Valve's New 'Index' VR Headset Coming in May
Valve has finally begun to lift the lid on its long-awaited VR headset, the Valve Index.
The new teaser page on Steam contains a picture of the headset and the phrase "Improve your experience" along with a date of "May 2019".
It's unclear if that date will include a full disclosure or release of the headset. Several notable aspects are visible in the headset image, including cameras or sensors on the top, a button on the front left, and a slider with a measurement scale on the right. Their actions are unknown, although they can be used to set up and calibrate the headset.
Valve has been hiring staff to work on VR for some time now, and Index explains what it was for.
We've also heard that the new headset will have a wider field of view with a resolution similar to that of the HTC Vive Pro.
Valve told us last week at GDC that it has VR updates to share "soon." GDC also showedthat Oculus announced their Rift S headset, which replaces the original Rift. It uses a new inside-out tracking system, while Index is expected to provide the next generation of tracking from outside Valve via SteamVR.
