League of Legends update 10.17: Description, Release date and time, etc.?
Riot Games has confirmed that the League of Legends 10.17 update will be released on schedule, and we have all of the early patch notes, champion balance changes, and more for players to dig into ahead of the August 19th update.
This time around, it's a "slightly smaller patch," in part due to Riot's annual summer vacation that the League's devs take each year before the World Cup crisis. Here are all the details on League of Legends' balance-focused update 10.17.
When will update 10.17 for League of Legends be released?
The next League of Legends update is expected on Wednesday, August 19th. It will launch in Oceania at 8:00 AM EST (15:00 PM on Tuesday) and release in all regions at 8:00 AM from there.
Players can expect several hours of downtime. Matchmaking and access to LoL servers will be disabled approximately three hours before the patch rolls out. This will be around 5am PT on August 19th for US players and 5am GMT for European players.
Caitlyn and Hecarim buffs from update 10.16 have been canceled
The two main changes coming in League Update 10.17 will be for Caitlyn and Hecarim, who have only recently received a buff. This time they are knocked down again due to Riot "making a little mistake" with their numbers.
“When we miss a buff in a patch, we always think about partially restoring that buff first, like Keith and Hecarim did in this patch,” explained Mark Yetter in Twitter . "Sometimes we apply a different nerf because we think the buffs are worth keeping."
Caitlyn's movement speed will be reduced in an upcoming Wednesday update. Hecarim's movement speed is also reduced, although his speed is increased by distributing a Destructive Dash (E) when activated.

When we sometimes go with a different nerf it's because we think the buffs are worth keeping and we want to shift a champions gameplay in that direction
Bot lane duo Lux and Sona are nerfed
Sona has slipped into the meta, rescheduling the last few patches again. Together with Lux in the bottom lane two magicians formed a formidable duet . However, in update 10.17, Riot are reducing their power, individually and collectively.
“Going into the patch, we thought Sona and Lux were only OP as a combo,” Yetter admitted. “Digging into the data, it turned out that they both became OP as single picks with optimized builds in the current meta, so we went with separate nerfs instead of their interaction”
Sona is being stripped of some of her offensive power from her Q and E, while Lux's shield now blocks less damage.
These small changes should be aimed at reducing both Sona's carry potential (preventing Sona's other carry lines from spawning) and increasing the power of Lux's trick along with traditional carries, as well as easing the oppressive combo.
Qiyana may miss World Championship after nerfs
The last of the big changes is aimed at Keanu. The attack damage midlaner boasts one of the highest win rates in the league at high Diamond ranks. She is so strong that she “crossed the threshold of nerfs,” Yetter said.
"It's unfortunate because I'd love to see her at the Worlds, but I think she might miss out on this tournament," the League developer continued. "We must adhere to our principles to ensure that each level of the game remains as balanced as possible."
Qiyana's nerfs will mainly focus on her courage (E) and Terrashape (W). Her W will now have a 10% on-hit attack ratio, reduced from 20%, and her E base damage has been slightly reduced from 60-200 to 60-180.
In addition to the header changes, 10.17 is expected to see improvements to Aatrox, Gragas, Kai'Sa, Varus, and Shaya. Conversely, Evelynn and the recently released champion Yone will get a few changes in another update this week.
Here are the full patch notes for league 10.17. These August 19 patch notes will be updated when Riot releases them, as the OCE servers begin patching at 11:00 AM PT.
