Sony's New PS5 Update Includes Unexpected HDR Improvements and 120Hz Support

The update also allows you to store PS5 games on USB sticks.

Sony's new PS5 software update is out now and includes some unexpected improvements to HDR and 120Hz support. While Sony has already detailed a big new feature that allows gamers to store PS5 games on external hard drive , there's also a new option to automatically switch video output to non-HDR when you're using a game or app that doesn't support HDR.

This is a key improvement for those using HDR on PS5 as it now means you no longer need to dig into the settings menu to manually disable HDR when watching SDR content.

Along with these HDR changes, this update also adds two new HDMI controls to the system side of the PS5's settings menu. You can now turn on one-touch playback, which will automatically turn on your connected TV when you turn on your PS5 and switch it to the correct input. You can also toggle the power off link, which allows the PS5 to go into rest mode if you turn off the TV connected to the console.

Sony is also supporting more 120Hz PC monitors with this update. If you have a 1080p PC monitor that supports 120Hz, it should now run at that refresh rate with the PS5. Unfortunately, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support is still missing on the PS5.

This latest software update also includes improved options for quickly disabling in-game chat, the ability to search for purchased games, and the ability to hide games in the library.
