Nvidia Hopper - Next Generation GPUs Revealed

Nvidia has patented a new line of GPUs called the Hopper. We may have just learned of a successor to the Ampere series that has yet to have its official launch.

The latest Nvidia Ampere GPUs are due for release in June 2020. Although Turing's successor has yet to be launched, Nvidia is not sitting idly by and has just patented something called Hopper in the US Patent and Trademark Office. Rumors about the next generation of graphics cards have been circulating on the internet for some time now, and the patent registration may suggest that these leaks are true. The name comes from the famous American IT pioneer Grace Hopper, who co-invented the first programming languages such as COBOL and took part in programming the Harvard Mark I machine that played a major role during World War II (interesting fact - it was she who introduced the word bug in IT language).

According to rumors posted by Kopite7Kimi on the German forum 3DCenter, the new GPU series will introduce an MCM-type graphics chipset that has been mostly used in CPUs so far. If these hunches are correct, Nvidia has a great opportunity to use the Multi-Chip Module to create powerful GPUs and scale down individual GPU modules.

There's a good chance that many of the rumors will turn out to be true, because even before the patent was released, we heard about leaks in the introduction of MCM and Hopper's name. The price and actual release date of the mysterious GPU will likely remain a mystery for a long time to come, but today we may have our first glimpse of Turing and Ampère's theoretical successor. Nvidia has not made any official comment on the leak. The patent filed by Nvidia also included the name Aerial, but we don't yet know what that code name might mean.
