Wastelanders Update Adds New Food to Fallout 76 Cannibal Menu

Fallout

Scrolling through the subreddit Fallout 76 Last night, I stumbled upon a post that was a bit different from the rest of the excited fans looking forward to meeting their first scavenger NPCs in the new update.

"The best thing about Wastelanders" is a steady supply of non-rotten food. This post is made by Cannibal Gang. »

This user is not alone either. Their post was greeted with "cannibal ganggggg" chants typed under it by various users. Intrigued and a little scared, I decided to jump straight down that rabbit hole to find out more. That's how I ended up in a Facebook group chat with at least eight cannibals.

Not real cannibals (I hope)! They are part of the Appalachian Institution flavors (or EATT , for short), an RPG community that takes its Fallout 76 cannibal lifestyle very seriously. And some of them told me how surprised they were that the new NPCs really don't mind if you eat someone right in front of them.

“I was surprised when I was able to eat the NPC and waited for the NPC's reaction and nothing happened from their side. In older games, you would get reactions to your flesh palette,” one participant said.

“I killed and ate the guy who robbed Wayward in front of the Duchess with no real response from the NPCs,” added another. "But I'm still having a lot of fun with Wastelanders, I'm fine with those details that aren't quite clear yet."

The founder of EATT, Chris Graul, does not believe that this is some kind of mistake or overlooked detail on the part of Bethesda. Rather, he believes it is a sign that their growing society of cannibals is becoming more popular in the world of Fallout.

"Our goal is to remove the stigma surrounding the ancient ritual of cannibalism, and it looks like we've made an impact if the NPCs don't mind if you dine on them," he told me.

Before the Wastelanders update, there was already enough food for this party. With the cannibalism perk you can cook food from enemies like super mutants and scorched ones, there is now a bit more variety on the menu.

“Now finding food is much easier,” says Graul. “I noticed that my camp now has a ‘human garden’ outside of the cultists. Pleasantly surprised. I'm just glad EATT HQ now has free food delivery.”

Light feasting is not the preferred lifestyle for most cannibals, as many of the people I interacted with preferred to hunt player characters.

“Personally, I don't enjoy eating NPCs. The ultimate thrill is using the Run button on downed players,” I was told. "I call my PvP days 'hunting' and try to execute a downed player at every opportunity, but often leave the Camp looking for non-player enemies to eliminate for roleplay."

Consuming NPCs, EATT leaves me with one last agonizing thought.

“The return of the NPCs themselves will encourage new players to either eat or recruit… or both. So whatever you say, there will be a lot more meat in the Appalachians.”
