XCOM: Chimera Squad Review - What to Expect from the Game

XCOM

XCOM: Chimera Squad appeared out of the blue - like a flying saucer that crashed on a radio tower; we did not even have time to come to our senses, as the game has already appeared on Steam.

Series fans XCOM had to wait almost four years until the next release was announced. And when it finally arrived, it turned out to be quite different from what we might have expected. Instead of traditional battles with angry flying saucer crews or guerrilla warfare on alien-controlled planets, we control... a special forces team consisting of space cobras . This is bad? Well, not quite. XCOM: Chimera Squad offers many attractive solutions and ideas. At the same time, however, it may disappoint the most ardent fans of the franchise. .

XCOM

To begin with, I will tell you that I was bought by the idea of a new XCOM . Yes, it's noticeably simpler than previous releases, and the comic book style might not appeal to everyone. On top of that, there were weird audio issues (characters go silent in cutscenes), and the game sometimes has an overall low-budget production vibe.

In this case, however, the game was rated accordingly − on steam , base price is $20 , but you can't get it at half price until May 1st . And for a game for ten dollars Chimera Squad looks decent.

Old, new XCOM

More importantly, basic mechanics Chimera Squad really well balanced - similar to what we have seen before, at the same time changed enough to freshen up the approach . People are known to crave what they know. At the same time, we usually expect our beloved series to develop in some way. For developers, this can be like dancing on a razor blade while blindfolded (which can be as difficult as it sounds, see Relic Entertainment and their Dawn of War 3 ), but the developers at Firaxis seem to be coming out on top.

Like almost every XCOM , the game consists of two intertwined layers - strategic and tactical . We have a command center that offers a choice of missions on a city map, we have investigations that force us to complete certain tasks, we also have to make sure that the entire metropolis does not fall into turmoil; In addition, we also have to develop technologies, buy equipment and manage the progress and skills of our characters.

We can also send the character to trainings, where his statistics will improve, injuries will be treated or special missions to collect information and additional resources. The second part of the game is the actual missions, which are usually divided into several consecutive battles performed in a turn-based combat system.

This is where we get the most news. Each encounter now starts with a Break Mode, during which we stack our team members in certain entrances and decide what their initial moves will be, greatly influencing the way the encounter plays out.

This allows us to control battles with proper planning, but also makes it difficult to coordinate the entire squad (there is a special system that allows you to speed up the turn of a given character once per mission).

This particular mechanic seems to make a new XCOM much easier than all the previous parts . At the same time, while perfectly performing the action, watching our team take out several enemies before they even get into defensive positions can be a lot of fun.

Another bad news is that our characters are not randomly generated, but rather figures created in the game world that must survive each mission. They have their own personalities, races, traits and skills. Over time, the choice becomes quite rich, so everyone must find their optimal composition, modifying it in accordance with the needs of a particular mission. However, some people are likely to feel that the game was missing something important, an integral part of any struggle - losing.

Is it worth it?

В this game is definitely worth playing . I can't guarantee that it will XCOM just for you, and it certainly won't be a full XCOM experience comparable to the expansive XCOM 2. However, there's still a lot of fun inside.
