If you're burning rubber and racing through the streets of Palm City, having a handy set of Need For Speed Heat tips in your glove compartment can help you take first place in races and keep your tail to the wind when dealing with the police. The game has implemented a lot of changes made to the gameplay, so get ready to explore the city with crazy jumps and smash many billboards in addition to the usual races - whether it's sanctioned circuits during the day or illegal street racing at night. Practice your drift
If you're used to hitting the brakes to get your car into a controlled drift, it may take you a while to master your drifting in Need For Speed Heat, as the method is slightly different. Get into a corner and then press and hold the accelerator and you'll start drifting, which is a great way to get through a corner while maintaining speed. It looks cool, although remember that if you can cut the steering angle at full speed without drifting, then it will be most effective. For tighter turns, especially in some drifting races and trials, the handbrake must be applied to get enough slip to turn through tight spaces.
Don't worry about obstacles
Many racing games will penalize you for clipping or full blown collisions with obstacles, but in Palm City, lampposts, telegraph poles, and palm trees all break like branches if you hit them. It won't do any damage to your car and will only slow your speed down a bit, so while you're passing through checkpoints, don't worry about sharp turns while racing. Only harder objects like iconic portals and bridge piers will stop you on your way and they will reduce your car's health so be careful with them.
Unlock fast travel points
The world of Palm City is quite large, and while there are some fast travel points at the beginning of the game, such as your garage and dealership, there are many other safe houses on the map marked with a lock until you visit them. Take some time to drive around town to unlock those safe houses, as you'll save a lot more time in the long run by being able to fast travel around Palm City to reach other tracks and stories.
Don't Ignore Collectibles
As you explore a city, you automatically add markers to your map for billboards, street art, and flamingos as you pass them, but they don't have to be interesting only for finishers. Street art just gives you new decals for your cars when you collect them, but every billboard and flamingo you smash rewards you with bank and rep, which means it's definitely worth your while to take down anyone you discover even if you don't plan to complete the collection. Below the progression in the pause menu, you can track your collections to see how you're progressing, as well as see hints for where billboards and street art are located.
Choose your racing challenges
In addition to daily tasks to work towards bank and representative rewards, you can also have an active set of rider tasks to complete. It's unusual that you have to choose between day or night racers as you can only have one active set at a time and can only select or switch them in your garage. Each time you complete an action with at least one star, such as speed traps, long jumps, and drift zones, you will receive a bank or representative bonus depending on the time of day you are in. You can use this at night to earn extra reputation quickly by selecting Speed Traps и long jumps, during their playthrough, so make sure you take full advantage of it. There's a particularly useful place to do this inside the race track just south of your garage, where you can constantly zigzag between the speed trap and the long jump to build up reputation without having to worry about the cops. Once you've built up a reputation, you can simply hop into your garage to top up the bank or hunt down the police to further fuel your ardor and increase the multiplier for even more rewards.
Plan your escape route
When taking part in events at night, take the time to check your map first for a rough idea of where nearby garages and safe houses are, once you're in the heat of a police chase, you don't really have time to start looking at the map. Pay attention to the markers in the sky above the safe houses to help you navigate to them, although remember that due to road layouts you will not be able to drive directly to them.
Know when to stop
When you run into the police while driving at night, you increase your multiplier for all money earned during that night, as long as you keep it by reaching the safe house. The higher your Heat, the tougher the police response will be, so you need to weigh how long you stay away from getting caught and losing your entire multiplier as well as some pot. You can visit gas stations to have your car repaired if you've been beaten up by the cops, but you can only do this three times a night before they close. Drop the cops and then make it to the safe house to collect your rep - you don't need to unlock the safe house before you can use it to complete the night run.
Escape from the cops
You will need to set a distance between yourself and the cops in order to break their line of sight and start your escape. The police are fast and aggressive so you will struggle to dodge them on a straight run and instead you have to do a lot of turns and double spins to try and get them off you. Once you reach the "flight" phase, keep an eye on your minimap for the cops and their cones of vision and then either move out of the area or hide out of sight until the chase is over. A great way to lose the police on your tail is to use one of the many trampolines around the city, as they usually cut you off to another section of the road and the cops won't jump, immediately putting distance between you and your pursuers.
Invest in supporting upgrades ASAP
As you increase your reputation, you will unlock access to new parts that can be used in your garage to improve your car. In addition to the usual engine, chassis, and transmission modifications, your vehicle has both active and passive accessory upgrade slots. Keep an eye on them and invest in upgrades as soon as you can, as they offer all sorts of benefits for fighting off the abilities of the cops, replenishing your nitrous, or partially repairing your vehicle, which can be invaluable when the police have rammed your vehicle to critical damage.
