Review of Resident Evil Re:Verse - the atmosphere of the series is completely incompatible with PVP battles

Resident Evil Re:Verse is another Capcom multiplayer shooter set in the Resident Evil universe - but how does it compare to previous attempts to break into the genre?

Capcom is determined to play and enjoy a competitive multiplayer shooter set in the Resident Evil universe despite previous efforts having failed. However, Capcom continues to smack this dead tyrant, and Resident Evil Re:Verse is the latest offering available for free to those who own Resident evil village.

The game follows in the footsteps of games such as Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City and Umbrella Corp which emphasized multiplayer shooting rather than single player survival horror. Both of these games were criticized, but that obviously wasn't enough to keep Capcom from going out yet again with Re:Verse.

Resident Evil Village Re:Poems Key Details

  • Price: Free for those who own Resident Evil Village
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Release date: October 28, 2022
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC

Resident Evil in name only

Re:Verse was supposed to come out with Resident Evil Village, but was put aside for polishing. The game then faded from view, but has now entered its beta phase, ditching the cell shading art style for a more photoreal look.

This should please fans of the Resident Evil series, and it's nice to see different characters from different eras of the franchise thrown into the same arena. Here you'll be able to play as RE7's Jack Baker as he plunges his clippers into characters he's never met in the series. Want to see who wins in a tyrant stalker battle between RE3's Nemesis and RE2's Mister X? Well, now you can.

You will start playing as one of the many RE heroes, Leon, Claire, Chris, Jill, etc., but once you are killed, you will reincarnate into one of the game's various monsters. You will then start your second life and be able to attack other players in this new form with different skills.

At first, you will turn into a molded zombie from RE7, but as you progress, you can start to control more powerful monsters, as well as some of the iconic bosses mentioned above. Once you die in this form, you will return to the human and the process will repeat again.

It's an interesting concept, but the problem is that it soon gets tedious and these battles end too quickly to enjoy. It also often feels like you'll deal massive amounts of damage to other players without knocking them down, while they'll seemingly kill you with a couple of hits.

Admittedly, this may just be a matter of skill or understanding of the game mechanics, but those unfamiliar with multiplayer third-person shooters will soon lose their patience with Re: Verse. And even if you avoid that trap, the game soon stops feeling like it has anything to do with Resident Evil and just starts to feel like every other third-person shooter you've ever played.

Not the holiday Resident Evil deserves

Aside from a nice cast of characters to tickle our nostalgia, how is a competitive online shooter a celebration of all things Resident Evil? A franchise that has made a name for itself and is at its absolute best when it embraces survival horror. Exploding monsters with big guns has always been a part of Resident Evil, but not other players.

Resident Evil's forays into pointless action usually end in failure - looking at you RE6. However, when the franchise takes a balanced approach between scaring us and having a lot of shooting, it often sees its biggest successes like RE4 and RE: Village. Re:Verse doesn't seem to realize this, and we're struggling to understand Capcom's determination to reach out to an audience we don't think exists.

This doesn't mean multi-user RE can't work, it can. Previous versions of The Mercenaries offered online functionality that worked pretty well. So it's a shame the village version of this minigame didn't offer that instead of Re:Verse. Then let's not forget the legendary games RE Outbreak, which were well ahead of their time when it came to multiplayer carnage.

Re:Verse isn't good enough to compete with the likes of Overwatch 2 or Modern Warfare 2 in the competitive shooter space. RE fans looking for nostalgia would be better off playing one of the various RE remakes.

Verdict 5/10

If you love competitive multiplayer shooters and have always wanted a technically sound game in this genre based on the Resident Evil universe, then Re:Verse is just that. It may be fun to distract fans of the franchise, but it doesn't really do much to live up to the legacy of the series.

Don't get us wrong, the game is by leaps and bounds ahead of previous offerings such as Umbrella Chronicles or Operation Racoon City We just don't see the point in it. We're also not sure if Re:Verse will be remembered alongside these titles when Capcom inevitably releases its next multiplayer offering.
