New Generation of Graphics Cards May Raise PSU Concerns
The premiere of the new Nvidia and AMD graphics cards is yet to come, but there are rumors on the net about the power consumption of the next generation of GPUs, and here we have no good news.
According to VideoCardz sources, the new generation graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD will need at least 450 watts, and in some cases more than 500 watts. All thanks to a huge performance jump, which should be comparable to what we saw when moving from a Maxwell GPU to Pascal. Reports on the RTX 4000, built on the AD102 platform, suggest that these chipsets will be able to accommodate 71% more CUDA cores than the 3000 series, increasing their number from 10752 to 18. This is expected to more than double the performance compared to that , which offers the GeForce RTX 432, consuming about 3090 watts.
AMD's latest graphics chips will find themselves in a similar situation, which, like the RTX 4000, will use TSMC's 5nm process. However, compared to Navi 21, we will have a larger map size due to the multi-chip design. This will result in a size of around 600-650mm2, which is about 10% larger compared to Navi 21. According to reports, the power consumption of new AMD graphics systems should not exceed 500W, 450-480W range. However, it will still be of considerable value, and we must admit that information about the new GPUs of both giants does not inspire optimism.
This appears to be a side effect of the ongoing pursuit of more and more graphics cards. What does this mean for the market? Power supply manufacturers will certainly be pleased with the growing interest in more powerful units. After all, if users want to replace the GPU in their computers, buying a power supply capable of delivering the energy needed to keep all components running properly is indispensable.
