or spectator mode, you'll have to deal with hunger in Minecraft. Hunger is implemented by a separate bar next to your health, which looks like a collection of (presumably) chicken legs. Depending on how high or low this bar is, you will receive various positive and negative status effects. Managing this is a big part of the survival experience, which is why we're going to teach you all about it right here.

How Hunger Works in Minecraft

Hunger is a mechanic in Minecraft that exists in survival mode and grants you status buffs or debuffs depending on how much it's decreased.

  • You you can check your hunger bar at any time by looking at chicken legs Hunger.svg
  • When you are as hungry as possible, you should see 10 chicken legs. In total there are 20 divisions, each of which is presented in the form of a half of the lower leg.
  • If your hunger bar is full, you will get the maximum benefit. This includes natural healing, the ability to run, and you won't take hunger damage.

When the bar is empty, you will begin to receive negative status effects. These include losing the natural healing ability at 17 points, losing the ability to run at six points, and taking hunger damage when it hits zero. At this point, you're probably guessing that you need to ensure that your hungry bar is replenished at all times - especially if you're planning on getting into danger. But to keep it replenished, you need to know what reduces and restores it. It's very simple. Performing almost any action in Minecraft reduces your hunger, while eating restores it.

How saturation works in Minecraft

Along with hunger there is a separate bar known as "satiation". This bar is not visible, and controls the rate at which your hunger bar decreases.

  • You get satiated by eating certain foods that reward you with satiation points.
  • Saturation will be depleted before your hunger bar starts to regress, and you will know that your saturation is empty if your hunger bar starts to decrease.
  • It's important note that your saturation level cannot exceed your current hunger level. So, for example, if your hunger bar is currently at 10, your maximum saturation cannot exceed 10.
  • each eating in Minecraft restores a certain amount of hunger points, but overeating doesn't just apply those excess hunger points to satiety.
Instead, you need to eat food that restores more hunger points. We'll cover this in more detail in our list of recipes below.

How exhaustion works in Minecraft

minecraft-img

Exhaustionis a statistic in Minecraft that measures how much food or satiety you lose when performing a certain action. Many activities in Minecraft provide you with exhaustion, from swimming to jumping or getting food poisoning. It's a little tricky, but basically you'll lose a hunger or satiety point whenever you perform enough activities to reach exhaustion level four. When this happens, you will lose a hunger point (half calf) or saturation point and your exhaustion level will reset.

Here is a list of all activities in Minecraft that result in exhaustion and how much exhaustion they cause:

  • Breaking blocks: 0.005 attrition per block.
  • Bounce: 0.05 exhaustion per jump.
  • Swimming: 0.01 exhaustion per meter.
  • Attack: 0.1 exhaustion per attack hit.
  • Taking Damage: 0.1 exhaustion per attack received.
  • Jumping While Running: 0.2 per jump.
  • Food poisoning from raw chicken or rotten flesh
    :
0.1 per second for 30 seconds.
  • Food poisoning from puffer fish: 0,3 per second for 15 seconds.

The best food in Minecraft

The best food in Minecraft generally depends on the current state of your hunger bar. If it's low, you'll want the food that restores the most hunger points. However, it's probably the best idea to make sure your hunger bar never decreases in the first place, and that's where we return to satiety. In addition to restoring a certain amount of hunger points, food restores a certain amount of saturation.

Given that your satiety cannot exceed your current hunger level, it makes sense to maintain your satiety as often as possible. There are several different ways to do this, and this probably deserves its own guide, but we recommend waiting until your hunger bar starts to shake, signaling that your saturation level is low, and then eating food that restores a high amount of saturation. Keep up the good work and you'll never have to worry about hunger again - as long as you have enough to eat.
