Dead Island 2 Review: California-Style End of the World

Dead Island 2 offers you a unique opportunity to become the protagonist of the zombie apocalypse in Los Angeles. This game might be the perfect choice for those who are looking for a summer home in the zombie world.

However, if you are not a fan of the genre, you may run into some problems. Visually, the DI2 doesn't look very polished, and that might leave you a bit frustrated. But despite this, I spent over 15 hours playing the game, and it still does not let me go. I just love zombie games, so my opinion might be a bit biased.

Despite its shortcomings, there are many things about DI2 that I like. This is a fun and unusual action game, where you will find a lot of comedic violence. Los Angeles after the outbreak of the zombie plague has turned into a real rage room, and only you can stop this nightmare. If you're looking for a co-op action game where you have to fight evil in a splatterpunk style, then DI2 is exactly what you need.

The plot of DI2 takes place in an unusual version of Los Angeles that has been hit by an unknown plague of zombies. The US military is trying to stop this nightmare, but they are prevented not only by a horde of zombies, but also by a strong earthquake that destroys the city. Start your journey through the world of the zombie apocalypse and save Los Angeles from the threat hanging over it.

You enter the game as one of the six survivors who managed to make it to the last flight from Los Angeles, which could not escape a terrible fate and crashed shortly after takeoff. However, you have undergone an unusual change: you managed to survive a zombie bite, which was impossible for most other survivors in the city. A new life has changed your destiny forever. Now you have to travel to "Ad-A", a newly baptized area created to communicate with the surviving authorities and use your immunity to evacuate the city free of charge.

For me, DI2 was a real discovery: I felt that Dambuster Studios had created Dead Rising by mistake. From the very beginning, DI2 makes you laugh, while the original Dead Island was so dark and serious. If DI was like 28 days later, then DI2 could be called a remake of Shaun of the Dead set in Southern California.

In Los Angeles, after the DI2 outbreak, other survivors have become even more eccentric, from actors who stubbornly refuse to leave their roles, to struggling indie directors using zombies as extras, to YouTube millionaires who can't decide what's more important to them - survival. or content creation.

According to DI2's creative director, James Warnall, the main goal of the game was to create a light and fun atmosphere, so the big moments of horror fail. This concept is generally successful, but only twice in the game Dead Island 2 really tense moments are created.

The rest of the time, Dead Island 2 is a surprisingly colorful and gory game, with most of the characters being too eccentric to be taken seriously. There are exceptions, like Emma Jont, your unintentional mistress, but every time DI2 tries to be realistic, it's annoying, not impressive.

This dramatic change in tone is a key difference between DI2 and the original Dead Island, but many of DI2's game systems are taken from its predecessor. For example, punches and weapon modifications remain core elements of the game. At the beginning of the game, you will have to fight in Los Angeles with anything that can serve as a weapon. But as you progress through the levels, you will find more effective weapons such as night sticks, sledgehammers, swords and axes, as well as tools and blueprints to turn each one into a unique steampunk weapon. About halfway through the game, DI2 also brings back the Fury mechanic, allowing you to enter a state of unstoppable violence for a short time and take down zombies with your bare hands.

DI2 introduces a new card system that replaces the skill tree from the previous game. Now you can improve your character by gradually adding new abilities and passive buffs. You can acquire new attacks, such as a powerful palm strike, as well as a defensive skill that allows you to block and dodge attacks. You must time your dodges to deliver a devastating zombie counter.

Zombies now warp, break, and fly apart on impact, making them more realistic. One way to reduce the threat from zombies is to dismember their bodies. To do this, you will need to use crushers, which can turn off your light. However, if you break both of the zombie's arms first, they won't be able to use their attacks.

However, the main protagonist in DI2 is the city of Los Angeles itself. Every corner of the city is teeming with danger, from broken gas lines and street wires to spilled fuel. All this can be used for your own purposes and quickly destroy the zombies. For example, if you spot a large group of zombies huddled in a pit, just throw a car battery on their head - it will be very effective.

Each fight in DI2 is different from the previous one, as the environment plays an important role. I found it hard not to enjoy it when zombies accidentally exploded or when my shot in the wrong place caused an electric arc that covered the entire intersection. If you just kill zombies using normal methods, then the game will quickly get boring. DI2 needs chaos and a little mess.

However, I must say that DI2 looks its best when playing co-op. I started playing alone and had a little fun, but when I started playing with another player, the game became much more interesting. During several test sessions on the pre-release version, I found that the network code worked without problems, and I was even able to play for several hours between Seattle and Guadalajara. If you're going to play DI2, it's best to do it with your friends.

It doesn't matter if you're single or not - in the game DI2 you will face the same problems as in the original. When you draw a weapon, it often hits walls, and zombies are not limited by the number of bullets you can use, because ammo is everywhere.

As soon as I had a cool rifle, I went from being a survivor in Beverly Hills to a real bully on the streets of Ocean Avenue. If I couldn't kill the zombies with a few shots, I activated the rage mode and destroyed them to the last drop of blood. My melee weapon, which used to be just an extra, became my main weapon, and most of my skill cards no longer mattered.

On the one hand, this fits the story that DI2 tells. You are not an ordinary survivor trying to survive in a ruined world; you are a superhero who is capable of unique feats and sees the funny side of the zombie apocalypse. You are the most dangerous thing in this hellish world.

On the other hand, DI2 lacks the fuel to become a full-fledged first-person shooter. All she has to offer is more and more zombie waves that overtake you for 10-15 hours. Even I, a huge zombie fan, can't recommend DI2 without hesitation because of how quickly the game loses its original zest.

Summary of Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2 is a zombie apocalypse game where you have to survive and fight hordes of zombies. It is designed to be played cooperatively with friends and is the best way to enjoy the game. The game creates a wonderful atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in a zombie apocalypse playground.

The best thing about Dead Island 2 is the engaging combat that feels very natural and visceral. But the game also has its downsides. For example, after getting a gun, the game becomes too easy, which can spoil the fun of the game. Also, halfway through the game starts to repeat itself and the jokes stop being funny. Some of them will still work, but they will not last throughout the game.

Overall, Dead Island 2 is a good game for those who like zombie horror and co-op games. It can offer you some fun nights out with friends where you can throw zombies at power lines and enjoy an exciting fight. However, if you're playing alone, it's best to approach the game with caution because it can be too repetitive and shallow.

Dead Island 2 - continuation of the zombie action Dead Island. This time you find yourself in Los Angeles, where the quarantine was introduced, and the army was forced to retreat. Now the future of the entire city depends only on you and a few other people who are resistant to the zombie virus. Choose one of six playable characters, take up arms and start destroying countless hordes of enemies. Slash, shred, burn, shoot - become the most effective zombie exterminator.
