The Ax weapon in New World has two skill trees: Berserking and Throwing. The first one will probably be your priority due to the offensive buffs. The latter, meanwhile, gives you some flexibility when you're trying to fight from a distance.

Berserk

• Berserk - Gives you a 20% attack bonus that lasts for 12 seconds. There is an 18 second cooldown that will start when it expires. The ability itself is compatible with Carnelian's taunt gem if it's installed in your weapon, so you can force mobs to focus on you when you activate it.
• Feral Rush - Run forward a short distance and make two attacks. The former deals 115% weapon damage and the latter deals 130% weapon damage.
• Raging Stream - You will land four quick strikes that deal 90% weapon damage.

Recommended Active Abilities: you will definitely need Berserk as it is one of the most powerful abilities in the game. The 20% attack boost is no joke, making you more formidable no matter the situation. Try also to select all perks in the column. Similarly, Feral Rush is another great skill. This is your way of closing the distance between you and the target. What's more, it's slightly better than the Leaping Strike ability from the Sword and Shield build. You can make two quick attacks and the jump action will have a shorter distance meaning you are less likely to miss. As for Raging Torrent, it's not bad because of the ability to deal burst damage. However, you can get another perk from the throwing skill tree.

Recommended Passive Abilities: the two passives from the fourth column (Caused Strength and Unrelenting Fury) are really good. You will get the Empower buff which will further increase your DPS.

Throwing

• Rending Throw - Throw an ax to deal 110% weapon damage and apply the Rend status effect to the target. This reduces their damage absorption by 10% for 10 seconds.
